    Linkages between Defense Spending and Income Inequality in Iran

    This paper contributes in economic literature by investigating the impact of defense spending on income inequality in case of Iran using time series data over the period of 1971-2011. For this purpose, we have applied the ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration for long run relationship in the presence of structural breaks arising in the series. The stationarity properties of the variables are tested using structural break unit root tests. The causal relationship between defense spending and income inequality is examined by employing the VECM Granger causality approach. Our findings validate the long run relationship between the series. The results indicate that defense spending improves income distribution in Iran. An inverted-U shaped relationship exists between defense spending and income inequality while economic growth reduces income inequality. The causality analysis reveals that defense spending Granger causes income inequality and feedback effect exists between income inequality and economic growth

    The Changing Landscape for Stroke\ua0Prevention in AF: Findings From the GLORIA-AF Registry Phase 2

    Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non\u2013vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase 1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients\u2019 baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age  6575 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score  652; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N = 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in Asia and North America.     Hydrostatic pressure induced transition from δtC to δℓ pinning mechanism in MgB2

    The impact of hydrostatic pressure up to 1.2 GPa on the critical current density (Jc) and the nature of the pinning mechanism in MgB2 have been investigated within the framework of the collective theory. We found that the hydrostatic pressure can induce a transition from the regime where pinning is controlled by spatial variation in the critical transition temperature (δTc ) to the regime controlled by spatial variation in the mean free path (δℓ). Furthermore, critical temperature (Tc) and low field Jc are slightly reduced, although the Jc drops more quickly at high fields than at ambient pressure. We found that the pressure raises the anisotropy and reduces the coherence length, resulting in weak interaction of the vortex cores with the pinning centres. Moreover, the hydrostatic pressure can reduce the density of states [Ns(E)], which, in turn, leads to a reduction in the Tc from 39.7 K at P = 0 GPa to 37.7 K at P = 1.2 GPa

    Giant enhancement in critical current density, up to a hundredfold, in superconducting NaFe0.97Co0.03 As single crystals under hydrostatic pressure

    Tremendous efforts towards improvement in the critical current density Jc of iron based superconductors (FeSCs), especially at relatively low temperatures and magnetic fields, have been made so far through different methods, resulting in real progress. Jc at high temperatures in high fields still needs to be further improved, however, in order to meet the requirements of practical applications. Here, we demonstrate a simple approach to achieve this. Hydrostatic pressure can significantly enhance Jc in NaFe0.97Co0.03As single crystals by at least tenfold at low field and more than a hundredfold at high fields. Significant enhancement in the in-field performance of NaFe0.97Co0.03As single crystal in terms of pinning force density (Fp) is found at high pressures. At high fields, the Fp is over 20 and 80 times higher than under ambient pressure at12 K and 14 K, respectively, at P = 1GPa. We believe that the Co-doped NaFeAs compounds are very exciting and deserve to be more intensively investigated. Finally, it is worthwhile to say that by using hydrostatic pressure, we can achieve more milestones in terms of high Jc values in tapes, wires or films of other Fe-based superconductors

    LocJam: A novel jamming-based approach to secure localization in wireless networks

Existing anchor or base station-based positioning systems work well in non-hostile scenarios, but their accuracy suffers in the presence of cheating anchors. Securing location discovery in these positioning systems is an important, and still open, research problem. Earlier research efforts in this direction have mainly focused on either efficient detection and elimination of cheating anchors or on localization in the presence of cheating anchors. Proposals on localization in the presence of cheating anchors fail to perform well in the presence of a large number of cheating anchors, whereas, the issue of elimination of cheating anchors (once detected) has not been clearly addressed in techniques that focus on detection and elimination of cheating anchors. In this paper, we present a novel and deterministic strategy for securing anchor-based location discovery. Our technique employs a novel CDMA-based jamming strategy to eliminate (the effect of) cheating anchors during localization. We validate the performance of our proposal under various adversarial strengths and operating scenarios by means of extensive simulations

Most existing security mechanisms utilize cryptographic techniques that are computationally expensive and bandwidth intensive. However, aggregating the large outputs of these cryptographic algorithms has not been considered thoroughly. Smart Grid Networks (SGN) generally have limitations on bandwidth, network capacity and energy. Hence, utilizing data aggregation algorithms, the limited bandwidth can be efficiently utilized. Most of the aggregation algorithms use statistical functions such as minimum, maximum, and average. before transmitting data over the network. Existing aggregation algorithms, in SGNs, are generally expensive in terms of communication overhead, processing load and delay. However, our proposed CDMA-based data aggregation method provides access to all the data of all the smart meters in the root node, which in this case is the Utility Center, while keeping the smart metering data secure. The efficiency of the proposed method is confirmed by mathematical analysis
