    The Effect of Terminology Relating to mTBI on Symptom and Recovery Expectations

    The terms mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion may evoke different expectations for people who sustain such an injury. Expectations are important because previous researchers have demonstrated that expected symptoms at the time of injury were the best predictors of actual symptoms post-injury. The current study investigated the effect of terminology on various outcome expectations. Participants also reported their familiarity with the terminology. Participants read a vignette depicting a person sustaining an mTBI in a motor vehicle accident. A relevant diagnosis – concussion or mTBI – was relayed at the end of the vignette. No diagnosis was relayed for the control group. The results demonstrated that there was an effect of terminology on expected symptoms, F(2, 129) = 3.17, p = .045. Post-hoc analyses revealed that “concussion,” relative to no diagnosis, was associated with greater expected symptoms. There was no effect of terminology on expected length of recovery timeline, self-efficacy to control the symptoms and recovery of the injury, consequences of the injury, negative changes in life perspective, or undesirability of the injury. There was an effect of terminology on expected positive changes in life perspective, H(2) = 6.38, p = .04. Post-hoc analyses revealed that “mTBI,” relative to no diagnosis, was associated with greater positive changes in life perspective. Participants were more familiar with “concussion” relative to “mTBI,” but greater familiarity had no effect on expectations. Findings from this study reveal that there is a substantial lack of clarity surrounding brain injuries, and terminology evokes quite varied expectations on different people

    A Significant Threat to Neuropsychological Test Validity

    Objective: Neuropsychological test security is vital to the validity of assessment. Previous research in our lab has shown that 71% of participants use the Internet to prepare for neuropsychological evaluations (Kimpton, 2015). We investigated the availability of information related to neuropsychological tests on the Internet, a topic that has received little attention in the research literature. Participants and Methods: First, we decided a priori that we would not reveal the terms used in this Internet search, as to not contribute to the problem of threatened test security. We used the Internet search engine “Google” to begin a search using a general question that a person with no neuropsychological expertise would use to access initial results. We obtained 899,000 results for this question. We decided that of these results, we would select from the first five results. One link provided us with a list of 52 commonly used neuropsychological tests. This list also included information about the type of cognitive information that the test was meant to assess. Lastly, we searched for these tests on Google Images and YouTube in order to investigate the extent of the information available. Results: The protocols for 43% of the 52 tests were available on Google Images. At least partial administration demonstrations were available on YouTube for 54% of the 52 neuropsychological tests. These demonstrations revealed the test protocols and basic strategy of the tests. Conclusions: A substantial amount of information regarding neuropsychological tests is available on Google Images and YouTube, threatening the validity of these tests. It is recommended that professional neuropsychological associations begin to develop guidelines regarding appropriate content for websites and identify and continuously monitor websites that contain threatening information

    J/psi suppression at forward rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV

    We present measurements of the J/psi invariant yields in sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV Au+Au collisions at forward rapidity (1.2<|y|<2.2). Invariant yields are presented as a function of both collision centrality and transverse momentum. Nuclear modifications are obtained for central relative to peripheral Au+Au collisions (R_CP) and for various centrality selections in Au+Au relative to scaled p+p cross sections obtained from other measurements (R_AA). The observed suppression patterns at 39 and 62.4 GeV are quite similar to those previously measured at 200 GeV. This similar suppression presents a challenge to theoretical models that contain various competing mechanisms with different energy dependencies, some of which cause suppression and others enhancement.Comment: 365 authors, 10 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables.     Nuclear matter effects on J/ψJ/\psi production in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

    We report on J/ψJ/\psi production from asymmetric Cu+Au heavy-ion collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at both forward (Cu-going direction) and backward (Au-going direction) rapidities. The nuclear modification of J/ψJ/\psi yields in Cu++Au collisions in the Au-going direction is found to be comparable to that in Au++Au collisions when plotted as a function of the number of participating nucleons. In the Cu-going direction, J/ψJ/\psi production shows a stronger suppression. This difference is comparable in magnitude and has the same sign as the difference expected from shadowing effects due to stronger low-xx gluon suppression in the larger Au nucleus. The relative suppression is opposite to that expected from hot nuclear matter dissociation, since a higher energy density is expected in the Au-going direction.Comment: 349 authors, 10 pages, 4 figures, and 4 tables.     Measurement of higher cumulants of net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV

    We report the measurement of cumulants (Cn,n=14C_n, n=1\ldots4) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity (η<0.35|\eta|<0.35) in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g. C1/C2C_1/C_2, C3/C1C_3/C_1) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of C1/C2=μ/σ2C_1/C_2 = \mu/\sigma^2 and C3/C1=Sσ3/μC_3/C_1 = S\sigma^3/\mu can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.Comment: 512 authors, 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. v2 is version accepted for publication in Phys.     L\'evy-stable two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV Au++Au collisions

    We present a detailed measurement of charged two-pion correlation functions in 0%-30% centrality sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV Au++Au collisions by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data are well described by Bose-Einstein correlation functions stemming from L\'evy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extract the correlation strength parameter λ\lambda, the L\'evy index of stability α\alpha and the L\'evy length scale parameter RR as a function of average transverse mass of the pair mTm_T. We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same L\'evy-stable source functions. The λ(mT)\lambda(m_T) measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low mTm_T. The L\'evy length scale parameter R(mT)R(m_T) decreases with increasing mTm_T, following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the L\'evy index of stability α\alpha are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of α=2\alpha=2, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition.Comment: 448 authors, 25 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, 2010 data. v2 is version accepted for publication in Phys.     Cross Section and Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry of η\eta Mesons in p+pp^{\uparrow}+p Collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV at Forward Rapidity

    We present a measurement of the cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetry (ANA_N) for η\eta mesons at large pseudorapidity from s=200\sqrt{s}=200~GeV p+pp^{\uparrow}+p collisions. The measured cross section for 0.5<pT<5.00.5<p_T<5.0~GeV/cc and 3.0<η<3.83.0<|\eta|<3.8 is well described by a next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetries ANA_N have been measured as a function of Feynman-xx (xFx_F) from 0.2<xF<0.70.2<|x_{F}|<0.7, as well as transverse momentum (pTp_T) from 1.0<pT<4.51.0<p_T<4.5~GeV/cc. The asymmetry averaged over positive xFx_F is AN=0.061±0.014\langle{A_{N}}\rangle=0.061{\pm}0.014. The results are consistent with prior transverse single-spin measurements of forward η\eta and π0\pi^{0} mesons at various energies in overlapping xFx_F ranges.     ϕ\phi meson production in dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

    The PHENIX experiment has measured ϕ\phi meson production in dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV using the dimuon and dielectron decay channels. The ϕ\phi meson is measured in the forward (backward) dd-going (Au-going) direction, 1.2<y<2.21.2<y<2.2 (2.2<y<1.2-2.2<y<-1.2) in the transverse-momentum (pTp_T) range from 1--7 GeV/cc, and at midrapidity y<0.35|y|<0.35 in the pTp_T range below 7 GeV/cc. The ϕ\phi meson invariant yields and nuclear-modification factors as a function of pTp_T, rapidity, and centrality are reported. An enhancement of ϕ\phi meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the dd-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in pp++pp collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions.
