GOVERNMENT PAYMENTS TO FARMERS AND REAL AGRICULTURAL ASSET VALUES IN THE 1980S
This study determines the effect of government payments on real agricultural asset values using Bayesian vector autoregression. In developing the empirical model, special attention is focused on the informational content of government payments. The results indicate that government payments to farmers have little effect on real asset values in the long run. In the short run, an increase in government payments to farmers may be associated with decline in asset values.Agricultural Finance,
Fuzzy ARTMAP: A Neural Network Architecture for Incremental Supervised Learning of Analog Multidimensional Maps
A new neural network architecture is introduced for incremental supervised learning of recognition categories and multidimensional maps in response to arbitrary sequences of analog or binary input vectors. The architecture, called Fuzzy ARTMAP, achieves a synthesis of fuzzy logic and Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural networks by exploiting a close formal similarity between the computations of fuzzy subsethood and ART category choice, resonance, and learning. Fuzzy ARTMAP also realizes a new Minimax Learning Rule that conjointly minimizes predictive error and maximizes code compression, or generalization. This is achieved by a match tracking process that increases the ART vigilance parameter by the minimum amount needed to correct a predictive error. As a result, the system automatically learns a minimal number of recognition categories, or "hidden units", to met accuracy criteria. Category proliferation is prevented by normalizing input vectors at a preprocessing stage. A normalization procedure called complement coding leads to a symmetric theory in which the MIN operator (Λ) and the MAX operator (v) of fuzzy logic play complementary roles. Complement coding uses on-cells and off-cells to represent the input pattern, and preserves individual feature amplitudes while normalizing the total on-cell/off-cell vector. Learning is stable because all adaptive weights can only decrease in time. Decreasing weights correspond to increasing sizes of category "boxes". Smaller vigilance values lead to larger category boxes. Improved prediction is achieved by training the system several times using different orderings of the input set. This voting strategy can also be used to assign probability estimates to competing predictions given small, noisy, or incomplete training sets. Four classes of simulations illustrate Fuzzy ARTMAP performance as compared to benchmark back propagation and genetic algorithm systems. These simulations include (i) finding points inside vs. outside a circle; (ii) learning to tell two spirals apart; (iii) incremental approximation of a piecewise continuous function; and (iv) a letter recognition database. Energetic Impact of Jet Inflated Cocoons in Relaxed Galaxy Clusters
Jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the cores of galaxy clusters have
the potential to be a major contributor to the energy budget of the
intracluster medium (ICM). To study the dependence of the interaction between
the AGN jets and the ICM on the parameters of the jets themselves, we present a
parameter survey of two-dimensional (axisymmetric) ideal hydrodynamic models of
back-to-back jets injected into a cluster atmosphere (with varying Mach numbers
and kinetic luminosities). We follow the passive evolution of the resulting
structures for several times longer than the active lifetime of the jet. The
simulations fall into roughly two classes, cocoon-bounded and non-cocoon
bounded sources. We suggest a correspondence between these two classes and the
Faranoff-Riley types. We find that the cocoon-bounded sources inject
significantly more entropy into the core regions of the ICM atmosphere, even
though the efficiency with which energy is thermalized is independent of the
morphological class. In all cases, a large fraction (50--80%) of the energy
injected by the jet ends up as gravitational potential energy due to the

The Warm Ionized Medium in the Milky Way and Other Galaxies
Observations of the "Warm Ionized Medium" (or, equivalently, the "Diffuse
Ionized Gas") of the local ISM, the Perseus arm in the Milky Way, and also in
several other galaxies show strong [NII]6563 (~H-alpha in some cases) and
[SII]6717/[NII]6583 = 0.6 - 0.7 in all locations and objects. Other line ratios
(e.g., [O III]5007/H-beta) vary considerably. Simple photoionization models
reproduce the observed spectra, providing extra heating beyond that supplied by
photoionization is assumed (Reynolds, Haffner, & Tufte 1999). With observed
gas-phase abundances (not solar), the line ratios in the local arm at b = 0 deg
are fitted with no extra heating and (S/H) = 13 ppm (solar is 20 ppm). Local
gas observed at b = -35 deg requires extra heating of about gamma = 0.75, where
gamma is the extra heating in units of 10^{-25} erg H^{-1} s^{-1}. In the
Perseus arm, there are similar results, with a domposition consistent with the
Galactic abundance gradient. The requirements for NGC 891 are similar to the
Perseus arm: little or no extra heating at |z| = 1 kpc and gamma 3 at 2 kpc. In
NGC 891 there is also an increase of 5007/H-alpha with |z| that can only come
about if most of the ionizing radiation is supplied by stars with T~50000 K.
Either their radiation must propagate from the plane to high |z| through very
little intervening matter, or else the stars are located at high |z|. The total
power requirement of the extra heating is <15% of the photoionization power.
[O~II]3727/H-beta can serve as a useful diagnostic of extra heating, but

Observations of X-rays and Thermal Dust Emission from the Supernova Remnant Kes 75
We present Spitzer Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory observations
of the composite Galactic supernova remnant Kes 75 (G29.7-0.3). We use the
detected flux at 24 microns and hot gas parameters from fitting spectra from
new, deep X-ray observations to constrain models of dust emission, obtaining a
dust-to-gas mass ratio M_dust/M_gas ~0.001. We find that a two-component
thermal model, nominally representing shocked swept-up interstellar or
circumstellar material and reverse-shocked ejecta, adequately fits the X-ray
spectrum, albeit with somewhat high implied densities for both components. We
surmise that this model implies a Wolf-Rayet progenitor for the remnant. We
