Greenbelt was built during the Roosevelt Administration at the tail end of the Great Depression. This photograph shows Greenbelt in 1970 and the walkways are deteriorating and walls are covered in graffiti. Greenbelt was a new town built and owned by the federal government, and was inspired by the Garden City movement in Europe. Greenbelt was one of three American Garden Cities, and the first to be constructed. Residential applicants were put through a screening process based on income, occupation, and willingness to participate in communal activities. The screening also excluded African Americans which lasted until 1963. As of 2000 the census reports Greenbelt is 40% African American.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1515/thumbnail.jp

This photograph shows a problem common in many new towns built in the early the twentieth century. As expendable income increased, planned communities modeled on Garden Cities were not able to accomodate either the amount or size of automobiles owned by each family. In this instance, a vehicle is not able to fit in a garage in Greenbelt.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1517/thumbnail.jp

Greenbelt is a planned community in Maryland, created as part of the New Deal during the Roosevelt administration. This photograph shows a well cared for home in Greenbelt, which was built as an American Garden City. Garden Cities, the brainchild of Sir Ebeneezer Howard were popular at the turn of the century as urban planners sought to combine the conveniences of urban life with the pleasantry of country living.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1516/thumbnail.jp
