    An investigation of the beneficial effects of adding carbon nanotubes to standard injection grout

    Mortar grouting is often used in masonry constructions to mitigate structural decay and repair damage by filling cracks and voids, resulting in an improvement in mechanical properties. This paper presents an original experimental investigation on grout with added carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The samples were prepared with different percentages of CNTs, up to 1.2 wt% with respect to the binder, and underwent three‐point bending tests in crack mouth opening displacement mode and compressive tests. The results showed that very small additions (up to 0.12 wt% of CNTs) increased not only flexural and compressive strengths (+73% and 35%, respectively, in comparison with plain mortar) but also fracture energy (+80%). These results can be explained on the basis of a reduction in porosity, as evidenced by mercury intrusion porosimetry, as well as by a crack bridging mechanism and by the probable formation of nucleation sites for hydration products, as observed through scanning electron microscopy

    The standard of living, measured as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, increased dramatically in Venezuela relative to that of the United States from 20 percent in 1920 to 90 percent in 1958, but since then has collapsed to around 30 percent nowadays. What explains these remarkable growth and collapse episodes? Using a standard development accounting framework, we show that the growth episode is mainly accounted for by an increase in capital accumulation and knowledge transfer associated with the foreign direct investment in the booming oil industry. The collapse episode is accounted for equally by a fall in total factor productivity and in capital accumulation. We analyze Venezuela during the collapse episode in the context of a model of heterogeneous production units were policies and institutions favour unproductive in detriment of more productive activities. These policies generate misallocation, lower TFP, and a decline in capital accumulation. We show in the context of an heterogeneous-establishment growth model that distortionary policies can explain between 80 to 95 percent of the current differences in TFP, capital accumulation, and income per capita between Venezuela and the United States.Productivity, physical capital, misallocation, policies

    Hospital implementation of health information technology and quality of care: are they related?

    Recently, there has been considerable effort to promote the use of health information technology (HIT) in order to improve health care quality. However, relatively little is known about the extent to which HIT implementation is associated with hospital patient care quality. We undertook this study to determine the association of various HITs with: hospital quality improvement (QI) practices and strategies; adherence to process of care measures; risk-adjusted inpatient mortality; patient satisfaction; and assessment of patient care quality by hospital quality managers and front-line clinicians.This work was supported by a grant from the Commonwealth Fund.     On the consistency of the Horava Theory

    With the goal of giving evidence for the theoretical consistency of the Horava Theory, we perform a Hamiltonian analysis on a classical model suitable for analyzing its effective dynamics at large distances. The model is the lowest-order truncation of the Horava Theory with the detailed-balance condition. We consider the pure gravitational theory without matter sources. The model has the same potential term of general relativity, but the kinetic term is modified by the inclusion of an arbitrary coupling constant lambda. Since this constant breaks the general covariance under space-time diffeomorphisms, it is believed that arbitrary values of lambda deviate the model from general relativity. We show that this model is not a deviation at all, instead it is completely equivalent to general relativity in a particular partial gauge fixing for it. In doing this, we clarify the role of a second-class constraint of the model.Comment: The wording has been revised in general, specially in abstract, introduction and conclusions.     A simple optimized foam generator and a study on peculiar aspects concerning foams and foamed concrete

    This paper presents a study on peculiar aspects influencing foams and foamed concrete properties, starting from the foam generation up to the compressive strength of the lightweight and ultra-lightweight cementitious material. In particular, after a brief introduction on foam stability, this research work shows a simple and inexpensive foam generator used to produce the commonly used foams in concrete. The significant influence of the air pressure value, of nature and concentration of the foaming agents on density as well as the percentage drainages of the foams produced are therefore discussed. The results show that foams generated with the protein foaming agent have more suitable characteristics to produce foamed concrete, thanks to the significantly longer lifetime compared to foams produced with the synthetic foaming agent. The latter are characterized by very high drainage values even after a few minutes from their generation. Foams are then used to make lightweight (target dry density equal to 600 kg/m3 and 800 kg/m3) and ultra-lightweight (target dry density of 400 kg/m3) foamed concretes that show interesting results in terms of stability also when foams with high drainages are employed. The study provides explications of the differences between the compressive strength of lightweight foamed concrete obtained with foams generated using protein and synthetic foaming agents. Then, the significant influence of the increase in concentration of protein foaming agent on the compressive strength of ultra-lightweight foamed concretes is presented

    The use of Biochar to reduce the carbon footprint of cement-based

    The organic waste management is a most current topic, because its processing and degradation it is responsible for emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases, leading to serious environmental problems. Limited oxygen thermochemical processes, such as pyrolysis or gasification, have demonstrated the energy recovery potential of the treated biomass and its environmental benefits. However, the solid part of the process -Biochar- it is considered as a waste, as only its coarse ash can be used as soil improvers. Nevertheless, several researchers have explored its potential application as green filler in order to reduce the carbon footprint both of cement production and cement-based construction materials. In this work, Biochar microparticles were used both as a filler inside the cement paste and mortar composites and as a substitute for the cement powder inside the mixes. Based on previous work, this investigation has a twofold objective: To understand the full influence of the use of an optimized percentage of Biochar (2% with respect to the weight of the cement) either as a filler in the mixture or as a substitute for cement, while guaranteeing an improvement in the strength without losing ductility. The results showed that 2 wt% of Biochar's particles are sufficient to increase the strength and toughness of the cement and mortar composites and, in place of the cement in the mixture, can maintain the mechanical properties equal to those of the reference samples

    Implementing Health Reform at the State Level: Access and Care for Vulnerable Populations

    The Affordable Care Act1 (ACA) promises to improve access to coverage and care for two vulnerable groups: low-income persons who are excluded by a lack of resources and chronically ill and disabled people who are excluded by the dysfunction of our existing insurance and care delivery systems. ACA’s sprawling provisions raise a wealth of implementation challenges that are exacerbated by the compromises required to move reform through Congress. In particular, the compromise between regulatory/public program advocates and advocates for private, market-driven programs requires thoughtful regulatory coordination between public and private health systems. The anticipated increase in coverage is roughly split between expansions in Medicaid and private enrollment, each of which is projected to cover approximately 16 million Americans.2 How ACA will be implemented has been the subject of constant attention since its enactment, and federal regulators have been generating program and regulatory information with commendable assiduity. However, state-level reform will be crucial to the effectiveness of the ACA implementation for low-income and chronically ill people. Federal structural regulations will be implemented and interpreted at the state level. As learned from the varied implementation of Medicaid and other state/ federal programs, state efforts can either effectuate or frustrate the intent of health coverage measures. This article is focused on five key implementation issues states face as they turn to new tasks in the governance of Medicaid and private non-group and small group coverage. The Medicaid reforms and the extension of private coverage through Exchanges raise separate challenges. However, as described here, many key implementation issues apply to both systems

    Assessment of energy return on energy investment (EROEI) of oil bearing crops for renewable fuel production

    As reported in literature the production of biodiesel should lead to a lower energy consumption than those obtainable with its use. So, to justify its consumption, a sustainable and “low input” production should be carried out. In order to assess the sustainability of Linum usitatissimum, Camelina sativa and Brassica carinata cultivation for biodiesel production in terms of energy used compared to that obtained, the index EROEI (Energy Return On Energy Invested) has been used. At this aim, an experimental field was realised in the south-eastern Sicilian land. During the autumn-winter crop cycle, no irrigation was carried out and some suitable agricultural practices have been carried out taking into account the peculiarity of each type of used seeds. The total energy consumed for the cultivation of oil bearing crops from sowing to the production of biodiesel represents the Input of the process. In particular, this concerned the energy embodied in machinery and tools utilized, in seed, chemical fertilizer and herbicide but also the energy embodied in diesel fuels and lubricant oils. In addition, the energy consumption relating to machines and reagents required for the processes of extraction and transesterification of the vegetable oil into biodiesel have been calculated for each crops. The energy obtainable from biodiesel production, taking into account the energy used for seed pressing and for vegetable oil transesterification into biodiesel, represents the Output of the process. The ratio Output/Input gets the EROEI index which in the case of Camelina sativa and Linum usatissimum is greater than one. These results show that the cultivation of these crops for biofuels production is convenient in terms of energy return on energy investment. The EROEI index for Brassica carinata is lower than one.
