When Normal Distributions Fail: An Application of Feature Engineering to YouTube Videos
YouTube has turned creating, watching, and interacting with videos into a mainstream activity and has substantial impact on modern society as the most popular video sharing site in the world. However, there is a lack of published research using statistically designed experiments which can aid content creators in making and optimizing thumbnails and meta-level features such as the title, description, and length of videos. This research explores the effect specific features of YouTube videos have on video views. Understanding which features have a significant impact will allow creators to fine-tune and select a subset of features which maximize views. In addition, a conceptual model can be used to further understand human-computer interaction, decision making, and variability of a process. Results from this research can be used to identify which videos features should be included to maximize views and identify non-value-added features or steps in the production process. Keywords: Industrial engineering, YouTube, video sharing, ANOVA, feature engineering, experimental design, signal detection theor
Libros, cuadernos y carpetas
The Current State of Cephalopod Science and Perspectives on the Most Critical Challenges Ahead From Three Early-Career Researchers
International audienceHere, three researchers who have recently embarked on careers in cephalopod biology discuss the current state of the field and offer their hopes for the future. Seven major topics are explored genetics, aquaculture, climate change, welfare, behavior, cognition, and neurobiology. Recent developments in each of these fields are reviewed and the potential of emerging technologies to address specific gaps in knowledge about cephalopods are discussed. Throughout, the authors highlight specific challenges that merit particular focus in the near-term. This review and prospectus is also intended to suggest some concrete near-term goals to cephalopod researchers and inspire those working outside the field to consider the revelatory potential of these remarkable creatures
Moose Winter Habitat Use on Monument Ridge, Wyoming
It is important to investigate the effects of forest management on non-target species which may be detrimentally affected by management for other species. The Bridger-Teton National Forest is conducting thinning and prescribed burning of forest stands on Monument Ridge in western Wyoming to promote aspen regeneration for mule deer and elk habitat and to reduce the risk of wildfire near urban areas. As a significant remaining patch of mixed conifer forest after the 2018 Roosevelt Fire, which burned nearly 65,000 acres, Monument Ridge is thought to be an important location for wintering moose. However, the effects of this management on moose in the area are unknown. Conifer removal may be detrimental to overwintering moose since conifer cover reduces snow depth and decreases energetic costs of movement across a landscape. Increased cover may also serve as a thermal refuge and create a cooler microclimate during warm periods. We used photos from 24 motion-triggered camera traps to assess moose use of thinned and wildfire-burned sites relative to untreated areas over the 2021–2022 winter, from October 1 to April 30. We hypothesized that moose occupancy will be positively-related to conifer cover and negatively-related to burned landscapes
