    CFRAMP's large pelagic fish tagging program

    CFRAMP\u27s Large Pelagic Fish Tagging Program was established to examine the distribution and movement patterns of Thunnus atlanticus (blackfin tuna), Acanthocybium solandri (wahoo), Coryphaena hippurus (dolphinfish), and Scomberomorus cavalla (king mackerel), large pelagic fish species of commercial importance to several Caribbean countries. The Program explored several means to facilitate fish tag and release activities, involving collaborative partnerships with national fisheries administrations, the recreational fishing sector, and individual commercial fishers. A Iotal of 1,143 fish were tagged and released in the coastal waters of several islands within the Eastern Caribbean: 787 blackfin tuna, 250 wahoo, 89 dolphinfish, and 17 king mackerel. To date, only 13 recaptures have been reported. Eleven (11) blackfin tuna, released in the coastal waters of St Vincent and the Grenadines were recaptured near to, or at original release sites after times at liberty ranging from 5 d to 1,230 d. Similarly, 2 king mackerel, released off the west coast of Trinidad, were recaptured very near original release sites after 74 and 129 d at liberty

    A second independent audit of electroconvulsive therapy in England, 2019: Usage, demographics, consent, and adherence to guidelines and legislation

    Objectives. To assess progress towards improving the administering of Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in England since an audit covering 2011, 2013 and 2015. The same information was gathered, for 2019, on usage, demographics, consent, and adherence to national guidelines and the Mental Health Act. Design and Methods. Freedom of Information Act requests were sent to 56 National Health Service Trusts. Results. Thirty-seven trusts (66%) provided data. The gradual decline in the use of ECT in England has levelled off at about 2,500 people per year. There was a 47-fold difference between the Trusts with the highest and lowest rates per capita. Most recipients are still women (67%), and over 60 (58%). Only one Trust could report how many people received psychological therapy prior to ECT, as required by government (N.I.C.E.) guidelines. More than a third of ECT (37%) is still given without consent, with 18% of Trusts non-compliant with legislation concerning second opinions. There were slight declines, compared to a previous audit, in the use of standardised depression scales, down to 30%, and standardised measures of cognitive dysfunction, down to 24%. Only six Trusts provided any data for positive outcomes; seven for adverse effects. None provided data on efficacy or adverse effects beyond end of treatment. Twelve used identical sentences to each other, verbatim, in response to one or more questions. Conclusions. Given the apparent failure of current monitoring and accrediting ECT clinics in England, by the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ ECT Accreditation Service (ECTAS), an independent government sponsored review is urgently needed

    Precise bounds on the Higgs boson mass

    We study the renormalization group evolution of the Higgs quartic coupling λH\lambda_{H} and the Higgs mass mHm_{H} in the Standard Model. The one loop equation for λH\lambda_{H} is non linear and it is of the Riccati type which we numerically and analytically solve in the energy range [mt,EGU][m_{t},E_{GU}] where mtm_{t} is the mass of the top quark and EGU=1014E_{GU}=10^{14} GeV. We find that depending on the value of λH(mt)\lambda_{H}(m_{t}) the solution for λH(E)\lambda_{H}(E) may have singularities or zeros and become negative in the former energy range so the ultra violet cut off of the standard model should be below the energy where the zero or singularity of λH\lambda_{H} occurs. We find that for 0.369≤λH(mt)≤0.6130.369\leq\lambda_{H}(m_{t})\leq0.613 the Standard Model is valid in the whole range [mt,EGU][m_{t},E_{GU}]. We consider two cases of the Higgs mass relation to the parameters of the standard model: (a) the effective potential method and (b) the tree level mass relations. The limits for λH(mt)\lambda_{H}(m_{t}) correspond to the following Higgs mass relation 150≤mH⪅193150\leq m_{H}\lessapprox 193 GeV. We also plot the dependence of the ultra violet cut off on the value of the Higgs mass. We analyze the evolution of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field and show that it depends on the value of the Higgs mass. The pattern of the energy behavior of the VEV is different for the cases (a) and (b). The behavior of λH(E)\lambda_{H}(E), mH(E)m_{H}(E) and v(E)v(E) indicates the existence of a phase transition in the standard model. For the effective potential this phase transition occurs at the mass range mH≈180m_{H}\approx 180 GeV and for the tree level mass relations at mH≈168m_{H}\approx 168 GeV.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures.
