Flux tubes, visons, and vortices in spin-charge separated superconductors

The idea of spin-charge separation in cuprate superconductors has been recently energized by Senthil and Fisher who formulated a Z_2 gauge theory and, within its context, proposed a ``vison detection'' experiment as a test for topological order in a sample with multiply connected geometry. Here we show that the same experiment can be performed to test for the spin-charge separation in U(1) [but not in SU(2)] theory and argue that vortex core spectroscopy can in fact distinguish between the different symmetries of the fictitious gauge field.Comment: 3 pages, 1 ps figure. Bound states and extended states around a single vortex in the d-wave superconductors

Making use of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for the d-wave superconductors, we investigate the quasi-particle spectrum around a single vortex. Taking pFξ=10p_F\xi=10, we found that there are bound states which are localized around the vortex core, and extended states which are rather uniform, for E<Δ|E|<\Delta where EE is the quasi-particle energy and Δ\Delta is the asymptotic value of the order parameter for away from the vortex.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Quasiparticle spectra in the vicinity of a d-wave vortex

We discuss the evolution of the local quasiparticle spectral density and the related tunneling conductance measurable by the scanning tunneling microscope, as a function of distance r and angle \theta from the vortex core in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We consider the effects of electronic disorder and of a strongly anisotropic tunneling matrix element, and show that in real materials they will likely obscure the ~1/r asymptotic tail in the zero-bias tunneling conductance expected from the straightforward semiclassical analysis. We also give a prediction for the tunneling conductance anisotropy around the vortex core and establish a connection to the structure of the tunneling matrix element.Comment: 9 pages REVTeX + 5 PostScript figures.
