    Spectroscopy, Equation Of State And Monopole Percolation In Lattice QED With Two Flavors

    Non-compact lattice QED with two flavors of light dynamical quarks is simulated on 16416^4 lattices, and the chiral condensate, monopole density and susceptibility and the meson masses are measured. Data from relatively high statistics runs at relatively small bare fermion masses of 0.005, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 (lattice units) are presented. Three independent methods of data analysis indicate that the critical point occurs at β=0.225(5)\beta =0.225(5) and that the monopole condensation and chiral symmetry breaking transitions are coincident. The monopole condensation data satisfies finite size scaling hypotheses with critical indices compatible with four dimensional percolation. The best chiral equation of state fit produces critical exponents (δ=2.31\delta=2.31, βmag=0.763\beta_{mag}=0.763) which deviate significantly from mean field expectations. Data for the ratio of the sigma to pion masses produces an estimate of the critical index δ\delta in good agreement with chiral condensate measurements. In the strong coupling phase the ratio of the meson masses are Mσ2/Mρ20.35M_\sigma^2/M_\rho^2\approx 0.35, MA12/Mρ21.4M_{A_1}^2/M_\rho^2\approx 1.4 and Mπ2/Mρ20.0M_\pi^2/M_\rho^2\approx 0.0, while on the weak coupling side of the transition Mπ2/Mρ21.0M_\pi^2/M_\rho^2\approx 1.0, MA12/Mρ21.0M_{A_1}^2/M_\rho^2\approx 1.0, indicating the restoration of chiral symmetry.\footnote{\,^{}}{August 1992}Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures (not included

    The Block Spin Renormalization Group Approach and Two-Dimensional Quantum Gravity

    A block spin renormalization group approach is proposed for the dynamical triangulation formulation of two-dimensional quantum gravity. The idea is to update link flips on the block lattice in response to link flips on the original lattice. Just as the connectivity of the original lattice is meant to be a lattice representation of the metric, the block links are determined in such a way that the connectivity of the block lattice represents a block metric. As an illustration, this approach is applied to the Ising model coupled to two-dimensional quantum gravity. The correct critical coupling is reproduced, but the critical exponent is obscured by unusually large finite size effects.Comment: 10 page

    QCD Thermodynamics at Nt=8N_t=8 and 12

    We present results from studies of high temperature QCD with two flavors of Kogut-Susskind quarks on 163×816^3\times 8 lattices at a quark mass of amq=0.00625am_q=0.00625 and on 243×1224^3\times 12 lattices at quark masses amq=0.008am_q=0.008 and 0.016. The value of the crossover temperature is consistent with that obtained on coarser lattices and/or at larger quark masses.     An Effective Model for Crumpling in Two Dimensions?

    We investigate the crumpling transition for a dynamically triangulated random surface embedded in two dimensions using an effective model in which the disordering effect of the XX variables on the correlations of the normals is replaced by a long-range ``antiferromagnetic'' term. We compare the results from a Monte Carlo simulation with those obtained for the standard action which retains the XX's and discuss the nature of the phase transition.Comment: 5 page

    Self-reported taste and smell alterations and the liking of oral nutritional supplements with sensory-adapted flavors in cancer patients receiving systemic antitumor treatment

    Purpose Taste and smell alterations (TAs and SAs) are often reported by patients with cancer receiving systemic antitumor therapy and can negatively impact food intake and quality of life. This study aimed to examine the occurrence of TAs and SAs and investigate the impact of TAs on overall liking of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) with warming and cooling sensations. Methods Patients receiving systemic antitumor therapy completed a questionnaire on sensory alterations and evaluated overall liking of 5 prototype flavors of Nutridrink (R) Compact Protein (hot tropical ginger (HTG), hot mango (HM), cool red fruits (CRF), cool lemon (CL), and neutral (N)) on a 10-point scale via a sip test. Differences between patients with and without TAs were investigated using permutation analysis. Results Fifty patients with various cancer types and treatments were included. Thirty patients (60%) reported TAs and 13 (26%) experienced SAs. Three flavors were rated highly with a liking score > 6 (CRF 6.8 +/- 1.7; N 6.5 +/- 1.9; HTG 6.0 +/- 2.0). Larger variation in ONS liking scores was observed in patients with TAs with or without SAs (4.5-6.9 and 4.6-7.2, respectively) vs. patients without TAs (5.9-6.5). TAs were associated with increased liking of CRF (Delta = + 0.9) and N (Delta = + 1.0) flavors. Conclusions TAs and SAs are common in patients with cancer undergoing systemic antitumor therapy. Patients with TAs were more discriminant in liking of ONS flavors compared to patients without TAs, and sensory-adapted flavors appeared to be appreciated.     PURPOSE: Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are commonly prescribed to malnourished patients to improve their nutritional status. Taste and smell changes in patients with cancer can affect the palatability of ONS. The present study investigated: (1) the palatability of six ONS in testicular cancer patients before, during the first two cycles, and after chemotherapy; (2) the relation between the palatability and taste and smell function; (3) the metallic taste of these ONS. METHODS: Twenty-one testicular cancer patients undergoing first-line cisplatin-based chemotherapy participated. Two milk-based (vanilla; strawberry), two juice-based (apple; orange), and two yoghurt-based (vanilla-lemon; peach-orange) ONS were tested. A questionnaire was used to assess the palatability of ONS and to which extent the attribute ‘metallic’ was applicable. Taste and smell function were measured using taste strips and ‘Sniffin’ Sticks’, respectively. RESULTS: The palatability of ONS was highly variable among patients. The milk-based strawberry ONS was preferred most before, during, and after chemotherapy. The liking of the milk-based vanilla ONS tended to decrease over time (p = 0.053), whereas the liking of the other ONS remained stable. A higher smell threshold and a lower sour taste threshold were correlated to a decreased liking of the milk-based vanilla ONS. The two juice-based ONS tended to taste more metallic during than before chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: Health care professionals and patients should be aware that the palatability of ONS can change over time. Regular structured contact between health care professionals and patients regarding the choice of ONS seems warranted.     Thermodynamics of lattice QCD with two light quark flavours on a 16^3 x 8 lattice II

    We have extended our earlier simulations of the high temperature behaviour of lattice QCD with two light flavours of staggered quarks on a 163×816^3 \times 8 lattice to lower quark mass (m_q=0.00625). The transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma is observed at 6/g2=5.49(2)6/g^2=5.49(2) corresponding to a temperature of Tc140T_c \approx 140MeV. We present measurements of observables which probe the nature of the quark-gluon plasma and serve to distinguish it from hadronic matter.     We present an analysis of hadronic spectroscopy for Wilson valence quarks with dynamical staggered fermions at lattice coupling 6/g2=β=5.66/g^2 = \beta=5.6 at sea quark mass amq=0.01am_q=0.01 and 0.025, and of Wilson valence quarks in quenched approximation at β=5.85\beta=5.85 and 5.95, both on 163×3216^3 \times 32 lattices. We make comparisons with our previous results with dynamical staggered fermions at the same parameter values but on 16416^4 lattices doubled in the temporal direction.Comment: 32 page
