    The catalytic oxidation of organic contaminants in a packed bed reactor

    The catalytic oxidation of several hydrocarbons was studied over noble metal and metal oxide catalysts. A fast empirical method was developed to determine the minimum operating temperature required to guarantee complete conversion of the hydrocarbon.\ud \ud The influence of the operating parameters such as the inlet concentration and residence time, as well as the chemical character of the component to be oxidized, have been investigated. The results can be described satisfactorily by a simple isothermal, plug flow reactor model and first-order reaction kinetics. In the case of simultaneous oxidation of different components a significant mixture effect was not observed. The presence of water in the feed did significantly inhibit the oxidation of alkanes.\ud \ud Of the applied catalysts, Pt was the most effective for the combustion of the alkenes, whereas Pd showed a higher activity for the oxidation of alkanes

    Predicative Ability of QCD Sum Rules for Decuplet Baryons

    QCD sum rules for decuplet baryon two-point functions are investigated using a comprehensive Monte-Carlo based procedure. In this procedure, all uncertainties in the QCD input parameters are incorporated simultaneously, resulting in realistic estimates of the uncertainties in the extracted phenomenological parameters. Correlations between the QCD input parameters and the phenomenological parameters are studied by way of scatter plots. The predicted couplings are useful in evaluating matrix elements of decuplet baryons in the QCD sum rule approach. They are also used to check a cubic scaling law between baryon couplings and masses, as recently found by Dey and coworkers. The results show a significant reduction in the scaling constant and some possible deviations from the cubic law.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, 5 PS figures embedded with psfig.st

    Positive and negative-parity flavor-octet baryons in coupled QCD sum rules

    We apply the method of the QCD sum rule, in which positive- and negative-parity baryons couple with each other, to the flavor-octet hyperons and investigate the parity splittings. We also reexamine the nucleon in the method, which was studied in our previous paper, by carefully choosing the Borel weight. Both in the nucleon and hyperon channels the obtained sum rules turn out to have a very good Borel stability and also have a Borel window, an energy region in which the OPE converges and the pole contribution dominates over the continuum contribution. The predicted masses of the positive- and negative-parity baryons reproduce the experimental ones fairly well in the Λ\Lambda and Σ\Sigma channels, if we assign the Λ(1670)\Lambda(1670) and the Σ(1620)\Sigma(1620) to the parity partners of the Λ\Lambda and the Σ\Sigma, respectively. This implies that the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) is not the party partner of the Λ\Lambda and may be a flavor-singlet or exotic state. In the Ξ\Xi channel, the sum rule predicts the mass of the negative-parity state to be about 1.8 GeV, which leads to two possibilities; one is that the observed state with the closest mass, Ξ(1690)\Xi(1690), is the parity partner and the other is that the parity partner is not yet found but exists around 1.8 GeV.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Eta-nucleon coupling constant in QCD with SU(3) symmetry breaking

    We study the η\etaNN coupling constant using the method of QCD sum rules starting from the vacuum-to-eta correlation function of the interpolating fields of two nucleons. The matrix element of this correlation has been taken with respect to nucleon spinors to avoid unwanted pole contribution. The SU(3)-flavor symmetry breaking effects have been accounted for via the η\eta-mass, s-quark mass and eta decay constant to leading order. Out of the four sum rules obtained by taking the ratios of the two sum rules in conjunction with the two sum rules in nucleon mass, three are found to give mutually consistent results. We find the SU(3) breaking effects significant, as large as 50% of the SU(3) symmetric part.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure

    Evolution of Plant Sucrose Uptake Transporters

    In angiosperms, sucrose uptake transporters (SUTs) have important functions especially in vascular tissue. Here we explore the evolutionary origins of SUTs by analysis of angiosperm SUTs and homologous transporters in a vascular early land plant, Selaginella moellendorffii, and a non-vascular plant, the bryophyte Physcomitrella patens, the charophyte algae Chlorokybus atmosphyticus, several red algae and fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Plant SUTs cluster into three types by phylogenetic analysis. Previous studies using angiosperms had shown that types I and II are localized to the plasma membrane while type III SUTs are associated with vacuolar membrane. SUT homologs were not found in the chlorophyte algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carterii. However, the characean algae Chlorokybus atmosphyticus contains a SUT homolog (CaSUT1) and phylogenetic analysis indicated that it is basal to all other streptophyte SUTs analyzed. SUTs are present in both red algae and S. pombe but they are less related to plant SUTs than CaSUT1. Both Selaginella and Physcomitrella encode type II and III SUTs suggesting that both plasma membrane and vacuolar sucrose transporter activities were present in early land plants. It is likely that SUT transporters are important for scavenging sucrose from the environment and intracellular compartments in charophyte and non-vascular plants. Type I SUTs were only found in eudicots and we conclude that they evolved from type III SUTs, possibly through loss of a vacuolar targeting sequence. Eudicots utilize type I SUTs for phloem (vascular tissue) loading while monocots use type II SUTs for phloem loading. We show that HvSUT1 from barley, a type II SUT, reverted the growth defect of the Arabidopsis atsuc2 (type I) mutant. This indicates that type I and II SUTs evolved similar (and interchangeable) phloem loading transporter capabilities independently

    Situational Voluntary Compliance: Adherence to COVID-19 Social Distancing Guidelines in the 2020 Local Outbreak in Beijing

    To mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic many countries have adopted mandatory social distancing measures, but in China, social distancing was implemented only as an advisory guideline. This article seeks to understand whether, and why Chinese citizens adhered to such social distancing advice. The data, derived from a survey in the 2020 local outbreak in Beijing, show that voluntary compliance was hardly influ-enced by motivational predictors, but was almost exclusively dependent on a single, key situational predictor, namely people’s practical capacity to follow social distancing. These findings demonstrate that the emphasis on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations in existing compliance research does not do justice to the situational nature of voluntary compliance observed within this particular context. We discuss theoretical implications of these findings for the compliance literature. Moreover, we use these findings to provide (tentative) insight into the compliance challenges that China was facing during the course of the pandemic, and to speculate about ways in which compliance may be enhanced during future pandemic outbreaks in China.</p

    Use of amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis to identify medically important Candida spp., including C. dubliniensis.

    Non-Candida albicans Candida species are increasingly being isolated. These species show differences in levels of resistance to antimycotic agents and mortality. Therefore, it is important to be able to correctly identify the causative organism to the species level. Identification of C. dubliniensis in particular remains problematic due to the high degree of phenotypic similarity between this species and C. albicans. The use of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis as an identification method for medically important Candida species was investigated. Our results show very clear differences among medically important Candida species. Furthermore, when screening a large collection of clinical isolates previously identified on CHROMagar as C. albicans, we found a misidentification rate of 6%. AFLP analysis is universally applicable, and the patterns can easily be stored in a general, accessible database. Therefore, AFLP might prove to be a reliable method for the identification of medically important Candida species

    Correlator of Topological Charge Densities in Instanton Model in QCD

    The QCD sum rule for the correlator of topological charge densities and related to it longitudinal part of the correlator of singlet axial currents is considered in the framework of instanton model. The coupling constant of eta'-meson with the singlet axial current is determined. Its value appears to be in a good coincidence with the value determined recently from the connection of the part of proton spin, carried by u,d,s quarks, with the derivative of QCD topological susceptibility. From the same sum rule eta-eta' mixing angle is found in the framework of two mixing angles model. Its value is close to that found in the chiral effective theory. The correlator of topological charge densities at large momenta is calculated.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Calculation of gπNS11g_{\pi NS_{11}} and gηNS11g_{\eta NS_{11}} Couplings in QCD Sum Rules

    We calculate the coupling constants, gπNS11g_{\pi NS_{11}} and gηNS11,usingQCDsumrulesinthepresenceofanexternalmesonfield.AcovariantderivativeisintroducedwithintheS11interpolatingfieldsothatinthenonrelativisticlimitthefielddominantlyreducestotwoquarksintheswavestateandonequarkinthepwavestate.OurresultforthecouplingsobtainedbyfurthermakinguseofthesoftmesontheoremqualitativelyagreeswithitsphenomenologicalvalueextractedfromtheS11(1535)decaywidth.Thepredictionforthecouplingshoweverdependonthevalueofquarkgluoncondensate,g_{\eta NS_{11}}, using QCD sum rules in the presence of an external meson field. A covariant derivative is introduced within the S_{11} interpolating field so that in the nonrelativistic limit the field dominantly reduces to two quarks in the s-wave state and one quark in the p-wave state. Our result for the couplings obtained by further making use of the soft-meson theorem qualitatively agrees with its phenomenological value extracted from the S_{11}(1535) decay width. The prediction for the couplings however depend on the value of quark-gluon condensate, $, which is also important in the calculation of the S_{11}(1535) mass itself within the sum rule approach.Comment: 8 pages (no figure), revte
