The skin exposed to UV light undergoes changes in morphology and function, this influences the local production of cytokines and impairs the antigen recognition and processing. The chronic sun exposure on the skin of dogs with ages of eight to ten years, short hair coat and clear, with little pigmentation and glabra, usually progresses to actinic keratosis (AK) and culminates in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Essential part of the malignant phenotype is angiogenesis, which is the promoter Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) that plays on endothelial cells. Additionally angiogenesis, the growth of neoplastic cells requires increasing cell membrane proteins involved in nutrition, as the Glucose Transporter 1 (GLUT 1), which is essential for survival and proliferation of tumor cells. Thus, we proposed to investigate the value of VEGF and GLUT 1 in tumor progression employing for this skin of dogs concomitantly presented the AK (AK group), SCC (SCC Group) absent from skin diseases and skin (Lesions distant Group), comparing them with the skin of healthy dogs without histopathological changes (Control Group); also evaluate whether treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may interfere with markings of antibodies, as well as evaluating the intensity of these markings differed in the skin of dogs with tumor recurrence of which did not. For this, 15 dogs were selected with AK and SCC lesions and with lesions distant skin and 15 dogs with normal skin. The intensity of expression of GLUT 1 and VEGF was investigated by use of immunohistochemistry and the results were evaluated statistically. The AK and Lesions distant Groups showed similar behavior as the intensity staining of VEGF; while the intensity of GLUT 1 was similar in AK and SCC Groups. Samples from the AK Group who did not receive NSAIDs, VEGF showed higher intensity staining than the AK group receiving NSAID; already in dogs with tumor recurrence ...A pele exposta à luz UV sofre alteração nas funções e características morfológicas, isto influencia a produção local de citocinas e prejudica o reconhecimento e processamento de antígenos.

This study aimed to compare the effects of two doses of doxycycline hyclate on red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells and platelets of dogs with ehrlichiosis. Group I, comprised of healthy dogs (n=6), negative on serology for Ehrlichia canis and Leptospira spp., real time PCR for E. canis and Anaplasma platys, and on semi–nested PCR for Babesia canis; Groups II (n=6) and III (n=6), comprised of dogs with suggestive clinical history, positive serology and/or real time PCR for E. canis, negative on research for anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies and real time PCR for A. platys, and on semi–nested PCR for B. canis were studied. Sick dogs were treated with doxycycline hyclate every 12 hours, by mouth, for 30 days (5 mg/kg, group II; 10 mg/kg, group III). Complete blood counts were performed before, after 15 days, and 10 days after period of treatment was complete. No difference between groups at the studied time points were noticed for red blood cells, hemoglobin, haematocrit and white blood cells. Difference was observed for platelets between group I and groups II and III (p<0.0001) at the study onset. After 15 days of treatment, the mean platelet for group III was lower than groups I (p=0.008) and II (p=0.0007), indicative of persistent thrombocytopenia, already absent in group II. No difference between groups was noticed at final time point, which suggests that both treatments increased platelets in dogs naturally infected with E. canis

Cutaneous food allergy is an adverse immunological response, triggered by antigenic dietary components that may escape the digestion process and are absorbed intact through the gastrointestinal mucosa. In Brazil, there are only a few reports on cutaneous food allergy and antigenicity of food components used in pet food production. Thus, the aim of this report was to assess and describe data from medical records of canine patients diagnosed with cutaneous food allergy at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital from Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in order to evaluate epidemiological and clinical aspects related to this skin problem. From 2007 to 2012, 29 dogs received the diagnosis of cutaneous food allergy after an eight-week hypoallergenic elimination trial. Among them, purebred dogs were more frequent, as well as females, and their mean age was 50.4 months old. Pruritus was reported in all cases, especially in interdigital areas. In order to establish the diagnosis, most patients received home-cooked elimination diet, based on potato and lamb in approximately 80% of the cases. Besides, it was highlighted the importance of the hypoallergenic elimination diet being rigorously followed by dogs' owners, aiming the adequate control of the clinical signs related to cutaneous food allergy
