    The QSO evolution derived from the HBQS and other complete QSO surveys

    An ESO Key programme dedicated to an Homogeneous Bright QSO Survey (HBQS) has been completed. 327 QSOs (Mb<-23, 0.3<z<2.2) have been selected over 555 deg^2 with 15<B<18.75. For B<16.4 the QSO surface density turns out to be a factor 2.2 higher than what measured by the PG survey, corresponding to a surface density of 0.013+/-.006 deg^{-2}. If the Edinburgh QSO Survey is included, an overdensity of a factor 2.5 is observed, corresponding to a density of 0.016+/-0.005 deg^{-2}. In order to derive the QSO optical luminosity function (LF) we used Monte Carlo simulations that take into account of the selection criteria, photometric errors and QSO spectral slope distribution. The LF can be represented with a Pure Luminosity Evolution (L(z)\propto(1+z)^k) of a two power law both for q_0=0.5 and q_0=0.1. For q_0=0.5 k=3.26, slower than the previous Boyle's (1992) estimations of k=3.45. A flatter slope beta=-3.72 of the bright part of the LF is also required. The observed overdensity of bright QSOs is concentrated at z<0.6. It results that in the range 0.3<z<0.6 the luminosity function is flatter than observed at higher redshifts. In this redshift range, for Mb<-25, 32 QSOs are observed instead of 19 expected from our best-fit PLE model. This feature requires a luminosity dependent luminosity evolution in order to satisfactorily represent the data in the whole 0.3<z<2.2 interval.Comment: Invited talk in "Wide Field Spectroscopy" (20-24 May 1996, Athens), eds.     Some frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnets, such as Y2Mo2O7, show a spin-freezing transition and magnetic irreversibilities below a temperature Tf similar to what is observed nonlinear magnetization measurements on Y2Mo2O7 that provide strong evidence that there is an underlying thermodynamic phase transition at Tf, which is characterized by critical exponents \gamma \approx 2.8 and \beta \approx 0.8. These values are typical of those found in random spin glasses, despite the fact that the level of random disorder in Y2Mo2O7 is immeasurably small.Comment: Latex file, calls for 4 encapsulated postscript figures (included).     Finding the First Stars: The Hamburg/ESO Objective Prism Survey

    We report on a search for extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-3.0) turnoff stars in the Hamburg/ESO objective prism survey (HES). Metal-poor stars are selected by automatic spectral classification. Extensive simulations show that the selection efficiency for turnoff stars of [Fe/H]25% at B<16.5. Since the HES is more than 1 mag deeper than the HK survey of Beers et al.     On the Metallicity-Color Relations and Bimodal Color Distributions in Extragalactic Globular Cluster Systems

    We perform a series of numerical experiments to study how the nonlinear metallicity--color relations predicted by different stellar population models affect the color distributions observed in extragalactic globular cluster systems. % We present simulations in the UBVRIJHKUBVRIJHK bandpasses based on five different sets of simple stellar population (SSP) models. The presence of photometric scatter in the colors is included as well. % We find that unimodal metallicity distributions frequently ``project'' into bimodal color distributions. The likelihood of this effect depends on both the mean and dispersion of the metallicity distribution, as well as of course on the SSP model used for the transformation. % Adopting the Teramo-SPoT SSP models for reference, we find that optical--to--near-IR colors should be favored with respect to other colors to avoid the bias effect in globular cluster color distributions discussed by \citet{yoon06}. In particular, colors such as \vh\ or \vk are more robust against nonlinearity of the metallicity--color relation, and an observed bimodal distribution in such colors is more likely to indicate a true underlying bimodal metallicity distribution. Similar conclusions come from the simulations based on different SSP models, although we also identify exceptions to this result.Comment: ApJ accepte

    The True Incidence of Magnetism among Field White Dwarfs

    We study the incidence of magnetism in white dwarfs from three large and well-observed samples of hot, cool, and nearby white dwarfs in order to test whether the fraction of magnetic degenerates is biased, and whether it varies with effective temperature, cooling age, or distance. The magnetic fraction is considerably higher for the cool sample of Bergeron, Ruiz, and Leggett, and the Holberg, Oswalt, and Sion sample of local white dwarfs that it is for the generally-hotter white dwarfs of the Palomar Green Survey. We show that the mean mass of magnetic white dwarfs in this survey is 0.93 solar masses or more, so there may be a strong bias against their selection in the magnitude-limited Palomar Green Survey. We argue that this bias is not as important in the samples of cool and nearby white dwarfs. However, this bias may not account for all of the difference in the magnetic fractions of these samples. It is not clear that the magnetic white dwarfs in the cool and local samples are drawn from the same population as the hotter PG stars. In particular, two or threee of the cool sample are low-mass white dwarfs in unresolved binary systems. Moreover, there is a suggestion from the local sample that the fractional incidence may increase with decreasing temperature, luminosity, and/or cooling age. Overall, the true incidence of magnetism at the level of 2 megagauss or greater is at least 10%, and could be higher. Limited studies capable of detecting lower field strengths down to 10 kilogauss suggest by implication that the total fraction may be substantially higher than 10%.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, Astronomical Journal in press -- Jan 2003 issu

    Order induced by dipolar interactions in a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet

    We study the classical Heisenberg model for spins on a pyrochlore lattice interacting via long range dipole-dipole forces and nearest neighbor exchange. Antiferromagnetic exchange alone is known not to induce ordering in this system. We analyze low temperature order resulting from the combined interactions, both by using a mean-field approach and by examining the energy cost of fluctuations about an ordered state. We discuss behavior as a function of the ratio of the dipolar and exchange interaction strengths and find two types of ordered phase. We relate our results to the recent experimental work and reproduce and extend the theoretical calculations on the pyrochlore compound, Gd2_2Ti2_2O7_7, by Raju \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev.     Gravitational Settling of ^{22}Ne in Liquid White Dwarf Interiors--Cooling and Seismological Effects

    We assess the impact of the trace element ^{22}Ne on the cooling and seismology of a liquid C/O white dwarf (WD). Due to this elements' neutron excess, it sinks towards the interior as the liquid WD cools. The subsequent gravitational energy released slows the cooling of the WD by 0.25--1.6 Gyrs by the time it has completely crystallized, depending on the WD mass and the adopted sedimentation rate. The effects will make massive WDs or those in metal rich clusters (such as NGC 6791) appear younger than their true age. Our diffusion calculations show that the ^{22}Ne mass fraction in the crystallized core actually increases outwards. The stability of this configuration has not yet been determined. In the liquid state, the settled ^{22}Ne enhances the internal buoyancy of the interior and changes the periods of the high radial order g-modes by approximately 1%. Though a small adjustment, this level of change far exceeds the accuracy of the period measurements. A full assessment and comparison of mode frequencies for specific WDs should help constrain the still uncertain ^{22}Ne diffusion coefficient for the liquid interior.Comment: 26 pages (11 text pages with 15 figures); to appear in The Astrophysical Journa

    The Thermal Memory of Reionization History

    The recent measurement by WMAP of a large electron scattering optical depth tau_e = 0.17 +- 0.04 is consistent with a simple model of reionization in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) is ionized at redshift z ~ 15, and remains highly ionized thereafter. Here, we show that existing measurements of the IGM temperature from the Lyman-alpha forest at z ~ 2 - 4 rule out this ``vanilla'' model. Under reasonable assumptions about the ionizing spectrum, as long as the universe is reionized before z = 10, and remains highly ionized thereafter, the IGM reaches an asymptotic thermal state which is too cold compared to observations. To simultaneously satisfy the CMB and forest constraints, the reionization history must be complex: reionization begins early at z >~ 15, but there must have been significant (order unity) changes in fractions of neutral hydrogen and/or helium at 6 < z < 10, and/or singly ionized helium at 4 < z < 10. We describe a physically motivated reionization model that satisfies all current observations. We also explore the impact of a stochastic reionization history and show that a late epoch of (HeII --> HeIII) reionization induces a significant scatter in the IGM temperature, but the scatter diminishes with time quickly. Finally, we provide an analytic formula for the thermal asymptote, and discuss possible additional heating mechanisms that might evade our constraints.Comment: 10 pages, submitted to ApJ, new references, additional discussion on earlier work and partial HeII reionizatio
