    Elastic and inelastic dark-field micrographs simultaneously recorded by the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) provide structural and quantitative chemical information at a spatial resolution of some nanometers. Simultaneous acquisition is essential as it warrants: (i) the geometrical identity of picture elements (pixels) in these micrographs, and (ii) the identity of recording conditions (focus, electron dose) for the elastic and inelastic images. Suitable off-line processing of such multichannel images allows the concentration of protein or nucleic acid within embedding material to be evaluated. In addition, location and number of chemical elements such as phosphorus can be determined. Theoretical sensitivity is a few phosphorus atoms in a volume of approximately 1000 nm3 (not demonstrated in this paper). Quantitative electron microscopy of this kind, however, requires the influence of mass loss as well as plural scattering to be correctly accounted for. Experimental conditions that provide a sound basis for concentration determination as well as element mapping are discussed

    Colour Reconnections in Quark and Gluon Jets in Herwig 7

    Major event generators deviate significantly in their description of quark and gluon initiated jets. The modelling of these is particularly sensitive to the colour reconnection model used in the cluster hadronization model in the event generator Herwig. However, up to now, observables sensitive to the light flavour of jets have not been widely used in the construction and tuning of event generators. The scheme used in Herwig and changes within it are investigated using observables in e +e − and pp collisions, which are expected to discriminate quark and gluon jets

    Challenging behaviour in dementia care: A novel framework for translating knowledge to practice

    This article provides guidance on the management of challenging behaviours (CBs) in dementia care, and introduces concepts from positive behavioural support not usually applied to dementia. While the use of formulations has received a lot of attention in recent years, the mechanisms of how to apply the formulation-led interventions requires more consideration. In order to assist caregivers to deliver effective interventions we need to have a better understanding of the CBs we are attempting to manage, and also produce management strategies with clearer goals. Ideally we would also want caregivers to be able to describe the skills they employ in a coherent manner in order to facilitate selfreflection and to be able to pass on their skills to junior colleagues. This paper attempts to fulfil these needs by integrating two new models with philosophies already used in dementia care. In terms of new concepts, the first is the Arousal Cycle, which gives caregivers an awareness of the five phases of a typical CB (wellbeing, trigger, escalation, CB, and recovery phase). In relation to the second, the Traffic Light analogy examines CBs in terms of four management stages: Primary prevention, secondary prevention, reactive strategies, and calming strategies. It is proposed that we distinguish between these stages when composing our formulations and care plans, and thereby produce better targeted interventions. By the end of the paper the reader will have been presented with material integrating concepts from the fields of dementia and intellectual impairment, and been introduced to new ways of managing CBs

    Corrector estimates in homogenization of a nonlinear transmission problem for diffusion equations in connected domains

    This paper is devoted to the homogenization of a nonlinear transmission problem stated in a two-phase domain. We consider a system of linear diffusion equations defined in a periodic domain consisting of two disjoint phases that are both connected sets separated by a thin interface. Depending on the field variables, at the interface, nonlinear conditions are imposed to describe interface reactions. In the variational setting of the problem, we prove the homogenization theorem and a bidomain averaged model. The periodic unfolding technique is used to obtain the residual error estimate with a first-order corrector. © 2019 The Authors.     Measuring Financial Statement Disaggregation Using XBRL

    We develop a measure of disclosure quality using disaggregation of financial statement items from the Form 10-K XBRL filing. Our measure (ITEMS) extends Chen, Miao, and Shevlin’s (2015),DQ measure and is distinct from R. Hoitash and U. Hoitash’s (2018) ARC measure. Our measure provides a simple measure of disaggregation by counting the balance sheet and income statement line items, it does not depend on the data aggregators’ collection process and is readily available shortly after the Form 10-K is filed. We validate ITEMS by showing that firm fundamentals correlate to ITEMS in the predicted direction using OLS regression. We find that ITEMS explains consequences of disclosure quality: forecast error, forecast dispersion, bid-ask spread, and cost of equity capital. Further, ITEMS has explanatory power of disclosure quality consequences incremental to DQ and ARC, and it is distinct from ARC evident from different associations with disclosure quality consequences and reporting quality

    Proof of anthocyanins in the carnivorous plant genus Nepenthes

    Yellow to red colored betalains are a chemotaxonomic feature of Caryophyllales, while in most other plant taxa, anthocyanins are responsible for these colors. The carnivorous plant family Nepenthaceae belongs to Caryophyllales; here, red‐pigmented tissues seem to attract insect prey. Strikingly, the chemical nature of red color in Nepenthes has never been elucidated. Although belonging to Caryophyllales, in Nepenthes, some molecular evidence supports the presence of anthocyanins rather than betalains. However, there was previously no direct chemical proof of this. Using ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography‐electrospray ionization‐high‐resolution mass spectrometry, we identified cyanidin glycosides in Nepenthes species and tissues. Further, we reveal the existence of a complete set of constitutively expressed anthocyanin biosynthetic genes in Nepenthes. Thus, here we finally conclude the long‐term open question regarding red pigmentation in Nepenthaceae

    In vivo efficacy of carvacrol on Campylobacter jejuni prevalence in broiler chickens during an entire fattening period

    Carvacrol, a primary constituent of plant essential oils (EOs), and its antimicrobial activity have been the subject of many in vitro studies. Due to an increasing demand for alternative antimicrobials and an emerging number of antibiotic resistant bacteria, the use of essential oils has played a major role in many recent approaches to reduce Campylobacter colonization in poultry before slaughter age. For that purpose, the reducing effect of carvacrol on Campylobacter jejuni prevalence in broilers was determined in vivo in an experimental broiler chicken model during an entire fattening period. Carvacrol was added to the feed in a concentration of 120 mg/kg feed four days post hatch until the end of the trial. In this study, we demonstrated a statistically significant decrease of C. jejuni counts by 1.17 decadic logarithm (log10) most probable number (MPN)/g in cloacal swabs during starter and grower periods (corresponding to a broilers age between 1 and 28 days). Similar results were observed for colon enumeration at the end of the trial where C. jejuni counts were significantly reduced by 1.25 log10 MPN/g. However, carvacrol did not successfully reduce Campylobacter cecal colonization in 33-day-old broilers
