    The critical power concept and bench press: Modeling 1RM and repetitions to failure

Introduction: We demonstrate application of the 3-parameter critical power (CP) model derived for cycling and running, to performance at bench press exercise. We apply the model to both performance of a single repetition maximum (1RM) and multiple repetitions (reps) to failure at different sub-maximal weights. Methods: Sixteen weight-trained young adult male participants each performed a modified YMCA 1RM test and four sets of fixed cadence reps to failure at different sub-maximal weights. The CP model equation takes the form: n = ALC/(m – CL) + ALC/(CL – Lmax,), where n is the number of reps to failure and m is the sub-maximal weight lifted (kg). ALC is the anaerobic lift capacity (kg), CL is the critical lift (the maximal continuous aerobic ability at bench pressing, kg), and Lmax is the maximal ‘instantaneous’ lift (kg). Results: The 3-parameter critical power model fits recorded reps to failure very well in almost all subjects (0.9556 \u3c R2 \u3c 0.9999), and provides estimates of the three model parameters for each individual. CL was not significantly different from zero, suggesting that the aerobic energy contribution to short duration bench press sessions is negligible. When used to estimate 1RM for each subject, the CP model produces estimates significantly greater (p \u3c 0.05) than those obtained using the YMCA procedure. Conclusion: The CP concept can be used to accurately model bench press reps to failure at different submaximal weights in a homogeneous group of individuals. Prediction of 1RM is possible, but caution should be exercised in interpreting and using the prediction

    In the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer, compounds of fluorine are evolved. The amount of fluorine occurring in the phosphate rock used each year in the United States is about 8000 tons. It is proposed to utilize this material industrially. If the tower gases are passed through the water, reaction 3 SiF4 + 3 H2O → H2Sio3 + 2 H2SiF6 takes place. The solution is treated to recover the silicon fluoride as MgSiF4. The precipitated silicic acid is filtered out, dried and has good adsorptive properties. The adsorption value depends upon the acidity and other conditions. The silica obtained has better adsorption properties than Silica Gel

    The Effect of Glucagon-Like Peptide-2 Receptor Agonists on Colonic Anastomotic Wound Healing

    Background. Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) is an intestinal specific trophic hormone, with therapeutic potential; the effects on intestinal healing are unknown. We used a rat model of colonic healing, under normoxic, and stress (hypoxic) conditions to examine the effect of GLP-2 on intestinal healing. Methods. Following colonic transection and reanastomosis, animals were randomized to one of six groups (n = 8/group): controls, native GLP-2, long-acting GLP-2 (GLP-2- MIMETIBODY, GLP-2-MMB), animals were housed under normoxic or hypoxic (11%  O2) conditions. Animals were studied five days post-operation for anastomotic strength and wound characteristics. Results. Anastomotic bursting pressure was unchanged by GLP-2 or GLP-2-MMB in normoxic or hypoxic animals; both treatments increased crypt cell proliferation. Wound IL-1β increased with GLP-2; IFNγ with GLP-2 and GLP-2-MMB. IL-10 and TGF-β were decreased; Type I collagen mRNA expression increased in hypoxic animals while Type III collagen was reduced with both GLP-2 agonists. GLP-2 MMB, but not native GLP-2 increased TIMP 1-3 mRNA levels in hypoxia. Conclusions. The effects on CCP, cytokines and wound healing were similar for both GLP-2 agonists under normoxic and hypoxic conditions; anastomotic strength was not affected. This suggests that GLP-2 (or agonists) could be safely used peri-operatively; direct studies will be required

    Transition to adult mental health services for young people with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A qualitative analysis of their experiences

    BackgroundThere is little research on the process of transition between child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and adult mental health services (AMHS). More recently, there is growing recognition that Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may persist into adulthood requiring services beyond age 18. However, despite National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidance which recommends specialist services for adults with ADHD, there is currently a lack of such services in the UK. The aim of the current study is to explore the experiences of young people with ADHD during transition from CAMHS to AMHS.MethodSemi-structured qualitative interviews with ADHD patients accessing CAMHS clinics in Nottinghamshire were analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsTen semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analysed. We found that patients’ relationships with their clinician were a key factor in both their reported experience of CAMHS and the transition process. Perceived responsibility of care was also pivotal in how the transition process was viewed. Nature and severity of problems and patients expectations of adult services were also contributing factors in the transition process. The need for continued parental support was openly accepted and thought to be required by the majority of young people with ADHD during transition.ConclusionsTimely preparation, joint working, good clinician relationships and parental support serve to facilitate the process of transition for young people with ADHD. Nature and severity of problems are perceived to impede or facilitate transition, with predominantly more ‘complex presentations’ with associated mental health problems more familiar to AMHS (e.g. self-harm, depression) making for smoother transitions to adult services. Transitions to AMHS were more difficult when ADHD was viewed as the main or sole clinical problem. Further exploration of young people’s experiences of transition and their engagement with and experience of adult services is required to provide an overall picture of facilitators to successful transition and integration into adult services
