Citizens of Character - The Values and Character Dispositions of 14-16 Year Olds in the Hodge Hill Constituency

    Get PDF
Citizens of Character explores the attitudes, dispositions, and values of 14-16 year old students in a particular urban environment - the six schools of the Hodge Hill constituency in Birmingham - and the extent to which the education system and the local environment advance or inhibit their sense of self, their values and their character development. These students constituted a heterogeneous group of religious and non-religious individuals. This project goes beyond the normal exploration and measurement of strengths of character in individuals and looks at the factors that build character in families and schools. This research has wider implications for the relationship between character and aspirations, social change, school cultures, citizenship, identity and religion. The study discusses what students understand by character. It set out to ascertain the moral values held by a group of students living in an inner-city area. The study sought to question who or what has influenced their moral values and examined which individuals, institutions and situations might have hindered or promoted their development. Some of the issues and concerns which arose - for example, relations with neighbours, the matter of local and national pride and questions of trust - may seem not to impinge upon character education as such but are relevant in a wider context

Contemporary training practices in elite british powerlifters:survey results from an international competition

The primary objective of this study was to investigate current powerlifting training methods in light of anecdotal evidence purporting increased similarity with the explosive training practices of weightlifters. The study also assessed the prevalence of contemporary training practices frequently recommended for powerlifters in the popular literature. A 20-item survey was distributed to 32 elite British powerlifters at an International competition. The subject group included multiple national, international, and commonwealth champions and record holders. Based on 2007 competition results, the average Wilks score of the group was 450.26 ± 34.7. The response rate for the surveys was 88% (28 of 32). The survey was sectioned into 6 areas of inquiry: a) repetition speed, b) explosive training load, c) resistance materials used, d) adjunct power training methods, e) exercise selection, and f) training organization. The results demonstrate that the majority of powerlifters train with the intention to explosively lift maximal and submaximal loads (79 and 82%, respectively). Results revealed that 39% of the lifters regularly used elastic bands and that 57% incorporated chains in their training. Evidence for convergence of training practices between powerlifters and weightlifters was found when 69% of the subjects reported using the Olympic lifts or their derivatives as part of their powerlifting training. Collectively, the results demonstrate that previous notions of how powerlifters train are outdated. Contemporary powerlifters incorporate a variety of training practices that are focused on developing both explosive and maximal strength

Cross Transfer Effects of Isometric Strength Measurement Schedules

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of isometric strength testing of the wrist palmar flexion muscles on the strength of the contralateral muscle group in male high school students. Twenty-two male high school students enrolled at the Oakley High School served as subjects for this investigation. Subjects were chosen who could meet with the investigator on five successive days and then, after a two day rest, meet with the investigator for another five consecutive days. These were students who could comply with the requirements of the investigation. The measurement instrument, a cable-tensiometer, was incorporated into the testing equipment enabling a cable to pass through it and at a ninety degree angle to the forearm of the subject being tested. The subjects were given a one minute rest between each of the five trials on each of the days. Group A was instructed to pull with the right wrist palmar flexion muscle group the first week and then the second week to change to the left wrist. Group “B was instructed to pull with the left wrist palmar flexion muscle group the first week and then to change to the right for the next week of testing. Subjects were measured near the same time each day. The treatments by subject’s design of analysis found group B to exhibit significant differences in daily mean strength measures. T-tests found days four and five significantly greater than day one, and day five significantly greater than day two in the analysis of the left hand. T-tests run on the right hand found days three, four, and five significantly greater than day one, and day five significantly greater than day two. The comparison of daily mean scores of the right wrists of group “A” and group B show decidedly higher mean scores for group IIB , which was tested the second week. On the basis of the data and within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions seem warranted: 1. In group “B , left hand, there were significant increases between day one and days four and five and, also, between day two and day five. 2. In group “B , right hand, there were significant increases between day one and days three, four and five and, also, between day two and day five. 3. The significant daily increases might be attributed to strength development, learning, or a combination of strength development and learning

Matching of a horn antenna to its dense surrounding media by the use of artificial dielectric methods

    Get PDF
The purpose of this thesis is to design an artificial dielectric slug to match a horn in a media such as water and to discuss a method of determining experimentally its dielectric properties. The design is based on known artificial dielectric methods. The method of determining the dielectric properties is by microwave waveguide reflection techniques. This thesis deals with the theoretical aspects and suggests an experimental method of determining the practicability of such a matching method --Abstract, page ii

Graduates of Character - Values and Character: Higher Education and Graduate Employment

    Get PDF
Graduates of Character is the product of an empirical enquiry into the values, virtues, dispositions and attitudes of a sample of students and employees who volunteered to be involved. The research team sought host sites which would offer a diverse set of interviewees in gender, ethnicity, religion and aspiration. In this study we discuss what character is taken to mean by students and employees in their years of higher education and employment. We examine what their values are, what they gain from the university, what they believe employers look for when recruiting, what they hope to give to an employer, and what they expect from their employer. We then explore who or what influenced their values and moral development. We also examined the role of the personal tutor or mentor, and the persons or services to which they might go for personal and/or professional support
