Nuclear Cusps and Cores in Early-type Galaxies As Relics of Binary Black Hole Mergers
We present an analysis of the central cusp slopes and core parameters of
early-type galaxies using a large database of surface brightness profiles
obtained from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We examine the relation
between the central cusp slopes, core parameters, and black hole masses in
early-type galaxies, in light of two models that attempt to explain the
formation of cores and density cusps via the dynamical influence of black
holes. Contrary to the expectations from adiabatic-growth models, we find that
the cusp slopes do not steepen with increasing black hole mass fraction.
Moreover, a comparison of kinematic black hole mass measurements with the
masses predicted by the adiabatic models shows that they overpredict the masses
by a factor of approximately 3. Simulations involving binary black hole mergers
predict that both the size of the core and the central mass deficit correlate
with the final black hole mass. These relations are qualitatively supported by

Magellan Spectroscopy of the Galaxy Cluster RX J1347.5-1145: Redshift Estimates for the Gravitationally Lensed Arcs
We present imaging and spectroscopic observations of the gravitationally
lensed arcs in the field of RX J1347.5-1145, the most X-ray luminous galaxy
cluster known. Based on the detection of the [OII] 3727 emission line, we
confirm that the redshift of one of the arcs is z = 0.806. Its color and [OII]
line strength are consistent with those of distant, actively star forming
galaxies. In a second arc, we tentatively identify a pair of absorption lines
superposed on a red continuum; the lines are consistent with Ca II H & K at z =
0.785. We detected a faint blue continuum in two additional arcs, but no
spectral line features could be measured. We establish lower limits to their
redshifts based on the absence of [OII] emission, which we argue should be
present and detectable in these objects. Redshifts are also given for a number

Analysis of Profitability of Commercial Dog Breeding Ventures in Thrissur and Ernakulam Districts of Kerala
Kerala's commercial dog breeding enterprise is a promising one with the potential to reduceyouth unemployment and provide a livelihood. However, the state lacks authentic information on factors affecting profitability of commercial dog breeding business. The present study was conducted to identify the association between factors that affect profitability of commercial dog breeding in Kerala. The study was conducted using an ex-post facto research design on 60 commercial dog breeding units selected randomly from Thrissur and Ernakulam districts of Kerala.Data collection was done using a pretested-structured interview schedule. Study revealed that years of experience, number of dogs reared, number of puppies born, cost of veterinary care, level of adoption and labour cost were correlated with profitability of commercial dog breeding enterprise
The Rest-Frame UV Luminosity Density of Star-Forming Galaxies at Redshifts z>3.5
We have measured the rest--frame lambda~1500 Ang comoving specific luminosity
density of star--forming galaxies at redshift 3.5<z<6.5 from deep images taken
with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)and the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS),
obtained as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). We
used color selection criteria to construct samples of star--forming galaxies at
redshifts z~4, 5 and 6, identified by the signature of the 912 Ang Lyman
continuum discontinuity and Lyman-alpha forest blanketing in their rest--frame
UV colors (Lyman--break galaxies). The ACS samples cover ~0.09 square degree,
and are also relatively deep, reaching between 0.2 and 0.5 L_3^*, depending on
the redshift, where is the characteristic UV luminosity of Lyman--break
galaxies at z~3. The specific luminosity density of Lyman--break galaxies
appears to be nearly constant with redshift from z~3 to z~6, although the
measure at z~6 remains relatively uncertain, because it depends on the accurate
estimate of the faint counts of the z~6 sample. If Lyman--break galaxies are
fair tracers of the cosmic star formation activity, our results suggest that at
z~6 the universe was already producing stars as vigorously as it did near its
maximum several Gyr later, at 1<~z<~3. Thus, the onset of large--scale star
formation in the universe is to be sought at around z~6 or higher, namely at

OBJECT ORIENTED CLASSIFICATION AND FEATURE EXTRACTION FOR PARTS OF EAST DELHI USING HYBRID APPROACH
Rapid urbanization of Indian cities requires a focused attention with respect to preparation of Master Plans of cities. Urban land use/land cover from very high resolution satellite data sets is an important input for the preparation of the master plans of the cities along with extraction of transportation network, infrastructure details etc. Conventional classifiers, which are pixel based do not yield reasonably accurate urban land use/land cover classification of very high resolution satellite data (usually merged images of Panchromatic & Multispectral). Object Based Image Classification techniques are being used to generate urban land use maps with ease which is GIS compatible while using very high resolution satellite data sets. In this study, Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) has been used to create broad level urban Land Use / Land Cover (LU/LC) map using high resolution ResourceSat-2 LISS-4 and Cartosat-1 pan-sharpened image on the study area covering parts of East Delhi City. Spectral indices, geometric parameters and statistical textural methods were used to create algorithms and rule sets for feature classification. A LU/LC map of the study area comprising of 4 major LU/LC classes with its main focus on separation of barren areas from built up areas has been attempted. The overall accuracy of the result obtained is estimated to be approximately 70%
Lyman Break Galaxies Under a Microscope: The Small Scale Dynamics and Mass of an Arc in the Cluster 1E0657-56
Using the near-infrared integral-field spectrograph SPIFFI on the VLT, we
have studied the spatially-resolved dynamics in the z=3.2 strongly lensed
galaxy 1E0657-56 ``arc+core''. The lensing configuration suggests that the high
surface brightness ``core'' is the M=20 magnified central 1 kpc of the galaxy
(seen at a spatial resolution of about 200 pc in the source plane), whereas the
fainter ``arc'' is a more strongly magnified peripheral region of the same
galaxy at about a half-light radius, which otherwise appears to be a typical
z=3 Lyman break galaxy.
The overall shape of the position-velocity diagram resembles the ``rotation
curves'' of the inner few kpcs of nearby L* spiral galaxies. The projected
velocities rise rapidly to 75 km/s within the core. This implies a dynamical
mass of M_dyn = 10^9.3 M_sun within the central kpc, and suggests that in this
system the equivalent of the mass of a present-day L* bulge at the same radius
was already in place by z>=3. Approximating the circular velocity of the halo
by the measured asymptotic velocity of the rotation curve, we estimate a dark
matter halo mass of M_halo = 10^11.7 +/- 0.3, in good agreement with
large-scale clustering studies of Lyman break galaxies. The baryonic collapse
fraction is low compared to actively star-forming ``BX'' and low-redshift
galaxies around z=2, perhaps implying comparatively less gas infall to small
radii or efficient feedback. Even more speculatively, the high central mass
density might indicate highly dissipative gas collapse in very early stages of
galaxy evolution, in approximate agreement with what is expected for
``inside-out'' galaxy formation models.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Rat brain thioltransferase: regional distribution, immunological characterization, and localization by fluorescent in situ hybridization
Thioltransferase (TTase) is a member of the family of thiol-disulfide oxidoreductases that are involved in the maintenance of sulfhydryl homeostasis in cells by catalyzing thiol-disulfide interchange reactions. One of the major consequences of oxidative stress in brain is the formation of protein-glutathione mixed disulfides (through oxidation of protein thiols), which can be reversed by TTase during the recovery of brain from oxidative stress. We therefore examined the presence of TTase in brain regions from rat. In the rat, TTase activity in the whole brain was comparable with the corresponding activity in liver, but significantly higher in hippocampus. The enzyme activity was significantly lower in striatum and cerebellum compared with activity in whole brain. Rat brain TTase shared immunological similarity with the human red blood cell enzyme, but not with the pig liver enzyme. The constitutive expression of the mRNA to TTase was demonstrable by northern blotting. Localization of the TTase mRNA in rat brain by fluorescent in situ hybridization showed the presence of high amounts of mRNA in the olfactory bulb, cortex, and hippocampus and its predominant localization in the neurons. TTase mRNA was also present in Purkinje cells in the cerebellum, in giant reticular neurons in the midbrain, and in the striatal and thalamic neurons. This study demonstrates the constitutive presence of a functional TTase system in brain and delineates the regional and cellular localization of the enzyme in rat brain
The Bursty Star Formation Histories of Low-mass Galaxies at Revealed by Star Formation Rates Measured from H and FUV
We investigate the burstiness of star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies
at by using the ratio of star formation rates (SFRs) measured from
H and FUV (1500 \AA) (H--to--FUV ratio). Our sample contains 164
galaxies down to stellar mass (M*) of in the CANDELS GOODS-N
region, where Team Keck Redshift Survey DEIMOS spectroscopy and HST/WFC3 F275W
images from CANDELS and Hubble Deep UV Legacy Survey are available. When the
{\it ratio} of H- and FUV-derived SFRs is measured, dust extinction
correction is negligible (except for very dusty galaxies) with the Calzetti
attenuation curve. The H--to--FUV ratio of our sample increases with M*
and SFR. The median ratio is 0.7 at M* (or SFR) and increases to 1 at M* (or SFR
). At M*, our median H--to--FUV
ratio is lower than that of local galaxies at the same M*, implying a redshift
evolution. Bursty SFH on a timescale of a few tens of megayears on galactic
scales provides a plausible explanation of our results, and the importance of
the burstiness increases as M* decreases. Due to sample selection effects, our
H--to--FUV ratio may be an upper limit of the true value of a complete
sample, which strengthens our conclusions. Other models, e.g., non-universal
initial mass function or stochastic star formation on star cluster scales, are
