Atomic coherence and interference phenomena in resonant nonlinear optical interactions
Interference effects in quantum transitions, giving rise to amplification
without inversion, optical transparency and to enhancements in nonlinear
optical frequency conversions are considered. Review of the relevant early
theoretical and experimental results is given. The role of relaxation
processes, spontaneous cascade of polarizations, local field effects,
Doppler-broadening, as well as specific features of the interference in the
spectral continuum are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 13 eps figures, review paper, Proceedings of the 15th

Accuracy of one-dimensional collision integral in the rigid spheres approximation
The accuracy of calculation of spectral line shapes in one-dimensional
approximation is studied analytically in several limiting cases for arbitrary
collision kernel and numerically in the rigid spheres model. It is shown that
the deviation of the line profile is maximal in the center of the line in case
of large perturber mass and intermediate values of collision frequency. For
moderate masses of buffer molecules the error of one-dimensional approximation
is found not to exceed 5%.Comment: LaTeX, 24 pages, 8 figure
Hyperbolic Volterra equations of convolution type in Sobolev spaces
We study the correct solvability of an abstract integro-differential
equations in Hilbert space generalizing integro-differential equations arising
in the theory of viscoelastisity. The equations under considerations are the
abstract hyperbolic equations perturbed by the terms containing Volterra
integral operators. We establish the correct solvability in the weighted
Sobolev spaces of vector-valued functions on the positive semiaxis
Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in optically thick media
Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation is a sensitive technique for measuring
magnetic fields. Here, the shot-noise-limited magnetometric sensitivity is
analyzed for the case of optically-thick media and high light power, which has
been the subject of recent experimental and theoretical investigations.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
New access to very weak interactions in molecules
It is predicted that nuclear spin conversion in molecules can be efficiently
controlled by strong laser radiation resonant to rovibrational molecular
transition. The phenomenon can be used for substantial enrichment of spin
isomers, or for detection of very weak (10-100 Hz) interactions in molecules.Comment: REVTEX, 11 pages + 4 eps figure
