Rock Art Tallies: Mathematics on Stone in Western North America

    Get PDF
Western North America abounds with rock art sites. From Alberta to New Mexico and from Minnesota to California one can find the enigmatic rock paintings and rock carvings left by the pre-Columbian inhabitants. The images left behind on the rocks of the American plains and deserts are those of humanoids and animals, arrows and spears, and a variety of geometric shapes and abstract designs. Also included, in great numbers, are sequences of repeated shapes and marks that scholars have termed tallies. The tallies are presumed to be an ancient accounting of something or some things. This article examines rock art tallies as instances of ancient mathematical thought

The Role Of Social Support In The Return Of Internally Displaced Persons In A Post Conflict Context: An Experience Of Sri Lankan Muslims

A 30-year local armed conflict in Sri Lanka between government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) displaced at least 500,000 people. When the conflict was at its height, about 72, 000 Muslims from the North of the country were forcibly displaced by the LTTE in 1990s. These Muslims since lived outside their places of origin as internally displaced persons (IDPs). The armed conflict came to an end in 2009 after government defeated the LTTE. In this post-conflict context, many of these Muslim IDPs returned home to renew their life in their places of origin. The general objectives of his study were: i) to examine the problems of displaced Muslims and support they sought to rebuild their life in their areas of origin, ii) to categorize social support needed for them, and iii) propose a social support intervention model to address their problems. This was a qualitative study. Data were collected from 20 in-depth interview participants (IDIPs), three focus groups (FGs) and eight key informants (KIs), who were recruited by purposive sampling. Face to face interviews with semi-structured questions were conducted. Data were analyzed manually. The findings showed that in rebuilding life in their places of origin, Muslim IDPs faced several problems: Physical security, illegal property occupation, livelihood, housing, water, sanitation, healthcare, education and infrastructure. IDPs sought an instrumental and informational support to continue their life. The study proposed a social support intervention model to address their problems to rebuild life in their areas

Assessment Of Ground Deformations Using Insar Techniques And Shallow Subsurface Imaging In Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

    Get PDF
Ground deformation presents a significant threat to people's lives and properties in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. It usually occurs when there is continuous heavy rainfall. Previous methods on this hazard were based on simulation, modelling, and geo-engineering issues. Still, none of them quantified the movements using the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique. In this research, a combination of InSAR and geophysical techniques is introduced to assess the potential hazard zones and the possible causes in Pulau Pinang. This region was chosen for this research as it has high reflectivity and ground displacement potential. Permanent Scatterer- InSAR (PS-InSAR) and Small Baseline Subset- InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) techniques were used to monitor, quantify, and map the region’s deformations. Sixty ascending and fifty-six descending Sentinel-1A (S-1A) datasets obtained between 2016 and 2019 and nineteen descending ENVISAT ASAR acquired from 2003 to 2010 were processed and analysed. Electrical Resistivity (ER) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys were conducted at some selected sites based on InSAR deformation maps' results

AbstractSituated evaluative practices in pedagogical workThe new Danish Day Care Act specifies that the learning environment in daycare settings must be qualified and evaluated continuously by the pedagogues and with the involvement of children’s perspectives (Day Care Act 2018, Section 9). This implies the need for new knowledge about how we involve children’s perspectives in the evaluation and development of pedagogical practice. This article seeks to show how the pedagogues with the involvement of children’s perspectives develop the learning environment in a daycare setting. With the empirical term, situated evaluative practices the article proposes that pedagogical practice is evaluative in itself due to its inherent pedagogical intentionality. Inspired by Max van Manen’s “Phenomenology of Practice” (2007) and his concepts of pedagogical moment (2012) and pedagogical tact (1991), the purpose of the article is to, 1) describe and discuss pedagogical intentionality as a pedagogical situated and evaluative phenomenon, 2) to discuss why pedagogue’s intentionality should be recognized as an important part of pedagogue’s daily evaluation practice. The article thus seeks to contribute with new perspectives regarding the development of the new culture of evaluation, which Danish daycares currently are developing
