Management of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia with Sever COVID 19: A Case Report
Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is a pandemic viral disease that can cause devastating complications such as acute respiratory disease, especially in patients with comorbidities. We do not know yet full pictures of this disease, especially in hematological malignancies. Here, we present management of a 57-year-old male with chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia, tested positive for COVID-19, then complicated with acute respiratory distress syndrome
Effect of Feeding Propolis on Growth Performance of Broilers
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of propolis on broiler performance, carcass characteristics and blood parameters. The experiment was carried out with a completely randomized design of 4 treatments, supplemented with propolis at the rate of 0, 1, 2, and 3 mg/kg diet for 6 weeks. The results indicated that birds diet supplementation with propolis increased body weight (P<0.05), decreased feed intake and improved feed efficiency during the experiment. Carcass traits did not show significant differences for the treatments, with the exception of dressing percentage. The serum total protein and globulins were significantly (P<0.05) increased and the serum cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly (P<0.05) decreased in propolis supplemented broilers. No significant differences were observed in hematological parameters among the different groups. It could be concluded that dietary inclusion of propolis to poultry diets had a positive effect on growth performance and improved the immune response by elevating blood globulins level. Also, it decreases blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Relationship between Perceived Stress, Psychological Wellbeing and Emotional Competence among Baccalaureate Nursing Students: an Egyptian Sample
Nursing education is acknowledged as one of the stressful and emotionally demanding profession. Stress among nursing students is an inevitable issue that might lead to poor psychological wellbeing. Having a good emotional competence helps university nursing students to decrease their stressand enhance their psychological well-being. Aim: this study was aimed to determine the relationship between the perceived stress, psychological wellbeing and emotional competence among baccalaureate nursing students. Design: A descriptive correlational research design was used in this study. Baccalaureate nursing students who were enrolled at Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health coursewere the study subjects. Their number amounted 135 students. Four tools were used namely; Bio-socio demographic data structured interview schedule, Ryff’s Psychological Wellbeing (RPWB) scale, The Emotional Skills/Competence questionnaire and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).Results:A positive significant relation between the students’ psychological well-being and their Emotional competence was noted and there was a negative significant correlation between them and students’ perceived stress. It can be concluded that nursing students have high level of stress and their emotional skills/competence in addition to their psychological well-being can help them to decrease their level of stress. Implementation of emotional hygiene program, to teach the nursing students to care for their own emotions and didn’t leave them injured or untreated is recommended. Key words: Stress, Psychological well-being. Emotional competence, Nursing students. DOI: 10.7176/JHMN/68-09 Publication date: November 30th 201
Hypogonadism in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: relationship with airflow limitation, muscle weakness and systemic inflammation
AbstractObjectivesTo determine the prevalence of hypogonadism in male patients with Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), and to study its impact on skeletal muscle dysfunction and assess the effect of systemic markers of inflammation on testosterone level and muscle function. The study included 50 stable male COPD patients and 30 controls.MethodsBoth groups were subjected to the following measurements; inflammatory markers levels (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and interleukin – 6 (IL-6)), sex hormones including; serum total (T) and free testosterone (FT), sex hormone binding globulins (SHBG), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and 17β estradiol levels (E2), the exercise capacity (6-minute walk distance (6MWT)) and quadriceps muscle force (One repetition maximum (1RM) and EMG). COPD patients underwent spirometry.ResultsThere was a higher prevalence of hypogonadism in COPD patients than the controls (62% versus 17%). There was a significant negative correlation between serum testosterone levels (T and FT) and the severity of airway obstruction. Quadriceps muscle force and the exercise capacity were significantly lower in COPD patients than controls but they showed no correlation with the testosterone level. Inflammatory markers were significantly higher in COPD patients compared to controls and showed a significant correlation with the severity of airflow obstruction. The higher inflammatory markers levels were related to more muscle weakness as hs-CRP was inversely correlated with the quadriceps strength and exercise capacity, while IL-6 was inversely correlated to quadriceps strength only.ConclusionHypogonadism is highly prevalent in clinically stable COPD patients and is particularly related to the severity of the airway obstruction. Systemic inflammation is present in stable COPD patients and its intensity is related to the severity of the underlying disease and it predisposes to skeletal muscle weakness and exercise intolerance. However, we failed to find a significant association between hypogonadism and muscle weakness or systemic inflammation
Comparative study of different incision types in inguinal lymphadenectomy: retrospective study
Background: Inguinal lymphadenectomy has always been associated with a high complication rate, mostly related to wound healing.
Objectives: We aimed at evaluating the skin excision vertical incision in lowering wound complication rate following inguinal lymphadenectomy.
Patients and Methods: Patients underwent inguinal lymphadenectomy for malignant nodal metastasis at the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, Egypt in the period from January 2017 to December 2020. According to the incision type, we divided them into three groups: Group 1: vertical with vertical skin ellipse (~4cm) excision. Group 2: vertical S-shaped without skin excision.Group 3: transverse incision. We compared the short-term outcome among these groups.
Results: Seventy-eight patients included, 27 (34.6%) G1, 27 (34.6% G2), and 24 (30.8%) G3. Complications occurred in a total of 20 cases (25.6% ). Its rate was highest in G3 (37.5% of cases) and least in G1 (14.8%). Flap necrosis was a common serious complication. It least occurred in the G1 Group and most in the G3 Group. No statistical difference was noticed regarding the median operation time, postoperative hospital stay, and median duration before drain removal. Capsular rupture did not occur in G1 patients, occurred only in one case of G2 (3.7%) and 2 cases of G3 ( 8.3%). Despite being statistically insignificant it is very significant oncologically.
Conclusions: Vertical elliptical skin wedge excision in inguinal lymphadenectomy provides better surgical field exposure. It avoids direct handling of the tumor; thus is more safe oncologically. It has the least flap necrosis rate among other incision types
The impact of alternative window glazing types and a shading system on the daylighting of hospital patient rooms: simulation analysis under a desert clear sky
This paper aimed at identifying the most effective glazing type that suits different patient room layouts under desert clear skies. Year-round daylighting performance of three glazing types was compared with that of a 45 degree sun breaker for three different patient room layouts. Simulations were conducted for rooms facing south in Cairo, Egypt. The daylighting performance of the tested glazing types was less than that of a sun breaker. Electrochromic-60 and lowE glazing were successful in the outboard bathroom design only, for large window sizes. The electrochromic-30 glass did not produce acceptable results in any of the tested cases
C-Abl inhibition; a novel therapeutic target for Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the most prevalent movement disorder in the world. The major
pathological hallmarks of PD are death of dopaminergic neurons and the formation of Lewy bodies.
At the moment, there is no cure for PD; current treatments are symptomatic. Investigators are searching
for neuroprotective agents and disease modifying strategies to slow the progress of PD. However,
recently, due to the ignorance of the main pathological sequence of PD, many drug targets failed to
provide neuroprotective effects in human trials. Currently, a huge amount of evidence suggests the involvement
of C-Abelson (c-Abl) tyrosine kinase enzyme in the pathology of PD. C-abl plays a role in
PD pathology on the levels of parkin activation, alpha synuclein aggregation, and impaired autophagy
of toxic elements. Experimental studies showed that (1) c-abl activation is involved in neuronal death
and (2) c-abl inhibition shows neuroprotective effects and prevents dopaminergic neurons’ death. Current
evidence from experimental studies and the first in-human trial shows that c-abl inhibition holds
the promise for neuroprotection against PD and therefore, justifies the movement towards larger clinical
trials. In this review article, we discussed the role of c-abl in PD pathology and the findings of preclinical
experiments and the first in-human trial. In addition, based on the lessons of the last decade
and current preclinical evidence, we provide recommendations for future research in this area
Chitosan edible coating: a potential control of toxic biogenic amines and enhancing the quality and shelf life of chilled tuna filets
Edible films and coatings offer great potential to support sustainable food production by lowering packaging waste, extending product shelf life, and actively preserving food quality. Using edible coatings containing plant extracts with antioxidant and antibacterial characteristics could help to enhance the quality and shelf life of fish products. In this study, the combination effect of chitosan with beetroot, curcumin, and garlic extracts on biogenic amines (BAs) reduction, biochemical quality [pH, thiobarbituric acid index (TBA), trimethylamine (TMA), and total volatile base (TVB)], shelf life and sensory characteristics of tuna filets was investigated over 14 days of refrigerated storage compared to control (uncoated) samples. The results showed that the coated samples experienced a lower increase in BAs levels than the control samples. Among the treated samples, chitosan incorporated with curcumin (CH-C) showed the highest reduction in BAs formation (1.45 – 19.33, 0.81 – 4.45, and 1.04 – 8.14 mg/kg), followed by chitosan with garlic (CH-G) (1.54 – 21.74, 0.83 – 5.77, and 1.08 – 8.84 mg/kg), chitosan with beetroot extract (CH-B) (1.56 – 31.70, 0.84 – 6.79, and 1.07 – 10.82 mg/kg), and chitosan without extract addition (CH) (1.62 – 33.83, 0.71 – 7.82 and 1.12 – 12.66 mg/kg) compared to control samples (1.62 – 59.45, 0.80 – 11.96, and 1.14 – 20.34 mg/kg) for histamine, cadaverine, and putrescine, respectively. In addition, the rate of increase in pH, TBA, TMA, and TVB of all coated treatments was lower than in the control samples. Sensory evaluation results revealed that chitosan-treated samples incorporated with beetroot, garlic, and curcumin extracts showed good quality and acceptability characteristics. Overall, chitosan edible coatings incorporated with beetroot, garlic, and curcumin extracts reduced the formation of biogenic amine, delayed biochemical deterioration, and extended the shelf life of tuna filets. Among the treated samples, CH-C demonstrated a remarkable superiority in all the studied parameters. Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy for the incorporation of active compounds in edible coatings to improve the quality and safety of foods during storage
