    Essays on the impact of income on family and child well-being

    In this dissertation I offer three independent studies that each contribute to the literature on the impact of income on family and child well-being. I present three essays that investigate three different contexts and sources of income variation. First, I investigate the extent to which an unconditional cash transfer to families in Germany that is intended to benefit children actually translates into an improvement in the circumstances related to child well-being. Next, I analyze how shocks to mothers’ earnings impact their demand for health inputs during pregnancy, and how this affects the health of the newborn child. The fourth chapter focuses on a non-cash transfer program. I investigate whether families who are receiving food stamp benefits may be disadvantaged compared to higher income families due to the fact that those families who receive food stamps necessarily incur a time cost of food preparation when using food stamps to purchase food

    Economic Well-being and Anti-Semitic, Xenophobic, and Racist Attitudes in Germany

    The fear and hatred of others who are different has economic consequences because such feelings are likely to translate into discrimination in labor, credit, housing, and other markets. The implications range from earnings inequality to intergenerational mobility. Using German data from various years between 1996 and 2010, we analyze the determinants of racist and xenophobic feelings towards foreigners in general, and against specific groups such as Italians and Turks. We also analyze racist and anti-Semitic feelings towards German citizens who differ in ethnicity (Aussiedler from Eastern Europe) or in religion (German Jews). Individuals' perceived (or actual) economic well-being is negatively related to the strength of these feelings. Education, and having contact with foreigners mitigate racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic feelings. People who live in states which had provided above-median support of the Nazi party in the 1928 elections have stronger anti-Semitic feelings today. The results are not gender-driven. They are not an artifact of economic conditions triggering feelings about job priority for German males, and they are not fully driven by fears about foreigners taking away jobs. The results of the paper are consistent with the model of Glaeser (2005) on hate, and with that of Akerlof and Kranton (2000, 2005) on identity in the utility function

    Geochemical studies of impact breccias and country rocks from the El'gygytgyn impact structure, Russia

    The complex impact structure El'gygytgyn (age 3.6 Ma, diameter 18 km) in northeastern Russia was formed in ~88 Ma old volcanic target rocks of the Ochotsk-Chukotsky Volcanic Belt (OCVB). In 2009, El'gygytgyn was the target of a drilling project of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), and in summer 2011 it was investigated further by a Russian–German expedition. Drill core material and surface samples, including volcanic target rocks and impactites, have been investigated by various geochemical techniques in order to improve the record of trace element characteristics for these lithologies and to attempt to detect and constrain a possible meteoritic component. The bedrock units of the ICDP drill core reflect the felsic volcanics that are predominant in the crater vicinity. The overlying suevites comprise a mixture of all currently known target lithologies, dominated by felsic rocks but lacking a discernable meteoritic component based on platinum group element abundances. The reworked suevite, directly overlain by lake sediments, is not only comparatively enriched in shocked minerals and impact glass spherules, but also contains the highest concentrations of Os, Ir, Ru, and Rh compared to other El'gygytgyn impactites. This is—to a lesser extent—the result of admixture of a mafic component, but more likely the signature of a chondritic meteoritic component. However, the highly siderophile element contribution from target material akin to the mafic blocks of the ICDP drill core to the impactites remains poorly constrained

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>With greater technological developments in the care of musculoskeletal patients, we are entering an era of rapid change in our understanding of the pathophysiology of traumatic injury; assessment and treatment of polytrauma and related disorders; and treatment outcomes. In developed countries, it is very likely that we will have algorithms for the approach to many musculoskeletal disorders as we strive for the best approach with which to evaluate treatment success. This debate article is founded on predictions of future health care needs that are solely based on the subjective inputs and opinions of the world's leading orthopedic surgeons.</p> <p>Hence, it functions more as a forum-based rather than a scientific-based presentation. This exposé was designed to stimulate debate about the emerging patients' needs in the future predicted by leading orthopedic surgeons that provide some hint as to the right direction for orthopedic care and outlines the important topics in this area.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The authors aim to provide a general overview of orthopedic care in a typical developed country setting. However, the regional diversity of the United States and every other industrialized nation should be considered as a cofactor that may vary to some extent from our vision of improved orthopedic and trauma care of the musculoskeletal patient on an interregional level.</p> <p>In this forum, we will define the current and future barriers in developed countries related to musculoskeletal trauma, total joint arthroplasty, patient safety and injuries related to military conflicts, all problems that will only increase as populations age, become more mobile, and deal with political crisis.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>It is very likely that the future will bring a more biological approach to fracture care with less invasive surgical procedures, flexible implants, and more rapid rehabilitation methods. This international consortium challenges the trauma and implants community to develop outcome registries that are managed through health care offices and to prepare effectively for the many future challenges that lie in store for those who treat musculoskeletal conditions.</p

    Comparison of Several Methods for Determining the Internal Resistance of Lithium Ion Cells

    The internal resistance is the key parameter for determining power, energy efficiency and lost heat of a lithium ion cell. Precise knowledge of this value is vital for designing battery systems for automotive applications. Internal resistance of a cell was determined by current step methods, AC (alternating current) methods, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and thermal loss methods. The outcomes of these measurements have been compared with each other. If charge or discharge of the cell is limited, current step methods provide the same results as energy loss methods

    Few-cycle laser driven reaction nanoscopy on aerosolized silica nanoparticles

    Nanoparticles offer unique properties as photocatalysts with large surface areas. Under irradiation with light, the associated near-fields can induce, enhance, and control molecular adsorbate reactions on the nanoscale. So far, however, there is no simple method available to spatially resolve the near-field induced reaction yield on the surface of nanoparticles. Here we close this gap by introducing reaction nanoscopy based on three-dimensional momentum-resolved photoionization. The technique is demonstrated for the spatially selective proton generation in few-cycle laser-induced dissociative ionization of ethanol and water on SiO2 nanoparticles, resolving a pronounced variation across the particle surface. The results are modeled and reproduced qualitatively by electrostatic and quasi-classical mean-field Mie Monte-Carlo ((MC)-C-3) calculations. Reaction nanoscopy is suited for a wide range of isolated nanosystems and can provide spatially resolved ultrafast reaction dynamics on nanoparticles, clusters, and droplets

    Neurogenic substance P—influences on action potential production in afferent neurons of the kidney?

    We recently showed that a substance P (SP)–dependent sympatho-inhibitory mechanism via afferent renal nerves is impaired in mesangioproliferative nephritis. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that SP released from renal afferents inhibits the action potential (AP) production in their dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Cultured DRG neurons (Th11-L2) were investigated in current clamp mode to assess AP generation during both TRPV1 stimulation by protons (pH 6) and current injections with and without exposure to SP (0.5 ”mol) or CGRP (0.5 ”mol). Neurons were classified as tonic (sustained AP generation) or phasic (≀ 4 APs) upon current injection; voltage clamp experiments were performed for the investigation of TRPV1-mediated inward currents due to proton stimulation. Superfusion of renal neurons with protons and SP increased the number of action potentials in tonic neurons (9.6 ± 5 APs/10 s vs. 16.9 ± 6.1 APs/10 s, P < 0.05, mean ± SD, n = 7), while current injections with SP decreased it (15.2 ± 6 APs/600 ms vs. 10.2 ± 8 APs/600 ms, P < 0.05, mean ± SD, n = 29). Addition of SP significantly reduced acid-induced TRPV1-mediated currents in renal tonic neurons (− 518 ± 743 pA due to pH 6 superfusion vs. − 82 ± 50 pA due to pH 6 with SP superfusion). In conclusion, SP increased action potential production via a TRPV1-dependent mechanism in acid-sensitive renal neurons. On the other hand, current injection in the presence of SP led to decreased action potential production. Thus, the peptide SP modulates signaling pathways in renal neurons in an unexpected manner leading to both stimulation and inhibition of renal neuronal activity in different (e.g., acidic) environmental contexts
