    Oscillating magnetoresistance due to fragile spin structure in metallic GdPd3_3

    Studies on the phenomenon of magnetoresistance (MR) have produced intriguing and application-oriented outcomes for decades--colossal MR, giant MR and recently discovered extremely large MR of millions of percents in semimetals can be taken as examples. We report here the investigation of oscillating MR in a cubic intermetallic compound GdPd3_3, which is the only compound that exhibits MR oscillations between positive and negative values. Our study shows that a very strong correlation between magnetic, electrical and magnetotransport properties is present in this compound. The magnetic structure in GdPd3_3 is highly fragile since applied magnetic fields of moderate strength significantly alter the spin arrangement within the system--a behavior that manifests itself in the oscillating MR. Intriguing magnetotransport characteristics of GdPd3_3 are appealing for field-sensitive device applications, especially if the MR oscillation could materialize at higher temperature by manipulating the magnetic interaction through perturbations caused by chemical substitutions.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures.     Ferromagnetically correlated clusters in semi-metallic Ru2NbAl Heusler alloy

    In this work, we report the structural, magnetic and electrical and thermal transport properties of the Heusler-type alloy Ru2NbAl. From the detailed analysis of magnetization data, we infer the presence of superparamagnetically interacting clusters with a Pauli paramagnetic background, while short-range ferromagnetic interaction is developed among the clusters below 5 K. The presence of this ferromagnetic interaction is confirmed through heat capacity measurements. The relatively small value of electronic contribution to specific heat, gamma (~2.7 mJ/mol-K2), as well as the linear nature of temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient indicate a semi-metallic ground state with a pseudo-gap that is also supported by our electronic structure calculations. The activated nature of resistivity is reflected in the observed negative temperature coefficient and has its origin in the charge carrier localization due to antisite defects, inferred from magnetic measurements as well as structural analysis. Although the absolute value of thermoelectric figure of merit is rather low (ZT = 5.2*10-3) in Ru2NbAl, it is the largest among all the reported non-doped full Heusler alloys.Comment: 25 pages, 14 figure

    Mainstreaming the adaptations and reducing the vulnerability of the poor due to climate change

    Many rural poor people in developing countries depend on agriculture and are highly influenced by climatic change. Hence, sustainable livelihood approaches are used at both policy and project level to initiate new poverty reduction activities and modify existing activities to improve livelihood incomes. Practices relevant to climate change adaptation around the world are wideranging and include development of technology, management, infrastructure, livestock, groundwater, and knowledge. Both structural interventions (such as building flood embankments, dikes, or seawalls or enhancing the natural setting or landscape) and nonstructural interventions (policies, knowledge development, awareness, methods and operating practices, including participatory mechanisms) have helped to reduce the impact of climate change. Further, market-based instruments such as credits and crop insurance were also developed to help poor households in many developing countries to cope with the uncertainties. The uptake of such adaptation practices is lagging, however, but informal institutions are playing a key role as they rely on enforcement methods and are not supported by the government. Mainstreaming adaptation and enhancing adaptive capacity could be increased by encouraging partnerships between informal processes and formal interventions to facilitate adaptation by the poor. The cost of adaptation is also significantly higher in developing countries. Nonetheless, more attention is needed in addressing future climate scenarios through agricultural research and development, irrigation development, infrastructure, and improved irrigation efficiency

    Exploratory Analysis of Highly Heterogeneous Document Collections

    We present an effective multifaceted system for exploratory analysis of highly heterogeneous document collections. Our system is based on intelligently tagging individual documents in a purely automated fashion and exploiting these tags in a powerful faceted browsing framework. Tagging strategies employed include both unsupervised and supervised approaches based on machine learning and natural language processing. As one of our key tagging strategies, we introduce the KERA algorithm (Keyword Extraction for Reports and Articles). KERA extracts topic-representative terms from individual documents in a purely unsupervised fashion and is revealed to be significantly more effective than state-of-the-art methods.     Motility induced changes in viscosity of suspensions of swimming microbes in extensional flows

    Suspensions of motile cells are model systems for understanding the unique mechanical properties of living materials which often consist of ensembles of self-propelled particles. We present here a quantitative comparison of theory against experiment for the rheology of such suspensions. The influence of motility on viscosities of cell suspensions is studied using a novel acoustically-driven microfluidic capillary-breakup extensional rheometer. Motility increases the extensional viscosity of suspensions of algal pullers, but decreases it in the case of bacterial or sperm pushers. A recent model [Saintillan, Phys. Rev. E, 2010, 81:56307] for dilute active suspensions is extended to obtain predictions for higher concentrations, after independently obtaining parameters such as swimming speeds and diffusivities.     An organic channel structure formed by the supramolecular assembly of trithiocyanuric acid and 4,4'-bipyridyl

    Trithiocyanuric acid (TCA) and 4,4'-bipyridyl (BP) form hydrogen-bonded co-crystals with aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, p-xylene and anthracene. The TCA-BP co-crystal is composed of cavities formed by the N-H···N hydrogen bonds between the two molecules, and the three-dimensional structure contains channels of approximately 10 Å where aromatic molecules are accommodated. The molar ratios of TCA, BP and the aromatic compound in the co-crystals are 2:1:1 or 2:1:0.5. Benzene, toluene and p-xylene are removed from the channels around 190, 183 and 170°C respectively, and these aromatic guests can be reintroduced into the empty channels of the apo-hosts. The apo-hosts with empty channels have reasonable thermal stability and exhibit shape selectivity in that the empty channels accommodate p-xylene but not m- or o-xylene or mesitylene

    Density, dielectric and X-ray studies of Smectic A-Smectic A transitions

    We report here the results of detailed density, dielectric and X-ray studies on three systems exhibiting different types of Smectic A-Smectic A transitions. It is found that although the layer spacing shows marked changes at the transitions, the corresponding density changes are extremely small. In every case studied, the dielectric anisotropy shows a pronounced decrease on going over to the lower temperature smectic A phase. This decrease can be correlated with the structural changes
