Impacts of Multimodal Displays with Small Mobile Viewscapes on Operators in Safety-Critical Systems
Real-time information is essential for effective operator decision making and performance in safety-critical systems, as operators must make crucial decisions quickly, utilizing relevant information to monitor, assess and respond. Research examining the impact of ultimodal displays with augmented reality (AR) on operators performing safety-critical work has shown improved operator situation awareness, but mixed results with respect to performance and workload. Multiple-resource theory (MRT) posits that individuals will experience different performance impacts when information is received using different modalities, compared to when the information is communicated using a single modality. Earlier work provides a theoretical basis for expectations about the impacts of multimodal displays, but does not address the costs or impacts of digital layers of AR imagery in multimodal displays with small viewscapes, a gap our research addresses in safety-critical systems such as Arctic search and rescue and maritime navigation
Estimating covariance matrix with high frequency data for Currency Portfolio Optimization
Paper presented at the 4th Strathmore International Mathematics Conference (SIMC 2017), 19 - 23 June 2017, Strathmore University, Nairobi, Kenya. The covariation between asset returns plays a crucial role in modern finance both in portfolio optimization and risk management. The paper is an effort towards estimating a covariance matrix using high-dimensional, high-frequency data (quadratic covariation) from the perspective of portfolio selection. An investors’ or a portfolio managers’ objective is to solve the portfolio optimization problem i.e. ensure risk is minimized for any given return through huse of covariance matrices and subsequent rebalancing. Besides significant increase in the sample size for estimation of the covariance matrix, use of HFD also enables for better adaptation to the local volatilities and local correlations among a vast number of assets thus an improved estimation of portfolio variance. One-minute forex data were used across the six major world currencies; i.e. EUR/USD, EUR/JPY, EUR/CHF, EUR/GBP, EUR/AUD and EUR/CAD for the period 03/01/2016 17:00 to 26/12/2016 01:38 with a robust check using out-of- sample 30-minute EUR/USD data as from 08/12/2016 01:00 to 07/02/2017 11:30. The paper employ sa quasi- maximum likelihood estimator that is rate efficient as well as consistent on the basis of time synchronization approach and compares volatility estimates to that from traditional models in which returns follow the geometric Brownian Motion. Covariance matrix estimates based on intraday returns and daily returns are constructed and evaluated. The results tend to be in favor of the high-frequency data. However, these results could be biased towards an investor or portfolio manager with a shorter rebalancing interval
(Re)Design to Mitigate Political Polarization : Reflecting Habermas' ideal communication space in the United States of America and Finland
Social Media platforms are increasingly being used for political activities and communication, and research suggests that social media design and use is contributing to the polarization of the public sphere. This study draws on Habermas' ideals concerning deliberative democracy to explore if novel interface designs that diversify information sources through content recommendation, can decrease polarization. Through a design-probe interview approach and insights generated from 19 political and citizen experts in Finland and the United States, we found that our deliberative design can lead to depolarization, while creating additional complexity through which users question content and information. We discuss the need to move beyond naive content recommendation, and user interface level changes, in order to work towards a depolarized public sphere.Peer reviewe

Healthy Child Food Motorbike Taxi Program (OMAS) to Prevent Stunting in Sungai Pinang Village
Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to address the issue of stunting, a form of chronic malnutrition affecting children’s growth and development. This problem is influenced by various factors, including child characteristics and socio-economic conditions. The lack of knowledge about stunting among village residents necessitated an intervention to provide insight and education.
Method: Students from Riau University’s KKN program collaborated with the Sungai Pinang Village Posyandu to conduct stunting prevention outreach activities. These activities were designed to educate parents, particularly mothers, about the importance of adopting a healthy and clean lifestyle. In addition to these outreach activities, the students implemented a program called “Motorbike Taxi for Healthy Children’s Food”. This program aimed to provide examples of nutritionally balanced food menus beneficial for children’s growth and development.
Practical Applications: The practical application of this study lies in its potential to increase community awareness about stunting prevention and healthy food menus. By providing practical examples and education, the residents of the village can make informed decisions about their children’s nutrition.
Conclusion: The desired outcome of these activities is a community that has sufficient knowledge about stunting prevention and healthy food menus. The hope is that village residents will no longer feel unfamiliar with the concept of stunting and will know how to prevent it. Furthermore, they will be able to provide healthy food for their children, contributing to the overall reduction of stunting in the community

World radiocommunication conference 12 : implications for the spectrum eco-system
Spectrum allocation is once more a key issue facing the global telecommunications industry. Largely overlooked in current debates, however, is the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC). Decisions taken by WRC shape the future roadmap of the telecommunications industry, not least because it has the ability to shape the global spectrum allocation framework. In the debates of WRC-12 it is possible to identify three main issues: enhancement of the international spectrum regulatory framework, regulatory measures required to introduce Cognitive Radio Systems (CRS) technologies; and, additional spectrum allocation to mobile service. WRC-12 eventually decided not to change the current international radio regulations with regard to the first two issues and agreed to the third issue. The main implications of WRC-12 on the spectrum ecosystem are that most of actors are not in support of the concept of spectrum flexibility associated with trading and that the concept of spectrum open access is not under consideration. This is explained by the observation that spectrum trading and spectrum commons weaken state control over spectrum and challenge the main principles and norms of the international spectrum management regime. In addition, the mobile allocation issue has shown the lack of conformity with the main rules of the regime: regional spectrum allocation in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) three regions, and the resistance to the slow decision making procedures. In conclusion, while the rules and decision-making procedures of the international spectrum management regime were challenged in the WRC-12, the main principles and norms are still accepted by the majority of countries
