Hannah Arendt and the constitutive elements of a non-liberal concept of citizenship
The objective of this article is to undertake an analysis of the concept of citizenship based on certain elements of Hannah Arendt's political theory: freedom, action, plurality and public space. Those elements are necessary to compose a concept under its specific political form, which can be enunciated as follows: citizenship is the political action of individuals who seek in the sphere of the public space of plurality the achievement of freedom. In its extension, this concept may be interpreted as a critique in front of the deficiencies of the liberal thesis of citizenship, amending its limitations. Simultaneously, it casts perspectives of proximity (and also, of remoteness) in relation to the political theory of republicanism.213026729
Glycosylation of cancer extracellular vesicles: Capture strategies, functional roles and potential clinical applications
Glycans are major constituents of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Alterations in the glycosylation pathway are a common feature of cancer cells, which gives rise to de novo or increased synthesis of particular glycans. Therefore, glycans and glycoproteins have been widely used in the clinic as both stratification and prognosis cancer biomarkers. Interestingly, several of the known tumor-associated glycans have already been identified in cancer EVs, highlighting EV glycosylation as a potential source of circulating cancer biomarkers. These particles are crucial vehicles of cell–cell communication, being able to transfer molecular information and to modulate the recipient cell behavior. The presence of particular glycoconjugates has been described to be important for EV protein sorting, uptake and organ-tropism. Furthermore, specific EV glycans or glycoproteins have been described to be able to distinguish tumor EVs from benign EVs. In this review, the application of EV glycosylation in the development of novel EV detection and capture methodologies is discussed. The PrHand: Functional Assessment of an Underactuated Soft-Robotic Prosthetic Hand
Functional tests aim to compare the functionality
of a prosthesis with a human hand. The main objective of
this work is to present and evaluate an affordable prosthesis
(PrHand) built with soft robotic technologies and novel joints
based on compliant mechanisms. Two functional tests have
been selected in this work. The first is the AHAP protocol,
which evaluates how the prosthesis performs eight different
grips; three variables are considered: grasping, maintaining,
and grasping ability score (GAS). The results were 69.03%
with 57.77% in grasping and 80.28% in maintaining. The
second test is the AM-ULA, which evaluates the prosthesis by
performing 23 Activities of Daily Living. PrHand prosthesis
had a score of 2.5 over 4.0. The functionality of the PrHand
prosthesis has similar results to other prostheses evaluated
in the literature. The comparison with the human hand was
69%. PrHand presents a promising solution for amputees in
developing countries regarding cost and functionalit
Heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans: (un)expected allies in cancer clinical management
In an era when cancer glycobiology research is exponentially growing, we are witnessing a progressive translation of the major scientific findings to the clinical practice with the overarching aim of improving cancer patients’ management. Many mechanistic cell biology studies have demonstrated that heparan sulfate (HS) glycosaminoglycans are key molecules responsible for several molecular and biochemical processes, impacting extracellular matrix properties and cellular functions. HS can interact with a myriad of different ligands, and therefore, hold a pleiotropic role in regulating the activity of important cellular receptors and downstream signalling pathways. The aberrant expression of HS glycan chains in tumours determines main malignant features, such as cancer cell proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis. In this review, we devote particular attention to HS biological activities, its expression profile and modulation in cancer. Study of the arboreal component in two areas of the Submontane Rainforest in Ubatuba, Sao Paulo State
We studied the floristic composition and structure of the arboreal component (trees, palms and ferns with DBH equal to or greater than 4.8 cm) of two plots of Lower Montane Rain Forest in Ubatuba, SP, one with a history of selective logging and the other more preserved. We sampled 50 families, 114 genera and 193 species (four undetermined). The richest families were Myrtaceae, Fabaceae, Lauraceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae and Sapotaceae. In the disturbed plot we sampled 104 species, 72 genera and 39 families, and in the more preserved area, 152 species, 98 genera and 43 families. There were differences in species richness, in the prevalence of their succesional status and in the structure of the areas, and the multivariate analysis allowed recognition of two floristic blocks. Among all species, 33 were exclusive of the first plot and 95 were exclusive of the second plot. Almost half of the species (45%) occurred with only one or two individuals and 29 have some degree of rarity. Five species are in the category of vulnerable in the List of brazilian plant species threatened of extinction. The differences observed between the sites studied, as well as the occurrence of rare and endangered species highlight the importance of the conservation of the area.11231333
Preliminary field screening of maize landrace germplasm from northeastern Mexico under high temperatures
Northeastern Mexico has a wide variety of maize landraces that have not been characterized, and landraces vari¬eties may be a good source of new allelic diversity for useful traits. This study evaluated 28 accessions from Tam¬aulipas, in Northeast Mexico, chosen by phenology and for agronomic characteristics to represent the diversity of germplasm in the collection and agro-ecosystems of this area. They were evaluated under high temperature in the field as a basis for an efficient use of this maize germplasm in a breeding program; in particular we investigated changes in agronomic characteristics affected by high temperatures in all growing seasons. Results indicated that in late planting dates air temperatures become excessively high during the flowering period and growing season; in these conditions a loss in grain yield can be sustained. In this study, the loss initially manifests itself as a reduc¬tion in grain yield (> 32%) because of fewer grains per ear (>26%). Landrace maize accessions C-3030, C-3049, C-3015, Pob. I, Pob. II, ZEM-148 and C-4050 were identified with high relative yield and yield components traits under high temperature conditions. These accessions have greater agronomic stability, and also are potential donors of genes to improve maize tolerance to high temperature
SADI-S with Extended Duodeno-Bulb Preservation: Case Report
Obesity has been growing in Brazil and in the world. It is reaching epidemic proportions, and bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for patients with this disease. Among the procedures described in the literature, ileal surgeries such as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) and single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) present better long-term results in terms of weight loss and comorbidities control. However, there are concerns regarding long term nutritional problems with these procedures. In this case report the aim is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of preserving an extended duodenal bulb segment, in the SADIS-S procedure, when there are difficulties in dissecting the retrobulbar region, as occurred here, due to fibrosis in this area. This assures the maintenance of the proposed surgical technique, in such a situation. The dissection and transection of the duodenum was done 7 cm distally to the pylorus, under endoscopic view, proximally to the papillae, where the tissue was normal. Additionally, due the importance of the duodenal mucosa on minerals and trace elements absorption and the release of important hormones in this region, this case report elicits the evaluation of the impact of this technical modification, which occurred casually, in the nutritional, hormonal and metabolic results, long term. In this case report, the extended duodenal length has demonstrated reasonable weight loss, adequate comorbidities control and good nutritional status, so far. “A Good Death” - Palliative Surgery in Trisomy 18
A trissomia 18 caracteriza-se por múltiplas anomalias, incluindo doença cardíaca em 60 a 90% dos casos e elevada mortalidade. O mau prognóstico global, conduz habitualmente a uma politica de “cuidados mínimos” mas, paliar, é também nestas situações, um imperativo ético. Descreve-se o caso de uma recém-nascida sem diagnóstico pré natal, mas
com confirmação por cariotipo, com cardiopatia, que condicionou insuficiência cardíaca congestiva e angústia respiratória crescente, inviabilizando alta hospitalar, como era desejo da família. Após consenso entre os pais e o corpo clínico responsável, foi decidida intervenção cirúrgica cardíaca paliativa, que possibilitou melhoria clínica e alta para o domicílio.
Os autores defendem que a cirurgia cardíaca pode ser uma atitude a considerar em casos de trissomia 18, pois pode aliviar o sofrimento
