    Methodologies of Application of Sol-Gel Based Solution onto Substrate: A Review

    Just as the diverse as the various substrates that can be coated is the choice of several coating methods by which the coating can be applied to these pretreated surfaces. They include the manual methods, where great skills and experience is needed, on the other hand there are automated and robotics coating control methods where coating can be applied with more precise manner. Sol-gel process is one of the promising bottom up nano-coating technologies to develop thin film over various metallic substrates. The property and characteristic of the resulting film is strongly influenced by the various parameters and reaction conditions of the sol-gel process and of course on the deposition techniques. In this review, we have thrown some lights on different coating application processes covering theoretical principle, advantages, disadvantages, and special various parameters controlling the final film quality

    Study of HgOH to Assess Its Suitability for Electron Electric Dipole Moment Searches

    In search of suitable molecular candidates for probing the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron (de), a property that arises due to parity and time-reversal violating (P,T-odd) interactions, we consider the triatomic mercury hydroxide (HgOH) molecule. The impetus for this proposal is based on previous works on two systems: the recently proposed ytterbium hydroxide (YbOH) experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 133002 (2017)] that demonstrates the advantages of polyatomics for such EDM searches, and the finding that mercury halides provide the highest enhancement due to de compared to other diatomic molecules [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 183001 (2015)]. We identify the ground state of HgOH as being in a bent geometry, and show that its intrinsic EDM sensitivity is comparable to the corresponding value for YbOH. Along with the theoretical results, we discuss plausible experimental schemes for an EDM measurement in HgOH. Furthermore, we provide pilot calculations of the EDM sensitivity for de for HgCH₃ and HgCF₃, that are natural extensions of HgOH

    The Uptake of 5-Hydroxytryptamine by Litomosoides carinii and the Effect of Antifilarials

    Litomosoides carinii, the filarial parasite of cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus), has been shown to possess both high and low affinity uptake mechanisms for 5-hydroxytryp-tamine (5-HT). The Michaelis-Menten constant (K_m) and Vmax values for high affinity system were 1.9 μM and 1.25 μM/g/2 min, while the corresponding values for the low affinity system were 10 μM and 6.6 μM/g/2 min respectively. The uptake mechanism was found to be temperature dependent and was inhibited by microfilaricides-diethylcar-bamazine and centperazine, the latter exhibiting more pronounced effect.     Prevalence and risk of hepatitis E virus infection in the HIV population of Nepal

    Background: Infection with the hepatitis E virus (HEV) can cause acute hepatitis in endemic areas in immune-competent hosts, as well as chronic infection in immune-compromised subjects in non-endemic areas. Most studies assessing HEV infection in HIV-infected populations have been performed in developed countries that are usually affected by HEV genotype 3. The objective of this study is to measure the prevalence and risk of acquiring HEV among HIV-infected individuals in Nepal. Methods: We prospectively evaluated 459 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-positive individuals from Nepal, an endemic country for HEV, for seroprevalence of HEV and assessed risk factors associated with HEV infection. All individuals were on antiretroviral therapy and healthy blood donors were used as controls. Results: We found a high prevalence of HEV IgG (39.4%) and HEV IgM (15.3%) in HIV-positive subjects when compared to healthy HIV-negative controls: 9.5% and 4.4%, respectively (OR: 6.17, 95% CI 4.42-8.61, p \u3c 0.001 and OR: 3.7, 95% CI 2.35-5.92, p \u3c 0.001, respectively). Individuals residing in the Kathmandu area showed a significantly higher HEV IgG seroprevalance compared to individuals residing outside of Kathmandu (76.8% vs 11.1%, OR: 30.33, 95% CI 18.02-51.04, p = 0.001). Mean CD4 counts, HIV viral load and presence of hepatitis B surface antigen correlated with higher HEV IgM rate, while presence of hepatitis C antibody correlated with higher rate of HEV IgG in serum. Overall, individuals with HEV IgM positivity had higher levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) than IgM negative subjects, suggesting active acute infection. However, no specific symptoms for hepatitis were identified. Conclusion: HIV-positive subjects living in Kathmandu are at higher risk of acquiring HEV infection as compared to the general population and to HIV-positive subjects living outside Kathmandu

    A Systematic Screen for Micro-RNAs Regulating the Canonical Wnt Pathway

    MicroRNAs (miRs) and the canonical Wnt pathway are known to be dysregulated in human cancers and play key roles during cancer initiation and progression. To identify miRs that can modulate the activity of the Wnt pathway we performed a cell-based overexpression screen of 470 miRs in human HEK293 cells. We identified 38 candidate miRs that either activate or repress the canonical Wnt pathway. A literature survey of all verified candidate miRs revealed that the Wnt-repressing miRs tend to be anti-oncomiRs and down-regulated in cancers while Wnt-activating miRs tend to be oncomiRs and upregulated during tumorigenesis. Epistasis-based functional validation of three candidate miRs, miR-1, miR-25 and miR-613, confirmed their inhibitory role in repressing the Wnt pathway and suggest that while miR-25 may function at the level of â-catenin (β-cat), miR-1 and miR-613 act upstream of β-cat. Both miR-25 and miR-1 inhibit cell proliferation and viability during selection of human colon cancer cell lines that exhibit dysregulated Wnt signaling. Finally, transduction of miR-1 expressing lentiviruses into primary mammary organoids derived from Conductin-lacZ mice significantly reduced the expression of the Wnt-sensitive β-gal reporter. In summary, these findings suggest the potential use of Wnt-modulating miRs as diagnostic and therapeutic tools in Wnt-dependent diseases, such as cancer
