[EN] Tennis coaches are facing considerable challenges as the game is disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The long tradition of tennis in the Latin American region and in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking European countries makes comparing these regions particularly interesting. The purpose of this research was to study the perceptions of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking tennis coaches working in Latin American and European countries regarding the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their health, professional, and economic circumstances. The perceptions of 655 coaches from 19 Latin American and European countries were collected using an ad-hoc questionnaire. Coaches reported on the incidence of the virus in terms of infection and quarantine, the impact on their coaching programs, and on their professional development, training, and education. They were also asked about their perception of the overall situation as a threat. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on the health and the profession of tennis coaches. Although Latin American coaches reported a greater impact on their health, economic, and professional circumstances, they viewed the pandemic as an opportunity for professional improvement and training as compared to the perceptions of European coaches. In light of these results, implications, practical applications, and future research are proposed.Crespo, M.; Martínez-Gallego, R.; Ramón-Llín, J. (2021). [EN] Background: Tennis ball tracking technology allows the aquirement of novel and reliable data about several performance indicators, such as volley positions. This information is key to understand match dynamics in doubles tennis and to better help preparing players for the demands they will face in match play. As such, the purpose of this study was to describe and compare the different types of volley positions in men's and women's doubles professional tennis. (2) Methods: Ball tracking data were collected for 46 women (Billie Jean King Cup) and 96 men's doubles matches (Davis Cup). The variables used were the distance to the net, the distance to the centre of the court and the height of the impact. A K-Means cluster analysis was used to identify in each subsample different profiles of volley locations. (3) Results: The inferential analysis revealed differences in men's (distance to the net eta(2) = 0.72, distance to the centre of the court eta(2) = 0.77 and impact height eta(2) = 0.63) and women's subsamples (distance to the net eta(2) = 0.48, distance to the centre of the court eta(2) = 0.52 and impact height eta(2) = 0.51). (4) Conclusions: The results allowed the suggestion of a higher variability in men's matches, as there were seven different clusters identified, and only four in women's.This work was supported by the International Tennis Federation (Project: Notational analysis in doubles tennis ).Martínez-Gallego, R.; Ramón-Llín, J.; Crespo, M. We aimed to compare the match-play and kinematic demands of the translation and rotation movements of elite wheelchair padel players as a function of match results. Twenty-two elite male players were video-analysed with a two-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT) -corrected video system across seven matches of a professional tournament. Distance, turns, changes of direction, linear and angular speed, acceleration and the players’ heart rate (HR) were recorded. Losing couples in wheelchair padel covered greater distances than winners (P <0.001; r = 0.024) and did so at a higher speed (P <0.001; r = 0.06), while making greater efforts by accelerating (P <0.001; ∅ = -0.021), braking (P <0.001; ∅ = -0.014), and remaining less time stationary (P <0.001; ∅ = 0.059). In addition, losers performed more turns per rally (P <0.001; r = 0.04) at a faster speed, greater angular accelerations (P <0.001; V = 0.06) and greater average (P = 0.007; d = 0.91) and maximum (P = 0.20; d = 0.69) HR values. These data suggest that winner couples performed a better court positioning and employed a strategy to move the opponent during rallies in order to avoid them optimally reaching the ball.Sin financiación3.240 JCR (2020) Q2, 26/72 Multidisciplinary Sciences0.990 SJR (2020) Q1, 13/135 MultidisciplinaryNo data IDR 2020UE

    Get PDF
The aim were to analyse the effect of the tactical formation of the serving pair on serving and follow-through parameters in professional padel. 1089 points distributed in 217  men's matches (19 sets), corresponding to 8 matches of the World Padel Tour circuit played in 2020, were analysed by systematic observation. The results show that from the left side (p=0.002), in both formation the side wall is the predominant direction and independently of the player serving (p0.05), being the backhand volley the predominant one in both tactical situations. In conclusion, the serving situation influences the tactical parameters of the serve and return allowing the creation of specific strategies during the game

The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of “no-ad scoring” rule on the temporal and outcome variables on professional World Padel Tour, depending on the gender and the tournament round. Full text link
This study aimed to analyse serve statistics in elite padel players regarding court side and gender, and its relation to strategy and golden point. The sample contained 445 serves from 8 matches (4 male and 4 female) of the 2020 Masters Finals World Padel Tour. Variables related to serve (number, direction, court side and effectiveness), with the strategy (traditional or Australian) and with golden point were registered though systematic observation. Results showed differences according to gender and court side were found. Female players serve more to the center of the court (“T”) than men. In right side of the court, players serve more to the “T” when they use Australian strategy, comparing to left side. 15% more serves to the side wall are realized on the left side than the right, regardless of the serve strategy. Regarding golden point, the service players won 12% more point than when it was not a decisive point. Such knowledge may constitute a useful guide in the design of appropriate game strategies and specific-training session based on actual competition contextSin financiaciónNo data JCR 2021No data SJR 20210.321 IDR (2020) C3, 25/43 Deport

Relationship between Ball Impact Point, Type of Stroke and Shot Direction in High-Performance Padel

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between ball impact point, type of stroke, and shot direction in high-performance padel. A total of 8363 strokes from nine matches of three national tournaments involving a total of 24 male players were subjected to systematic observation. The variables analyzed were type of stroke, shot direction, and ball impact. A descriptive analysis was conducted for each study variable, with a comparison of the variables performed using Pearson’s Chi-Square test, column proportions determined using a Z test according to Bonferroni (p < 0.05), an association established by corrected standardized residuals, and an effect size calculated using Crammer’s V. The results showed that the most-used stroke types were volleys, serves, groundstrokes, and backwall shots (67.6%). The cross-court direction stood out over down-the-line and inside-out directions. Finally, almost two-thirds of the impact point locations were forward. In addition, the type of stroke determined shot direction and ball impact location. Moreover, the ball’s impact location significantly determined shot direction. In conclusion, these results suggest that the ball impact location and the type of stroke provide information from which padel shot direction can be anticipated. Such knowledge may constitute a very important factor affecting performance and success among padel players
