    Effect of antiretroviral therapy on progression of endothelial dysfunction in acquired immune deficiency syndrome patients

    Background: Though the natural history of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in many patients has been dramatically altered through the use of antiretroviral therapy, this treatment paradigm of chronic chemotherapy may not be sustainable given the short and long-term toxicities of these medications. Currently, there is lack of data in the Indian literature regarding study of endothelial dysfunction in HIV patients. The purpose of our research was to study the effect of anti-retroviral therapy on the progression of endothelial dysfunction in HIV/AIDS patients.Methods: The study comprises a total number of 30 adult HIV positive patients of both sex with confirmed HIV seropositivity and CD 4+T cell count < 200/µl. None of these patients had ever received anti retroviral therapy (ART). These patients were subjected to detailed clinical examination and markers of endothelial dysfunction - Flow mediated vasodilatation (FMD) of brachial artery, S. Nitrite and C-reactive protein (CRP) were performed before starting ART. Study group patients were started on ART, they received triple drug ART (Lamivudine 150 mg BD, Stavudine 30 mg BD, Nevirapine 200 mg BD). In patients on ART after a period of 6 months, markers of endothelial dysfunction - FMD, S. Nitrite and CRP tests were reassessed.Results: FMD (4.08±3.58) and S. Nitrite (20.83±13.75) were also depressed after six months of anti retroviral therapy. Also, patients showed more CRP positivity and higher titres after ART. CD 4+T cell count before ART (124.16±84.46) and after ART (186.63±70.96). This rise in count was statistically significant.Conclusions: HIV patients who are receiving ART demonstrate a number of metabolic abnormalities with more severe depression in markers of endothelial function

    Economic dynamics of tissue cultured strawberry (Fragaria× ananassa) under the influence of integrated plant nutrients in humid sub tropical hills of North Eastern India

    Satisfactory and sustainable level of agricultural production can be achieved by combined application of inorganic fertilizers with organic manures, bio-fertilizers, bio-regulators and vermicompost. A field experiment was conducted during 2010-12 at experimental farm, Department of Horticulture, Aromatic and Medicinal Plants, Mizoram University, Aizawl, India, to find out the profitability of tissue cultured strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) (cv. Festival) cultivation by using various integrated plant nutrient system (IPNS) combining inorganic fertilizers with organic manures, bio-fertilizers and bio-regulators. The response of IPNS on economics of strawberry indicated that the overall cost of cultivation as well as economics of strawberry production was significantly influenced by integration of various components. Among the different treatments, the highest expenditure of Rupees 2 077 576.83/ha was incurred in 100% RDF + vermicompost as against the lowest in control. With respect to the income, the highest net income of Rupees 7 298 119.27/ha was obtained in 75 % RDF + vermicompost + Azospirillum + PSB + 50 ppm GA3+50 ppm BA. The same treatment also recorded the highest cost benefit ratio of 1: 3.51

    Open carpal tunnel release is one of the commonest performed procedures in hand surgery. We performed a prospective randomised control trial to compare the efficacy and patient satisfaction of the traditional arm tourniquet versus infiltration of adrenaline and local anaesthetic solution to achieve haemostasis during the procedure. Using a combination of objective and subjective measures we concluded that infiltration of local anaesthetic and adrenaline not only provided adequate haemostasis but also provided a significantly more tolerable experience for the patient during the procedure

    Inhibition of Pediatric Glioblastoma Tumor Growth by the Anti-Cancer Agent OKN-007 in Orthotopic Mouse Xenografts

Here, we describe the use of conventional and advanced in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to assess a novel orthotopic xenograft pGBM mouse (IC-3752GBM patient-derived culture) model, and to monitor the effects of the anti-cancer agent OKN-007 as an inhibitor of pGBM tumor growth. Immunohistochemistry support data is also presented for cell proliferation and tumor growth signaling. OKN-007 was found to significantly decrease tumor volumes (p<0.05) and increase animal survival (p<0.05) in all OKN-007-treated mice compared to untreated animals. In a responsive cohort of treated animals, OKN-007 was able to significantly decrease tumor volumes (p<0.0001), increase survival (p<0.001), and increase diffusion (p<0.01) and perfusion rates (p<0.05). OKN-007 also significantly reduced lipid tumor metabolism in responsive animals (Lip1.3 and Lip0.9)-to-creatine ratio (p<0.05), as well as significantly decrease tumor cell proliferation (p<0.05) and microvessel density (p<0.05). Furthermore, in relationship to the PDGFRα pathway, OKN-007 was able to significantly decrease SULF2 (p<0.05) and PDGFR-α (platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α) (p<0.05) immunoexpression, and significantly increase decorin expression (p<0.05) in responsive mice. This study indicates that OKN-007 may be an effective anti-cancer agent for some patients with pGBMs by inhibiting cell proliferation and angiogenesis, possibly via the PDGFRα pathway, and could be considered as an additional therapy for pediatric brain tumor patients.Yeshttp://www.plosone.org/static/editorial#pee

    Antioxidant and Phytochemical analysis of selected lichen species from Mizoram, India

    Lichens are an important source of biologically active substances, primarily phenols, which are well known for their antioxidant properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluated phytochemical constituents (flavonoids and phenols), and the antioxidant activity of the methanol extract of the selected lichens species viz. Usnea baileyi,&nbsp;Hypotrachyna cirrhata and Lobaria pulmonaria&nbsp; collected from Tawi Wildlife Sanctuary, Mizoram, India. The total phenolic content and total flavonoid of the various extracts varied from 31.11 to 67.84 mg of Gallic acid equivalent per gram dry weight (GAE/g DW) and from 27.43 to 37.06 mg of Quercetin equivalent per gram dry weight (QE/g DW) respectively. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the methanol extract of tested samples showed a concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 value ranges from 133.6 µg/ml in&nbsp;L. pulmonaria&nbsp;to 243.9 µg/ml in&nbsp;U. baileyi. A comparison between lichens extract and positive control (BHT) showed a strong antioxidant capacity (IC50=10.81 μg/ml) of positive control than the lichens methanolic extract. A high negative and significant negative correlation (P&lt;0.05) was observed between total phenol content and antioxidant activity IC50 of DPPH assay. Moreover, a positively high significant correlation was also obtained between total flavonoid and phenol content (P&lt;0.01). The present study showed that bioactive compounds present in the lichen thallus may be used as good sources of natural antioxidants and a potential candidate for curing several ailments.&nbsp
