Stress versus temperature dependent activation energies in creep
The activation energy for creep at low stresses and elevated temperatures is lattice diffusion, where the rate controlling mechanism for deformation is dislocation climb. At higher stresses and intermediate temperatures, the rate controlling mechanism changes from that of dislocation climb to one of obstacle-controlled dislocation glide. Along with this change, there occurs a change in the activation energy. It is shown that a temperature-dependent Gibbs free energy does a good job of correlating steady-state creep data, while a stress-dependent Gibbs free energy does a less desirable job of correlating the same data. Applications are made to copper and a LiF-22 mol. percent CaF2 hypereutectic salt
Explicit Space-Time Codes Achieving The Diversity-Multiplexing Gain Tradeoff
A recent result of Zheng and Tse states that over a quasi-static channel,
there exists a fundamental tradeoff, referred to as the diversity-multiplexing
gain (D-MG) tradeoff, between the spatial multiplexing gain and the diversity
gain that can be simultaneously achieved by a space-time (ST) block code. This
tradeoff is precisely known in the case of i.i.d. Rayleigh-fading, for T>=
n_t+n_r-1 where T is the number of time slots over which coding takes place and
n_t,n_r are the number of transmit and receive antennas respectively. For T <
n_t+n_r-1, only upper and lower bounds on the D-MG tradeoff are available.
In this paper, we present a complete solution to the problem of explicitly
constructing D-MG optimal ST codes, i.e., codes that achieve the D-MG tradeoff
for any number of receive antennas. We do this by showing that for the square
minimum-delay case when T=n_t=n, cyclic-division-algebra (CDA) based ST codes
having the non-vanishing determinant property are D-MG optimal. While
constructions of such codes were previously known for restricted values of n,
we provide here a construction for such codes that is valid for all n.
For the rectangular, T > n_t case, we present two general techniques for
building D-MG-optimal rectangular ST codes from their square counterparts. A
byproduct of our results establishes that the D-MG tradeoff for all T>= n_t is
the same as that previously known to hold for T >= n_t + n_r -1.Comment: Revised submission to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Pregnancy diagnosis by laparoscopy in free range rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)
The present study involved 50 adult female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatto) of age ranging between 4 to 15 years. Pregnancy diagnosis was done by using laparoscopic method. Anesthesia was achieved by using xylazine (2mg/kg) and ketamine (10mg/kg) intramuscularly. The gravid uterus was located close to the urinary bladder in early pregnancy and in abdominal cavity in the mid and late stage of pregnancy. The procedure was completed within 10 - 12 minutes. There were no complications after the surgery and recovery of animal was smooth and uneventful. The results of this study showed that laparoscopic method is also one of the methods of pregnancy diagnosis in rhesus macaques and it can be a precise and a reliable method of pregnancy diagnosis in rhesus macaques. Keywords: Free range, Laparoscopy, Pregnancy diagnosis, Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta
Extremely uniform lasing wavelengths of InP microdisk lasers heterogeneously integrated on SOI
A standard deviation in lasing wavelength lower than 500pm is characterized on nominally identical and optically-pumped microdisk lasers, heterogeneously integrated on the same SOI circuit. This lasing wavelength uniformity is obtained using electron-beam lithography
Near-IR studies of recurrent nova V745 Scorpii during its 2014 outburst
The recurrent nova (RN) V745 Scorpii underwent its third known outburst on
2014 February 6. Infrared monitoring of the eruption on an almost daily basis,
starting from 1.3d after discovery, shows the emergence of a powerful blast
wave generated by the high velocity nova ejecta exceeding 4000 kms
plowing into its surrounding environment. The temperature of the shocked gas is
raised to a high value exceeding 10K immediately after outburst
commencement. The energetics of the outburst clearly surpass those of similar
symbiotic systems like RS Oph and V407 Cyg which have giant secondaries. The
shock does not show a free-expansion stage but rather shows a decelerative
Sedov-Taylor phase from the beginning. Such strong shockfronts are known to be
sites for ray generation. V745 Sco is the latest nova, apart from five
other known novae, to show ray emission. It may be an important
testbed to resolve the crucial question whether all novae are generically
ray emitters by virtue of having a circumbinary reservoir of material
that is shocked by the ejecta rather than ray generation being
restricted to only symbiotic systems with a shocked red giant (RG) wind. The
lack of a free-expansion stage favors V745 Sco to have a density enhancement
around the white dwarf (WD), above that contributed by a RG wind. Our analysis
also suggests that the WD in V745 Sco is very massive and a potential
progenitor for a future SN Ia explosion.Comment: To appear in ApJ (Letters
Climate‐driven evolutionary change in reproductive and early‐acting life‐history traits in the perennial grass Festuca ovina
Reproductive and early‐acting life‐history traits are likely to be particularly important determinants of plant fitness under a changing climate. There have, however, been few robust tests of the evolution of these traits under chronic climate change in natural ecosystems. Such studies are urgently needed, to evaluate the contribution of evolutionary change to population persistence.
Here, we examine climate‐driven evolutionary change in reproductive and early‐acting plant life‐history traits in the long‐lived perennial plant, Festuca ovina.
We collected established plants of F. ovina from species‐rich calcareous grassland at the Buxton Climate Change Impacts Laboratory (BCCIL), after 17 years of in situ experimental drought treatment.
P1 plants collected from drought‐treated and control (ambient climate) plots at BCCIL were used to create an open‐pollinated F1 progeny array, which was subsequently validated using microsatellite markers to establish a robust bi‐parental pedigree. We measured the timing of germination and seed mass in the F1 progeny, the P1 paternal contribution to F1 offspring (paternal reproductive success), and assessed the effects of flowering time on the mating system.
F1 seed with ancestry in drought‐treated plots at BCCIL germinated significantly later than seed derived from individuals from control plots. P1 plants from the drought treatment flowered significantly earlier than those from the control plots in summer 2012, but not in 2013. Male reproductive success was also lower in P1 plants collected from drought plots than those from control plots. Furthermore, our pedigree revealed that mating among parents of the F1 progeny had been assortative with respect to flowering time.
Synthesis. Our study shows that chronic drought treatment at Buxton Climate Change Impacts Laboratory has driven rapid evolutionary change in reproductive and early‐acting life‐history traits in Festuca ovina, and suggests that evolutionary differentiation may be reinforced through changes in flowering time that reduce the potential for gene flow
Mechanical Properties of Surface-Charged Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) as Denture Resins
The aim of this study was to examine the mechanical properties of a new surface-modified denture resin for its suitability as denture base material. This experimental resin is made by copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MA) to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce a negative charge. Four experimental groups consisted of Orthodontic Dental Resin (DENTSPLY Caulk) as a control and three groups of modified PMMA (mPMMA) produced at differing ratios of methacrylic acid (5 : 95, 10 : 90, and 20 : 80 MA : MMA). A 3-point flexural test using the Instron Universal Testing Machine (Instron Corp.) measured force-deflection curves and a complete stress versus strain history to calculate the transverse strength, transverse deflection, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity. Analysis of Variance and Scheffe Post-test were performed on the data. Resins with increased methacrylic acid content exhibited lower strength values for the measured physical properties. The most significant decrease occurred as the methacrylic acid content was increased to 20% mPMMA. No significant differences at P < .05 were found in all parameters tested between the Control and 5% mPMMA
Inhibition of Melanoma Angiogenesis by Telomere Homolog Oligonucleotides
Telomere homolog oligonucleotides (T-oligos) activate an innate telomere-based program that leads to multiple anticancer effects. T-oligos act at telomeres to initiate signaling through the Werner protein and ATM kinase. We wanted to determine if T-oligos have antiangiogenic effects. We found that T-oligo-treated human melanoma (MM-AN) cells had decreased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor 2, angiopoeitin-1 and -2 and decreased VEGF secretion. T-oligos activated the transcription factor E2F1 and inhibited the activity of the angiogenic transcription factor, HIF-1α. T-oligos inhibited EC tubulogenesis and total tumor microvascular density matrix invasion by MM-AN cells and ECs in vitro. In melanoma SCID xenografts, two systemic T-oligo injections decreased by 60% (P<.004) total tumor microvascular density and the functional vessels density by 80% (P <.002). These findings suggest that restriction of tumor angiogenesis is among the host's innate telomere-based anticancer responses and provide further evidence that T-oligos may offer a powerful new approach for melanoma treatment.National Institutes of Health (CA10515); American Skin Associatio
