Polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma-an unusual presentation

    Get PDF
Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a neoplasm that occurs frequently in the mucosa of the soft and hard palates, in the buccal mucosa and in the upper lip and is very rare within the nasopharynx. We present a case of PLGA, which presented as a nasal polyp

A case of atypical and acute presentation of visceral leishmaniasis from non-endemic region, characterised by exudative pleural effusion and hepatitis is reporte

A Case of Multiple Sclerosis Presenting as Eight and Half Syndrome.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation, demyelination, gliosis (scarring), and neuronal loss; the course can be relapsing-remitting or progressive. Manifestations of MS vary from a benign illness to a rapidly evolving and incapacitating disease requiring profound lifestyle adjustments. We report a 24 year old female who presented with right internuclear ophthalmoplegia with right lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy which is called eight and half syndrome. The etiology in our patient was multiple sclerosis which was confirmed by radio-imaging studies. Patient improved on pulse therapy of methyl prednisolone and tapering dose of steroids

    Isolated Amoebic Abscess of Spleen

    Get PDF
Amoebic liver abscess is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of amoebiasis. Extrahepatic amoebic abscesses have occasionally been described in the lung, brain, and skin and presumably result from hematogenous spread. Isolated amoebic abscess of spleen has been reported scarcely in literature. We report here a case of isolated amoebic abscess of spleen

Automated monitoring of tweets for early detection of the 2014 Ebola epidemic

First reported in March 2014, an Ebola epidemic impacted West Africa, most notably Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. We demonstrate the value of social media for automated surveillance of infectious diseases such as the West Africa Ebola epidemic. We experiment with two variations of an existing surveillance architecture: the first aggregates tweets related to different symptoms together, while the second considers tweets about each symptom separately and then aggregates the set of alerts generated by the architecture. Using a dataset of tweets posted from the affected region from 2011 to 2014, we obtain alerts in December 2013, which is three months prior to the official announcement of the epidemic. Among the two variations, the second, which produces a restricted but useful set of alerts, can potentially be applied to other infectious disease surveillance and alert systems

Pseudohypoparathyroidism Presenting as Congestive Cardiac Failure

    Get PDF
Hypocalcaemia can have a variety of manifestations including cardiovascular changes. Hypocalcemic cardiomyopathy has been reported in hypoparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency but association of hypocalcemic cardiomyopathy in pseudohypo-parathyroidism has been reported scarcely in literature. We describe here a case of PHP presenting as congestive cardiac failure

Preliminary study of feasibility of an experiment looking for excited state double beta transitions in tin

An attempt to study the feasibility of a new experiment to search for double beta decay in 112^{112}Sn and 124^{124}Sn was carried out by using ultra-low background HPGe detector (244 cm3^{3}) inside the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN (Italy). A small sample of natural Sn was examined for 2367.5 h. The radioactive contamination of the sample has been estimated. The data has also been considered to calculate the present sensitivity for the proposed search; half-life limits ∼\sim 1017−101810^{17} - 10^{18} years for β+\beta^{+}EC and EC-EC processes in 112^{112}Sn and ∼\sim 101810^{18} years for β−β−\beta^{-}\beta^{-} transition in 124^{124}Sn were measured. In the last section of the paper the enhancement of the sensitivity for a proposed experiment with larger mass to reach theoretically estimated values of half-lives is discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in NIMA (in press
