Background: Uncorrected myopia or near sightedness is a major cause of vision impairment and legal blindness in younger population. It has huge social, psychological, economic and developmental implications. Changes in anterior chamber depth and a significant increase in axial length increase the risk of myopia which can lead to a number of visual complications. Method: This hospital based observational study was conducted in the OPD of department of ophthalmology, government medical college, Jammu over a period of one month from November 2022 to December 2022. A total of 100 patients were involved in this study. Data was interpreted in both descriptive and inferential statistics i.e., frequency and percentage distribution by using SPSS, version 22. Results: It was observed that maximum patients were in the age group of 21-30 years (46%) and male:female ratio was 1.38:1. A positive correlation was found between myopia with axial length and anterior chamber depth (p<0.05). Conclusions: Understanding the role of ocular biometric parameters in myopia is important in not only interpreting the disease pattern but also modelling the pathology and management of ocular diseases. It will go a long way in reducing the burden of myopia and its associated complications

Background: Eyelid carcinoma is the most common malignant lesion of eyelid region, and may involve either skin or tarus or inner layer of eyelid. The most common primary eyelid malignancy is basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC), sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC), malignant melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. The prevalence of these malignant lesion vary according to the geographical region. The aim of the study was to correlate the diagnosis of various peri-ocular lesions with the histological diagnosis. Methods: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted over a period of two years in patients with ocular and periocular skin lesions. All the patients underwent incision biopsy of the lesion biopsy material was sent for histopathology examination. The histological profile of the tumour was confirmed by the report. Results: The mean age in our study was 32.7±18.4 years with age range of 18 to 78 years, with 108 females (54%) and 92 males (46%). 173 (86.5%) were benign lesions and 27 (13.5%) were malignant lesions. Right eye was involved in more cases (n=104, 52%) as compared to left eye (n=96, 48%). Upper eye lid was involved more (n=102, 51%) than lower eye lid (n=98, 49%). Epidermal cyst was most common lesion (n=43, 21.5%), followed by dermoid cyst (n=28, 14%). Sebaceous gland carcinoma was most (n=15, 7.5%) malignant lesion, followed by basal cell carcinoma (n=7, 3, 5%).Conclusions: All excised eyelid lesions must be submitted for histopathologic confirmation to achieve 100% accuracy in diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis remains essential for adequate functional and cosmetic lid reconstruction

Background: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a developmental disorder in the anatomy of the diaphragm, which can range from the presence of a thin sac to the frank absence of part of the diaphragm. It results in protrusion of abdominal contents in the chest. CDH once considered as a surgical emergency is no longer a valid dictum. But definitive management of CDH is the surgical correction of defect. Study the demographics, presentation, diagnosis, and surgical outcomes of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) repair without significant associated congenital anomalies at a tertiary care institute. Methods: This was a retrospective study over 3 years from January 2021 to December 2023. Data was collected and noted from the medical records department. Patient’s clinical data in terms of demography, presentation, radiology, preoperative condition, timing of surgery after admission, intra-operative findings and post-operative course (including postoperative complications, duration of NICU stay, the incidence of sepsis, and need of inotropes), etc. Results: Most patients were male (85%). Among the total cohort, 70% were born outside the tertiary care institute and were referred from peripheral hospitals. Respiratory distress was the predominant complaint (85%). Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) was incidentally discovered in 5% of neonates. The majority of patients (70%) underwent surgical intervention between the 3rd postnatal day and up to one week. Left-sided herniation was observed in 90% of cases. An identifiable hernial sac was found in 18% of patients, with part or the entirety of the stomach being the most frequently encountered herniated viscera. Conclusions: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) presents as a significant congenital anomaly in the pediatric surgery domain. Hidden mortality in case of CDH leads to underreporting of the actual incidence of the condition. The success of surgical intervention depends on a myriad of factors, encompassing patient-specific attributes and surgical methodologies. However, instances devoid of overt congenital anomalies and featuring stable preoperative physiological parameters typically yield satisfactory surgical outcomes, with favorable results.

Background: Since Langenbuch's pioneering open cholecystectomy in 1882, surgical approaches to gall bladder diseases have seen continual evolution. Laparoscopic surgery has emerged as the preferred method for treating benign gall bladder conditions, offering benefits like decreased postoperative discomfort and enhanced cosmetic outcomes. Variations to the traditional four-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy have been developed to further refine the procedure. Methods: A comparative randomized study was carried out at the Department of Surgery, Govt. Medical College and Hospital Jammu, spanning from November 1, 2018, to October 31, 2019. Thirty eligible patients were recruited, with 15 assigned to undergo single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC - Group A) and 15 assigned to undergo four-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (Group B). Results: The study comprised patients aged between 20 and 60 years, with mean ages of 41.9 years for Group A and 40.3 years for Group B. Substantial variances were noted between the two groups concerning surgery duration, conversion rates, postoperative pain scores, and hospital stay. Conclusions: Based on our findings, single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) cannot be deemed a standard operative procedure, mainly due to its cost implications and the necessity for specialized instruments. At present, SILC does not serve as a substitute for four-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Continued research and advancements are warranted to solidify SILC as a feasible alternative

    Get PDF
Background: Retinal vein occlusion is one of the most common form of retinal vascular diseases. There’s a need for better understanding of various predisposing factors and pathophysiology of retinal vascular occlusions in order to improve the treatment modalities and have a better visual outcome including the relationship between axial length and retinal vascular occlusions. Methods: The study was conducted on 60 patients attending the eye OPDs of upgraded department of ophthalmology of government medical college, Jammu during a period of six months from April 2022 to September 2022. 30 patients were clinically diagnosed cases of retinal vein occlusion whereas 30 patients were their age and sex matched controls. The axial length of both eyes of all the patients were measured using A scan Biometry. The data was then analysed by student t test and chi square test. Results: It was found that the axial length of the affected eye was significantly shorter than the unaffected eye and the axial length of the unaffected eye was also significantly shorter than the control eye. Conclusions: It was concluded that the axial lengths in the patients having retinal vein occlusion were significantly shorter than the controls. The significant difference in the axial lengths can be a risk factor in the development of retinal vein occlusion

    Get PDF
With the swift rise of social networking sites, they have now come to hold tremendous influence in the daily lives of millions around the globe. The value of one’s social media profile and its reach has soared highly. This has invited the use of fake accounts, spammers and bots to spread content favourable to those who control them. Thus, in this project we propose using a machine learning approach to identify bots and distinguish them from genuine users. This is achieved by compiling activity and profile information of users on Twitter and subsequently using natural language processing and supervised machine learning to achieve the objective classification. Finally, we compare and analyse the efficiency and accuracy of different learning models in order to ascertain the best performing bot detection system

    Get PDF
Background: Peripheral neuropathy in pre diabetics has been studied in various studies till now. Many are in support and many against. No data was available in any study using all three criteria i.e. impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance and HbA1C. Aim was to study the frequency of peripheral neuropathy in pre diabetics in a tertiary health care centre in sub Himalayan region. Methods: A 50 patients of prediabetes were enrolled for this study; preformed proforma was used to collect the information, data on examination and investigations. Then these patients were subjected to nerve conduction studies. Results: Out of total 50 pre diabetic patients 9(18%) were diagnosed having peripheral neuropathy. Maximum number of pre diabetic patients were (26) in the age group 46-55 years with mean age of 44.49 years ±7.01 (S.D.). 28 (56%) were males with a female to male ratio of 1:1.27. 20% patients had complaint of polyuria, 12% presented with polydipsia, 14% of total pre diabetic patients had paresthesia on history. 6% patients had impaired vibration and position sense on clinical examination. Out of total 9 patients having evidence of Peripheral Neuropathy 6 (66.66%) were meeting all three criteria for Prediabetes while 8 (88.88%) had IFG, 7 patients had IGT. 42% of the patients were fulfilling the criteria of metabolic syndrome. 28 had raised TGs and out of them 5 (17.8%) had peripheral neuropathy. Out of 24 obese patients, 4 (16.6%) had peripheral neuropathy. Out of 9 patients with peripheral neuropathy 66.66% patients were considered to be suffering with peripheral neuropathy on the basis of sensory symptoms and 33.33% were considered on the basis of impaired vibration and position sense on examination, one patient diagnosed on the basis of nerve conduction studies. 38% were in high risk group of developing T2DM in future as per Indian diabetes risk score. Mean compound motor action potential (CMAP) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) were less in patients with peripheral neuropathy in comparison to patients without peripheral neuropathy. Conclusions: Peripheral neuropathy can occur in prediabetes though it is difficult to confirm it. Most common is small fiber neuropathy which can be diagnosed on the basis of history and examination. But by diagnosing it early in the course of prediabetes, morbidity and mortality secondary to neuropathy can be prevented

    Get PDF
Lightweight materials in general and alumunium alloys in particular are increasingly becoming important engineering materials in order to improve the sustainability aspects of engineering products. Amongst the alumunium alloys, AA7075, due to its strength to weight ratio along with other technical benefits has become a prominent material. The literature suggests that AA7075 is structurally good, however its poor tribological properties can be enhanced by introducing different reinforcements. Further, the mechanical and tribological behaviour of AA7075 relies on variety of factors such as fabrication route, quality and quantity of reinforcement, etc. In this work we summarize the work carried out in studying the various mechanical and tribological properties of AA7075. The paper will focus on the ceramic and solid lubricant reinforced AA7075 hybrid composites. A section also summarizes the applications of the alumunium alloys and composites in various engineering applications

    Get PDF
Musculoskeletal disorders amongst workers performing manual lifting tasks have become a major challenge now a days. Such problems hamper productivity of any concern to a greater extent. Industrial experts and researchers have been devising ways and means to reduce such disorders and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) agency lifting equation is one amongst such tools. NIOSH lifting equation has significantly enhanced the safety of the workers involved in manual lifting tasks. With this equation, a prior indication of musculoskeletal disorders can be obtained from the workers anthropometric details. However, till date there is no such tool available with which we can have recommendations to eliminate/reduce such disorders. In this paper an expert system on the basis of NIOSH equation has been developed to deal with the musculoskeletal problems amongst the workers involved in manual lifting tasks. The expert system is basically a computer programme developed to facilitate the use of NIOSH lifting equation. On the basis of lifting parameters, this equation computes recommended weight limit (RWL) and lifting index (LI). These outputs have been further analyzed by the programe to check existing working conditions against occupational hazards, and suggest recommendations for the safe working conditions
