    Optical Visualization of Radiative Recombination at Partial Dislocations in GaAs

    Individual dislocations in an ultra-pure GaAs epilayer are investigated with spatially and spectrally resolved photoluminescence imaging at 5~K. We find that some dislocations act as strong non-radiative recombination centers, while others are efficient radiative recombination centers. We characterize luminescence bands in GaAs due to dislocations, stacking faults, and pairs of stacking faults. These results indicate that low-temperature, spatially-resolved photoluminescence imaging can be a powerful tool for identifying luminescence bands of extended defects. This mapping could then be used to identify extended defects in other GaAs samples solely based on low-temperature photoluminescence spectra.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A clinico-radiological and pathological profile of lung cancer patients presented to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Patna)

    Background: Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers and cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The clinicopathologicalprofile of lung cancer has shown marked regional and geographical variation. Majority of the patients have locallyadvanced or disseminated disease at presentation and are not candidates for surgery. Objective: The aim of this study was toevaluate the clinico-radiological and pathological profile of lung cancer patients and difference in histopathology betweensmoker and non-smoker. We also assessed yield of the various diagnostic procedures used for confirmation of lung cancer.Materials and Methods: A total of 30 patients diagnosed between May 1, 2016, and December 31, 2016. The completedemographic profile, smoking status, clinical, radiological, and diagnostic details were recorded in the study. Data were enteredand analyzed using SPSS software. Results: A total of 30 patients (19 male and 11 female) included in our study with mean age of55.26 years. Cough (80%) and dyspnea (80%) were the most common symptom and mass (86%), pleural effusion (53.3%) was themost common radiological presentation of patients. Clubbing and hemoptysis both was found only in 8 out of 30 (26%) patients.Adenocarcinoma (46.6%) was the most common histopathological type followed by squamous cell carcinoma (16.6%) and smallcell carcinoma (13.3%). The majority of patients (60%) presented in Stage 4. Computed tomography guided biopsy had better yieldin compare to ultrasonography guided (80% vs. 70.8%). Bronchoscopic procedure had lowest yield (38.8%). Conclusion: Theclinicopathological profile of lung cancer has changed in last few years, especially in the increase in adenocarcinoma incidence,and now it is the most common cause in both smokers and non-smoker

    Recovery of Steroidal Alkaloids from Potato Peels Using Pressurized Liquid Extraction

    peer-reviewedA higher yield of glycoalkaloids was recovered from potato peels using pressurized liquid extraction (1.92 mg/g dried potato peels) compared to conventional solid–liquid extraction (0.981 mg/g dried potato peels). Response surface methodology deduced the optimal temperature and extracting solvent (methanol) for the pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) of glycoalkaloids as 80 °C in 89% methanol. Using these two optimum PLE conditions, levels of individual steroidal alkaloids obtained were of 597, 873, 374 and 75 µg/g dried potato peel for α-solanine, α-chaconine, solanidine and demissidine respectively. Separators play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of LIBs. However, due to their poor thermal stability, commercial polyolefin-based separators such as polyethylene (PE) still possess serious safety risks under abuse conditions.     Clobetasol propionate 0.025%: a topical therapeutic for skin diseases

    The most widely recommended drugs for the treatment of a variety of dermatoses are topical corticosteroids (TC). These medications are approved for the treatment of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of dermatologic disorders due to their powerful, symptom-relieving impact. Clobetasol propionate (CP) is the most popular TC used to relieve itching, redness, and edema caused by skin disorders. Topical corticosteroids exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic, and vasoconstrictive activities. Clobetasol propionate binds to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors and activates glucocorticoid receptor-mediated gene expression, resulting in the production of anti-inflammatory proteins and suppression of the production of inflammatory mediators. The effectiveness, safety, and clinical experience of utilizing CP 0.025% topical therapy for the treatment of various dermatologic disorders are discussed in this case series

    Breeding tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses

    Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop cultivated in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Low productivity in India is due to occurrence of both biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the biotic stresses, tomato leaf curl disease, bacterial wilt, early blight and Groundnut Bud Necrosis Virus disease have become serious production constraints causing considerable yield loss in the major tomato growing areas of the country. Adoption of multiple disease resistant varieties or F1 hybrids would be the most appropriate way to address these diseases. At ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru systematic breeding strategies were employed to pyramid genes for resistance to early blight, bacterial wilt and tomato leaf curl diseases and to develop advanced breeding lines& F1 hybrids with triple disease resistance. Stable source of resistance to early blight and bi-partite begomo-virus (Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi Virus) has been identified in Solanum habrochaites LA-1777. Validation with molecular markers linked to tomato leaf curl virus resistance revealed that LA-1777 carryTy2 and other putative resistant genes. Several high yielding dual purpose hybrids were also developed for fresh market and processing with high level of resistance to multiple diseases. Cherry tomato lines have also been bred for high TSS, total carotenoids, total phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, acidity and lycopene content. IIHR-249-1, IIHR-2101 (Solanum habrochaites LA-1777), IIHR- 2866 and IIHR-2864 recorded high values for quality parameters like total carotenoids, lycopene, vitamin C, total phenols, flavonoids and TSS. Drought tolerant root stock has been developed by an interspecific cross between S. habrochaites LA-1777 and S. lycopersicum (15 SB SB). Resistant sources have also been identified against Tuta absoluta, a serious insect pest reported from major tomato growing areas in the country in recent time.
