    Paramagnon dispersion in ÎČ\beta-FeSe observed by Fe LL-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

    We report an Fe LL-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the unusual superconductor ÎČ\beta-FeSe. The high energy resolution of this RIXS experiment (≈ \approx\,55 \,meV FWHM) made it possible to resolve low-energy excitations of the Fe 3d3d manifold. These include a broad peak which shows dispersive trends between 100-200 \,meV along the (π,0)(\pi,0) and (π,π)(\pi,\pi) directions of the one-Fe square reciprocal lattice, and which can be attributed to paramagnon excitations. The multi-band valence state of FeSe is among the most metallic in which such excitations have been discerned by soft x-ray RIXS

    Positionally dependent ^(15)N fraction factors in the UV photolysis of N_2O determined by high resolution FTIR spectroscopy

    Positionally dependent fractionation factors for the photolysis of isotopomers of N_2O in natural abundance have been determined by high resolution FTIR spectroscopy at three photolysis wavelengths. Fractionation factors show clear 15N position and photolysis wavelength dependence and are in qualitative agreement with theoretical models but are twice as large. The fractionation factors increase with photolysis wavelength from 193 to 211 nm, with the fractionation factors at 207.6 nm for ^(14)N^(15)N^916)O, ^(15)N^(14)N^(16)O and ^(14)N^(14)N^(18)O equal to −66.5±5‰,−27.1±6‰ and −49±10‰, respectively

    Finite temperature quantum simulation of stabilizer Hamiltonians

    We present a scheme for robust finite temperature quantum simulation of stabilizer Hamiltonians. The scheme is designed for realization in a physical system consisting of a finite set of neutral atoms trapped in an addressable optical lattice that are controllable via 1- and 2-body operations together with dissipative 1-body operations such as optical pumping. We show that these minimal physical constraints suffice for design of a quantum simulation scheme for any stabilizer Hamiltonian at either finite or zero temperature. We demonstrate the approach with application to the abelian and non-abelian toric codes.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

    Theorem on the Distribution of Short-Time Particle Displacements with Physical Applications

    The distribution of the initial short-time displacements of particles is considered for a class of classical systems under rather general conditions on the dynamics and with Gaussian initial velocity distributions, while the positions could have an arbitrary distribution. This class of systems contains canonical equilibrium of a Hamiltonian system as a special case. We prove that for this class of systems the nth order cumulants of the initial short-time displacements behave as the 2n-th power of time for all n>2, rather than exhibiting an nth power scaling. This has direct applications to the initial short-time behavior of the Van Hove self-correlation function, to its non-equilibrium generalizations the Green's functions for mass transport, and to the non-Gaussian parameters used in supercooled liquids and glasses.Comment: A less ambiguous mathematical notation for cumulants was adopted and several passages were reformulated and clarified. 40 pages, 1 figure.     Converting simulated total dry matter to fresh marketable yield for field vegetables at a range of nitrogen supply levels

    Simultaneous analysis of economic and environmental performance of horticultural crop production requires qualified assumptions on the effect of management options, and particularly of nitrogen (N) fertilisation, on the net returns of the farm. Dynamic soil-plant-environment simulation models for agro-ecosystems are frequently applied to predict crop yield, generally as dry matter per area, and the environmental impact of production. Economic analysis requires conversion of yields to fresh marketable weight, which is not easy to calculate for vegetables, since different species have different properties and special market requirements. Furthermore, the marketable part of many vegetables is dependent on N availability during growth, which may lead to complete crop failure under sub-optimal N supply in tightly calculated N fertiliser regimes or low-input systems. In this paper we present two methods for converting simulated total dry matter to marketable fresh matter yield for various vegetables and European growth conditions, taking into consideration the effect of N supply: (i) a regression based function for vegetables sold as bulk or bunching ware and (ii) a population approach for piecewise sold row crops. For both methods, to be used in the context of a dynamic simulation model, parameter values were compiled from a literature survey. Implemented in such a model, both algorithms were tested against experimental field data, yielding an Index of Agreement of 0.80 for the regression strategy and 0.90 for the population strategy. Furthermore, the population strategy was capable of reflecting rather well the effect of crop spacing on yield and the effect of N supply on product grading

    Spectral line shape of resonant four-wave mixing induced by broad-bandwidth lasers

    We present a theoretical and experimental study of the line shape of resonant four-wave mixing induced by broad-bandwidth laser radiation that revises the theory of Meacher, Smith, Ewart, and Cooper (MSEC) [Phys. Rev. A 46, 2718 (1992)]. We adopt the same method as MSEC but correct for an invalid integral used to average over the distribution of atomic velocities. The revised theory predicts a Voigt line shape composed of a homogeneous, Lorentzian component, defined by the collisional rate Γ, and an inhomogeneous, Doppler component, which is a squared Gaussian. The width of the inhomogeneous component is reduced by a factor of √2 compared to the simple Doppler width predicted by MSEC. In the limit of dominant Doppler broadening, the width of the homogeneous component is predicted to be 4Γ, whereas in the limit of dominant homogeneous broadening, the predicted width is 2Γ. An experimental measurement is reported of the line shape of the four-wave-mixing signal using a broad-bandwidth, "modeless", laser resonant with the Q1 (6) line of the A2 Σ - X2 Π(0,0) system of the hydroxyl radical. The measured widths of the Voigt components were found to be consistent with the predictions of the revised theory

    Miocene to Holocene exhumation of metamorphic crustal wedges in the NW Himalaya: evidence for tectonic extrusion coupled to fluvial erosion

    [1] The Himalayan crystalline core zone exposed along the Sutlej Valley (India) is composed of two high‐grade metamorphic gneiss sheets that were successively underthrusted and tectonically extruded, as a consequence of the foreland‐directed propagation of crustal deformation in the Indian plate margin. The High Himalayan Crystalline Sequence (HHCS) is composed of amphibolite facies to migmatitic paragneisses, metamorphosed at temperatures up to 750°C at 30 km depth between Eocene and early Miocene. During early Miocene, combined thrusting along the Main Central Thrust (MCT) and extension along the Sangla Detachment induced the rapid exhumation and cooling of the HHCS, whereas exhumation was mainly controlled by erosion since middle Miocene. The Lesser Himalayan Crystalline Sequence (LHCS) is composed of amphibolite facies para‐ and orthogneisses, metamorphosed at temperatures up to 700°C during underthrusting down to 30 km depth beneath the MCT. The LHCS cooled very rapidly since late Miocene, as a consequence of exhumation controlled by thrusting along the Munsiari Thrust and extension in the MCT hanging wall. This renewed phase of tectonic extrusion at the Himalayan front is still active, as indicated by the present‐day regional seismicity, and by hydrothermal circulation linked to elevated near‐surface geothermal gradients in the LHCS. As recently evidenced in the Himalayan syntaxes, active exhumation of deep crustal rocks along the Sutlej Valley is spatially correlated with the high erosional potential of this major trans‐Himalayan river. This correlation supports the emerging view of a positive feedback during continental collision between crustal‐scale tectono‐thermal reworking and efficient erosion along major river systems

    One hundred and fifty-one forestry workers and 151 matched office clerks were compared as to the presence of antibodies against Borelia burgdorferi, tick-borne encephalitis virus, Puumalavirus and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. Their occupational risks of being infected by Borrelia was fourfold and significant, by Puumalavirus and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus was increased but not significant. No seropositivity has been established against tick-borne encephalitis virus

    Tuning strategy for Curie-temperature enhancement in the van der Waals magnet Mn<sub>1+x</sub>Sb<sub>2−x</sub>Te<sub>4</sub>

    The van-der-Waals antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 is one of the few materials that realize the sought-after quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state and quantized surface charge transport. To assess the relevance of its isostructural analog MnSb2Te4 as a potential QAH candidate, the roles of Mn/Sb site mixing and cationic vacancies need to be clarified. Recent findings have shown that non-stoichiometry in Mn1±xSb2∓xTe4 is an efficient tuning knob to achieve a net spin-polarized state and to raise the magnetic ordering temperature well above that of MnBi2Te4. Here, we report the crystal structure, the bulk and the surface magnetism of two new Mn1+xSb2−xTe4 samples: Mn1.08Sb1.92Te4(x ≈ 0.1) with TC = 44 K, and Mn2.01Sb1.19Te4(x ≈ 1.0) with the record TC = 58 K. We quantify the site mixing comprehensively by combining various structural probes on powders and single crystals, and then employ bulk, local (electron spin resonance), and spectroscopic (x-ray magnetic circular dichroism) probes to connect these insights to the magnetism of these materials. We demonstrate that Mn over-stoichiometry up to x = 1.0, in combination with a particular Mn/Sb intermixing pattern and the increasingly three-dimensional character of the magnetic order, push the TC upwards. The tendency towards more robust ferromagnetism mediated by stronger interlayer exchange in Mn1+xSb2−xTe4 upon increasing x is confirmed by bulk magnetometry and by a series of density-functional-theory calculations of model structures with varying intermixing.</p

    Why do we need (another) special issue on gender and VET?

    The Journal of Vocational Education and Training last had a special issue on gender and vocational education and training (VET) in 2006. In the intervening 8 years, the journal has published 264 research papers, of which just 10 - that is, less than 4% - addressed the issue of gender in any substantive way. This is something of a disappointment, as editors always hope that a special issue will provoke increased discussion and debate in the journal about its theme as well as providing a focused resource. Is the problem that, compared to the effects of global labour migration flows, constantly rising youth unemployment figures or emerging skills gaps in an aging society, gender issues have lost their relevance as just one category of social inequalities among many others? This can hardly be the case, since it is obviously a most thorough-going and persistent one. Despite over 30 years of gender studies, and numerous policy initiatives to address gender inequalities, gender segregation persists in VET as well as in the labour market. Women still earn less, hold the majority of part-time contracts, tend to be stereotyped into caring and personal service work, and are largely under-represented in leadership positions. Is the problem then that there is nothing new to be said about gender and VET? We do not agree that that is the case either: gender injustice remains a central issue in VET and the labour market; and as the social, political and economic landscape changes rapidly in today's world, it is inevitable that gender inequalities are produced and reproduced in new and different ways. So we felt the need to call once again for a collection of papers dedicated specifically to this topic, and one that would reflect this evolution
