Coherence lengths for superconductivity in the two-orbital negative-U Hubbard model
We study the peculiarities of coherency in the superconductivity of
two-orbital system. The superconducting phase transition is caused here by the
on-site intra-orbital attractions (negative-U Hubbard model) and inter-orbital
pair-transfer interaction. The dependencies of critical and noncritical
correlation lengths on interaction channels and band fillings are analyzed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Acta Physica Polonica (2012) in pres
Confinement-deconfinement and universal string effects from random percolation
The 't Hooft criterion leading to confinement out of a percolating cluster of
central vortices suggests defining a novel three-dimensional gauge theory
directly on a random percolation process. Wilson loop is viewed as a counter of
topological linking with the random clusters. Beyond the percolation threshold
large Wilson loops decay with an area law and show the universal shape effects
due to flux tube fluctuations. Wilson loop correlators define a non-trivial
glueball spectrum. The crumbling of the percolating cluster when one periodic
direction narrows accounts for the finite temperature deconfinement, which
belongs to 2D percolation universality class.Comment: 3 pages, Lattice2003(topology
Thyroid ultrasonography reporting: consensus of Italian Thyroid Association (AIT), Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE), Italian Society of Ultrasonography in Medicine and Biology (SIUMB) and Ultrasound Chapter of Italian Society of Medical Radiology (SIRM)
Thyroid ultrasonography (US) is the gold standard for thyroid imaging and its widespread use is due to an optimal spatial resolution for superficial anatomic structures, a low cost and the lack of health risks. Thyroid US is a pivotal tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of autoimmune thyroid diseases, for assessing nodule size and echostructure and defining the risk of malignancy in thyroid nodules. The main limitation of US is the poor reproducibility, due to the variable experience of the operators and the different performance and settings of the equipments. Aim of this consensus statement is to standardize the report of thyroid US through the definition of common minimum requirements and a correct terminology. US patterns of autoimmune thyroid diseases are defined. US signs of malignancy in thyroid nodules are classified and scored in each nodule. We also propose a simplified nodule risk stratification, based on the predictive value of each US sign, classified and scored according to the strength of association with malignancy, but also to the estimated reproducibility among different operators
Robust Bayes-Like Estimation: Rho-Bayes estimation
We consider the problem of estimating the joint distribution of
independent random variables within the Bayes paradigm from a non-asymptotic
point of view. Assuming that admits some density with respect to a
given reference measure, we consider a density model for that
we endow with a prior distribution (with support ) and we
build a robust alternative to the classical Bayes posterior distribution which
possesses similar concentration properties around whenever it belongs to
the model . Furthermore, in density estimation, the Hellinger
distance between the classical and the robust posterior distributions tends to
0, as the number of observations tends to infinity, under suitable assumptions
on the model and the prior, provided that the model contains the
true density . However, unlike what happens with the classical Bayes
posterior distribution, we show that the concentration properties of this new
posterior distribution are still preserved in the case of a misspecification of
the model, that is when does not belong to but is close
enough to it with respect to the Hellinger distance.Comment: 68 page
Exploiting stochastic locality in lattice QCD: hadronic observables and their uncertainties
Because of the mass gap, lattice QCD simulations exhibit stochastic locality:
distant regions of the lattice fluctuate independently. There is a long history
of exploiting this to increase statistics by obtaining multiple
spatially-separated samples from each gauge field; in the extreme case, we
arrive at the master-field approach in which a single gauge field is used. Here
we develop techniques for studying hadronic observables using position-space
correlators, which are more localized, and compare with the standard
time-momentum representation. We also adapt methods for estimating the variance
of an observable from autocorrelated Monte Carlo samples to the case of
correlated spatially-separated samples.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figures, 3 table
Random percolation as a gauge theory
Three-dimensional bond or site percolation theory on a lattice can be
interpreted as a gauge theory in which the Wilson loops are viewed as counters
of topological linking with random clusters. Beyond the percolation threshold
large Wilson loops decay with an area law and show the universal shape effects
due to flux tube quantum fluctuations like in ordinary confining gauge
theories. Wilson loop correlators define a non-trivial spectrum of physical
states of increasing mass and spin, like the glueballs of ordinary gauge
theory. The crumbling of the percolating cluster when the length of one
periodic direction decreases below a critical threshold accounts for the finite
temperature deconfinement, which belongs to 2-D percolation universality class.Comment: 20 pages, 14 figure
Carbazole and simplified derivatives: Novel tools toward β-adrenergic receptors targeting
β-Adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) are G protein-coupled receptors involved in important physiological and pathological processes related to blood pressure and cardiac activity. The inhibition of cardiac β1-ARs could be beneficial in myocardial hypertrophy, ischemia and failure. Several carbazole-based compounds have been described as promising β-blockers. Herein, we investigate the capability of a carbazole derivative and three simplified indole analogs to interact with the active binding site of β1-AR by molecular docking studies. In the light of the obtained results, our compounds were tested by biological assays in H9c2 cardiomyocytes exposed to isoproterenol (ISO) to confirm their potential as β1-blockers agents, and two of them (8 and 10) showed interesting and promising properties. In particular, these compounds were effective against ISO-dependent in vitro cardiac hypertrophy, even at concentrations lower than the known β-AR antagonist propranolol. Overall, the data suggest that the indole derivatives 8 and 10 could act as potent β1-blockers and, active at low doses, could elicit limited side effects
Curvature singularity of the distributional BTZ black hole geometry
For the non-rotating BTZ black hole, the distributional curvature tensor
field is found. It is shown to have singular parts proportional to a
-distribution with support at the origin. This singularity is related,
through Einstein field equations, to a point source. Coordinate invariance and
independence on the choice of differentiable structure of the results are
addressed.Comment: Latex, 7 page
