Count Data Regression Analysis: Concepts, Overdispersion Detection, Zero-inflation Identification, and Applications with R
In this paper is proposed a straightforward model selection approach that indicates the most suitable count regression model based on relevant data characteristics. The proposed selection approach includes four of the most popular count regression models (i.e. Poisson, negative binomial, and respective zero-inflated frameworks). Moreover, it addresses two of the most relevant problems commonly found in real-world count datasets, namely overdispersion and zero-inflation. The entire selection approach may be performed using the programme language R, being all commands used throughout the paper availabe for practical purposes. It is worth mentioning that counting regression models are still not widespread within the social sciences
Variação Da Morfologia Praial E Identificação De Zonas De Erosão Acentuada (ZEA) Na Enseada Do Itapocorói - SC
The main objective of this work was to describe the morphologic variation at Itapocorói Bay – SC, and to identify the development of an erosional hot spot, through the comparison of beach profile data taken before and after the beach nourishment project done by the year of 1999, with the monthly topographic survey obtained at 2008. The results show that the beaches have distinct morphologic behavior due to the increase in the wave energy exposition of the shore. The south portion of the bay is more sheltered, and has flat beach profile slopes (between 2º and 3º) while the northern part, more exposed, shows steeper slopes (5º to 7º) and scarped profiles. Nine years after the nourishment project completed at Piçarras beach, approximately 50% of the sediment volume was lost, especially at the south end next to the river, where there is a well developed hot spot, which shows rates of volume loss of about 95%. Mitigando ataques de atraso de pulso no protocolo BSynC
Synchronization protocols in ad hoc networks, can act in regions that does not have an infrastructure. The BSynC protocol considers features of CRAHNs and promotes synchronization among nodes efficiently and reliably. However, this protocol is prone to delayed pulse attacks that cause a slow the synchronization process. This work proposes a scheme to mitigate pulse delay attacks in the BSynC synchronization protocol. The schema consists of four steps: the first collect messages, the second checks for a communication integrity, a third establishes a reliability of the network, and the fourth performs a discarding of messages without relevance. In future works we will perform simulations to evaluate the mitigation capacity of the proposed scheme
The relationship between genetic risk variants with brain structure and function in bipolar disorder: A systematic review of genetic-neuroimaging studies
Genetic-neuroimaging paradigms could provide insights regarding the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Nevertheless, findings have been inconsistent across studies. A systematic review of gene-imaging studies involving individuals with BD was conducted across electronic major databases from inception until January 9th, 2017. Forty-four studies met eligibility criteria (N=2122 BD participants). Twenty-six gene variants were investigated across candidate gene studies and 4 studies used a genome-wide association approach. Replicated evidence (i.e. in >2 studies) suggests that individuals with BD carrying the BDNF Val66Met risk allele could have reduced hippocampal volumes compared to non-carriers. This review underscores the potential of gene-neuroimaging paradigms to provide mechanistic insights for BD. However, this systematic review found a single replicated finding. Suggestions to improve the reproducibility of this emerging field are provided, including the adoption of a trans-diagnostic approac
The Brazilian Developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (BRAMS 5.2): An Integrated Environmental Model Tuned for Tropical Areas
We present a new version of the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System where different previous versions for weather, chemistry and carbon cycle were unified in a single integrated software system. The new version also has a new set of state-of-the-art physical parameterizations and greater computational parallel and memory usage efficiency. Together with the description of the main features are examples of the quality of the transport scheme for scalars, radiative fluxes on surface and model simulation of rainfall systems over South America in different spatial resolutions using a scale-aware convective parameterization. Besides, the simulation of the diurnal cycle of the convection and carbon dioxide concentration over the Amazon Basin, as well as carbon dioxide fluxes from biogenic processes over a large portion of South America are shown. Atmospheric chemistry examples present model performance in simulating near-surface carbon monoxide and ozone in Amazon Basin and Rio de Janeiro megacity. For tracer transport and dispersion, it is demonstrated the model capabilities to simulate the volcanic ash 3-d redistribution associated with the eruption of a Chilean volcano. Then, the gain of computational efficiency is described with some details. BRAMS has been applied for research and operational forecasting mainly in South America. Model results from the operational weather forecast of BRAMS on 5 km grid spacing in the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies, INPE/Brazil, since 2013 are used to quantify the model skill of near surface variables and rainfall. The scores show the reliability of BRAMS for the tropical and subtropical areas of South America. Requirements for keeping this modeling system competitive regarding on its functionalities and skills are discussed. At last, we highlight the relevant contribution of this work on the building up of a South American community of model developers

Genome-resolved metagenomic analysis of Great Amazon Reef System sponge-associated Latescibacterota bacteria and their potential contributions to the host sponge and reef
The Great Amazon Reef System (GARS) is an extensive biogenic reef influenced by a plume layer of sediments. This creates an extreme environment where light is reduced, thus affecting physicochemical properties as well as living organisms such as sponges and their microbiomes. The sponge’s microbiome has numerous ecological roles, like participation in biogeochemical cycles and host nutrition, helping the sponge thrive and contributing to the ecosystem. Also, sponges and sponge-associated microorganisms are rich sources of bioactive compounds, and their products are applied in different areas, including textile, pharmaceutical, and food industries. In this context, metagenome-assembled genomes (MAG), obtained from GARS sponges microbiota, were analyzed to predict their ecological function and were prospected for biotechnological features. Thus, in this work, tissues of GARS sponges were collected, their metagenomes were sequenced and assembled, and 1,054 MAGs were recovered. Ten of those MAGs were selected based on their taxonomic classification in the candidate phylum Latescibacterota and this group’s abundance in GARS sponges. The workflow consisted of MAG’s quality definition, taxonomic classification, metabolic reconstruction, and search for bioactive compounds. Metabolic reconstruction from medium to high-quality MAGs revealed genes related to degradation and synthesis pathways, indicating functions that may be performed by GARS sponge-associated Latescibacterota. Heterotrophy, a recurring attribute in Latescibacterota that might be crucial for GARS sponge holobiont nutrition, was verified by the presence of genes related to respiration and fermentation. Also, the analyzed bacteria may contribute to the host’s survival in multiple ways, including host protection via defense systems; aid in nutrient consumption by breaking complex substrates and producing essential nutrients like vitamins and certain amino acids; and detoxification of mercury, arsenic, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. Additionally, genes linked to persistent organic pollutant degradation, including glyphosate, and biogeochemical cycles reactions, such as ammonification, sulfate reduction, thiosulfate disproportionation, phosphorus remineralization, and complex organic matter degradation, were identified, suggesting the participation of these Latescibacterota in bioremediation and nutrient cycling. Finally, the investigated MAGs contain genes for numerous bioactive compounds, including industrial enzymes, secondary metabolites, and biologically active peptides, which may have biotechnological value
Supersymmetry Without Prejudice
We begin an exploration of the physics associated with the general
CP-conserving MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation, the pMSSM. The 19 soft SUSY
breaking parameters in this scenario are chosen so as to satisfy all existing
experimental and theoretical constraints assuming that the WIMP is a
conventional thermal relic, ie, the lightest neutralino. We scan this parameter
space twice using both flat and log priors for the soft SUSY breaking mass
parameters and compare the results which yield similar conclusions. Detailed
constraints from both LEP and the Tevatron searches play a particularly
important role in obtaining our final model samples. We find that the pMSSM
leads to a much broader set of predictions for the properties of the SUSY
partners as well as for a number of experimental observables than those found
in any of the conventional SUSY breaking scenarios such as mSUGRA. This set of
