    D2.4 Organise DESIR final event

    The DESIR Final Event took place in Zagreb on 6-7 November 2019, alongside the DARIAH General Assembly. The DESIR Final Event brought together the whole consortium and involved several Bodies of the ERIC to maximise the impact of the event. The aim of the meeting was two-fold. First, it was to opportunity to summarise the activities conducted throughout the project and showcase results towards the DARIAH community. Secondly, it proposed a wider discussion over sustainability and funding models with National Representatives prior to the General Assembly.Overall, 57 participants attended the event. The schedule has been structured to present the outcomes of each Work Package. As the project DESIR was divided into an evolving 6-dimensional process, main results can be summarised as follows:Dissemination and Innovation: the aim of this Work Package was to ensure a continuous dissemination of DARIAH service improvements, activities and research results within the relevant communities, academic stakeholders and other interested parties. Furthermore, the Work Package was in charge of organising main dissemination activities during the project and the DARIAH Beyond Europe workshop series (Stanford University, Library of Congress, National Library of Australia).Growth: this Work Package was concerned with the enlargement of the DARIAH membership targeting six countries (Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom). Membership could only be achieved in Czech Republic, the application was submitted and ratified by the General Assembly in November 2019. Nevertheless, in other countries, collaboration with DARIAH has been greatly strengthened and significant progress regarding DARIAH membership has been achieved.Technology: the Work Package delivered three demonstrators focused on bibliographical metadata. The demonstrators show the usage of tools for bibliographical metadata in various stages of the research process, e.g. extraction of entities, the collection and sorting of citations, visualisation of selected aspects of the data. These demonstrators were built with the involvement of the community of researchers through two Code Sprints organised in Berlin.Robustness: the aim of this Work Package was to strengthen the organisational structure of DARIAH. The activities undertaken had a multifaceted nature: the relationship with the user community was improved through the implementation of a centralised helpdesk; preliminary work towards the Marketplace was conducted; the EURISE Network (European Research Infrastructure Software Engineers' Network) was established with CLARIN and CESSDA; finally a renewed business plan building on existing strategic documents was developed.Trust: this Work Package contributed to DARIAH’s long-term sustainability by measuring acceptance and impact of DARIAH in new cross-disciplinary communities and core groups through a survey, in-depth qualitative interviews and strategic meetings. The analysedinformation collected from each source led to a recommendations and community engagement tool developed to share and translate the recommendations dataset for a broader audience.Teaching: the work carried out during the course of the project led to the implementation of a discovery framework and hosting platform for DARIAH learning resources, DARIAH-Campus. The platform was officially launched during the event. The goal of DARIAH-Campus is to widen access to open, inclusive, high-quality learning materials that aim to enhance creativity, skills, technology and knowledge in the digitally-enabled arts and humanities

    Cytosolic Crowding Drives the Dynamics of Both Genome and Cytosol in Escherichia coli Challenged with Sub-lethal Antibiotic Treatments.

    In contrast to their molecular mode of action, the system-level effect of antibiotics on cells is only beginning to be quantified. Molecular crowding is expected to be a relevant global regulator, which we explore here through the dynamic response phenotypes in Escherichia coli, at single-cell resolution, under sub-lethal regimes of different classes of clinically relevant antibiotics, acting at very different levels in the cell. We measure chromosomal mobility through tracking of fast (<15 s timescale) fluctuations of fluorescently tagged chromosomal loci, and we probe the fluidity of the cytoplasm by tracking cytosolic aggregates. Measuring cellular density, we show how the overall levels of macromolecular crowding affect both quantities, regardless of antibiotic-specific effects. The dominant trend is a strong correlation between the effects in different parts of the chromosome and between the chromosome and cytosol, supporting the concept of an overall global role of molecular crowding in cellular physiology.UKRI grant EP/T002778/

    Organize training measures, including workshops in accession candidate countries

    The DESIR project sets out to strengthen the sustainability of DARIAH and firmly establish it as a long-term leader and partner within arts and humanities communities. The project was designed to address six core infrastructural sustainability dimensions and one of these was dedicated to training and education, which is also one of the four pillars identified in the DARIAH Strategic Plan 2019-2026. In the framework of Work Package 7: Teaching, DESIR organised dedicated workshops in the six DARIAH accession countries (Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) to introduce them to the DARIAH infrastructure and related services, and to develop methodological research skills. The topic of each workshop was decided by accession countries representatives according to the training needs of the national communities of researchers in the (Digital) Humanities. Training topics varied greatly: on the one hand, some workshops had the objective to introduce participants to specific methodological research skills; on the other hand, a different approach was used, and some events focused on the infrastructural role of training and education.     Efficiency Enhancement of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives by on-Line Loss Minimization Approaches

    In this paper, a new loss minimization control algorithm for inverter-fed permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which allows for the reduction of the power losses of the electric drive without penalty on its dynamic performance, is analyzed, experimentally realized, and validated. In particular, after a brief recounting of two loss minimization control strategies, namely, the "search control" and the "loss-model control," both a new modified dynamic model of the PMSM (which takes into account the iron losses) and an innovative "loss-model" control strategy are presented. Experimental tests on a specific PMSM drive employing the proposed loss minimization algorithm have been performed, aiming to validate the actual implementation. The main results of these tests confirm that the dynamic performance of the drive is maintained, and in small motors enhancement up to 3.5% of the efficiency can be reached in comparison with the PMSM drive equipped with a more traditional control strategy

    The Gaia AVU-GSR parallel solver: preliminary porting with OpenACC parallelization language of a LSQR-based application in perspective of exascale systems

    The Gaia Astrometric Verification Unit-Global Sphere Reconstruction (AVU-GSR) Parallel Solver aims to find the positions and the proper motions for ~10^8 stars in our galaxy, besides the attitude and the instrumental settings of the Gaia satellite, and the global parameter of the post Newtonian formalism. To find these parameters, the code solves a system of linear equations, × = , where the coefficient matrix is large, containing ~10^11 x 10^8 elements, and sparse. The system of equations is solved with a customized implementation of the iterative preconditioned (PC)-LSQR algorithm and is parallelized on the CPU with MPI+OpenMP, where the computation related to different horizontal portions of the coefficient matrix is assigned to different MPI processes and it is further parallelized on the OpenMP threads. To improve the code performance, we explored the feasibility of a porting of this application on a GPU environment, by replacing the OpenMP directives with the OpenACC correspondent ones. In this preliminary porting, the ~95% of the data is copied from the host (CPU) to the device (GPU) before the entire cycle of iterations, making the code compute bound rather than data-transfers bound. The OpenACC code accelerates of a factor of ~1.5 compared to the OpenMP code. The OpenACC application runs on multiple GPUs and it was tested on the CINECA SuperComputer Marconi100, with 4 V100 GPUs per node having 16 GB of memory each. A following porting, where the OpenACC language is replaced with CUDA, was performed, optimizing the preliminary porting with OpenACC. The CUDA code has just been put into production on Marconi100 and we plan to run it on the future pre-exascale platform Leonardo of CINECA, with 4 next-generation A100 GPUs per node

    Aerodynamic Benchmarking of the Deepwind Design

    AbstractThe aerodynamic benchmarking for the DeepWind rotor is conducted comparing different rotor geometries and solutions and keeping the comparison as fair as possible. The objective for the benchmarking is to find the most suitable configuration in order to maximize the power production and minimize the blade solicitation and the cost of energy. Different parameters are considered for the benchmarking study. The DeepWind blade is characterized by a shape similar to the Troposkien geometry but asymmetric between the top and bottom parts: this shape is considered as a fixed parameter in the benchmarking process.The number of blades in the analysis is varied from 1 to 4. In order to keep the comparison fair among the different configurations, the solidity is kept constant and, therefore, the chord length reduced. A second comparison is conducted considering different blade profiles belonging the symmetric NACA airfoil family

    DARIAH Beyond Europe

    International audienceDARIAH, the digital humanities infrastructure with origins and an organisational home in Europe, is nearing the completion of its implementation phase. The significant investment from the European Commission and member countries has yielded a robust set of technical and social infrastructures, ranging from working groups, various registries, pedagogical materials, and software to support diverse approaches to digital humanities scholarship. While the funding and leadership of DARIAH to date has come from countries in, or contiguous with, Europe, the needs that drive its technical and social development are widely shared within the international digital humanities community beyond Europe. Scholars on every continent would benefit from well-supported technical tools and platforms, directories for facilitating access to information and resources, and support for working groups.The DARIAH Beyond Europe workshop series, organised and financed under the umbrella of the DESIR project (“DARIAH ERIC Sustainability Refined,” 2017–2019, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program), convened three meetings between September 2018 and March 2019 in the United States and Australia. These workshops served as fora for cross-cultural exchange, and introduced many non-European DH scholars to DARIAH; each of the workshops included a significant delegation from various DARIAH bodies, together with a larger number of local presenters and participants. The local contexts for these workshops were significantly different in their embodiment of research infrastructures: on the one hand, in the U.S., a private research university (Stanford) and the de facto national library (the Library of Congress), both in a country with a history of unsuccessful national-scale infrastructure efforts; and in Australia, a system which has invested substantially more in coordinated national research infrastructure in science and technology, but very little on a national scale in the humanities and arts. Europe is in many respects ahead of both host countries in terms of its research infrastructure ecosystem both at the national and pan-European levels.The Stanford workshop had four main topics of focus: corpus management; text and image analysis; geohumanities; and music, theatre, and sound studies. As the first of the workshops, the Stanford group also took the lead in proposing next steps toward exploring actionable “DARIAH beyond Europe” initiatives, including the beginnings of a blog shared among participants from all the workshops, extra-European use of DARIAH’s DH Course Registry, and non-European participation in DARIAH Working Groups.The overall theme of the Library of Congress workshop was “Collections as Data,” building on a number of U.S.-based initiatives exploring how to enhance researcher engagement with digital collections through computationally-driven research. In Washington, D.C., the knowledge exchange sessions focussed on digitised newspapers and text analysis, infrastructural challenges for public humanities, and the use of web-archives in DH research. As at Stanford, interconnecting with DARIAH Working Groups was of core interest to participants, and a new Working Group was proposed to explore global access and use of digitised historical newspapers. A further important outcome was the agreement to explore collaboration between the U.S.-based “Collections as Data” initiatives and the Heritage Data Reuse Charter in Europe. The third and final workshop in the series took place in March 2019 in Australia, hosted by the National Library of Australia in Canberra. Convened by the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AAH), together with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and DARIAH, this event was co-located with the Academy’s second annual Humanities, Arts and Culture Data Summit. The first day of the event, targeted at research leadership and policy makers, was intended to explore new horizons for data-driven humanities and arts research, digital cultural collections and research infrastructure. The two subsequent days focused on engaging with a wide variety of communities, including (digital) humanities researchers and cultural heritage professionals. Organised around a series of Knowledge Exchange Sessions, combined with research-led lightning talks, the participants spoke in detail about how big ideas can be implemented practically on the ground. This poster reflects on the key outcomes and future directions arising from these three workshops, and considers what it might look like for DARIAH to be adopted as a fundamental DH infrastructure in a complex variety of international, national, and regional contexts, with diverse funding models, resources, needs, and expectations. One major outcome of all workshops was the shared recognition that, in spite of extensive funding, planning, and goodwill, these workshops were not nearly global enough in their reach: most importantly they were not inclusive of the Global South. Our new DARIAH beyond Europe community has a strong shared commitment to address this gap
