    Key ecological sites of Hamilton City: Volume 1

    Ecological sites of significance previously identified in 2000 were reviewed in 2011. Natural vegetation in areas acquired by the city since 2000 was also surveyed to identify any new key sites. In total seventy key sites that met the Waikato Regional Council Regional Policy Statement criteria for ecological significance were identified across Hamilton City. Of the original key sites, the total area covered by sites, average site size and overall quality of sites had increased between the 2000 and 2011 surveys. This was due to restoration efforts across the city by Hamilton City Council and the community. Vegetation restoration efforts have had other biodiversity and ecological benefits such as providing additional habitat for the city’s increasing tui population. Key sites are not spread evenly across the city or across landform types. Most key sites are either in gullies or adjoining the Waikato River. Less than 1% of urban alluvial plains and peat bogs are key sites. Two sites on private land have degraded and no longer meet the ecological significance criteria in 2011. The current survey utilised a standard methodology focused on vegetation types. There will be other significant sites not identified including sites with significant fauna values but a detailed and costly survey would be required to identify all such sites. The 1.5% of the city area covered by key sites is well below the 10% minimum recommended to prevent biodiversity decline in urban areas. Areas where vegetation restoration has begun in the city have the potential to expand existing key sites or develop new sites if council and community efforts continue in the future. The Council and its restoration partners should continue to seek ways of increasing native vegetation cover in Hamilton City and restoration of the distinctive gully landform remains the best option

    Volatiles from biofumigant plants have a direct effect on carpogenic germination of sclerotia and mycelial growth of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

    Aims Sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum survive in soil and germinate to produce apothecia which release airborne ascospores. Current control methods rely predominantly on the use of fungicides to kill ascospores. The aim of this research was to identify potential biofumigation treatments which suppress sclerotial germination, providing a potential alternative and long-term approach to disease management. Methods Microcosm and in vitro experiments were conducted using dried and milled plant material from six different biofumigant crop plants to determine effects on carpogenic germination of sclerotia and mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum. Results All biofumigant plants significantly reduced germination of S. sclerotiorum sclerotia in the microcosm experiments, but were less effective against larger sclerotia. In vitro experiments showed a direct effect of biofumigant volatiles on both the mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum, and carpogenic germination of sclerotia, where the most effective treatment was B. juncea ‘Vittasso’. Conclusions It was clear from this study that biofumigant crop plants have potential as part of an integrated disease management system for control of S. sclerotiorum. The microcosm experiments described here provide a straightforward and reliable screening method for evaluating different biofumigants for activity

    Caregiver experiences of paediatric inpatient cardiac services: A qualitative systematic review

    Background: Advances in paediatric care have contributed to an increasing survival of children with complex heart disease. Yet, life-saving management demands prolonged inpatient admissions, which contribute to emotional and psychological distress for parents and other caregivers in a role of main custody. Aim: The purpose of this study was to identify, appraise and synthesise qualitative studies exploring caregivers’ experiences of paediatric inpatient cardiac services, generating an understanding of their needs in hospital and informing priorities for change in healthcare delivery. Methods: Searches were conducted in Medline, Allied and Complimentary Medicine Database, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, EMCARE, Scopus, PsychINFO, Proquest, OpenGrey and ETHOs from 2008–2019, reflecting recent advances in cardiac healthcare. Articles were selected using predetermined eligibility criteria dictating qualitative inquiry into caregiver perspectives whilst their child received hospital-based interventions for heart disease. All eligible studies underwent quality appraisal. Framework synthesis was used to analyse and summarise findings. Results: Twenty-seven studies involving 689 caregivers from 11 countries were included. Three overarching themes were identified: ‘emotional capacity to care’, ‘practicalities of caring’, and ‘the bigger picture of caring’. Conclusions: Through analysis and summary of qualitative primary research, this review captures the emotional challenges that caregivers face and practicalities of undertaking a caregiver role, whilst looking after their child with heart disease in hospital. The results widen the context of the caregiver role, encompassing the whole family unit beyond the hospital environment. This review exposes the impact of these challenges on caregiver competence, wellbeing and attachment to their unwell child, informing priorities for development of family-centred paediatric inpatient cardiac services

    Software tool for visualization of a probabilistic map of the epileptogenic zone from seizure semiologies

    Around one third of epilepsies are drug-resistant. For these patients, seizures may be reduced or cured by surgically removing the epileptogenic zone (EZ), which is the portion of the brain giving rise to seizures. If noninvasive data are not sufficiently lateralizing or localizing, the EZ may need to be localized by precise implantation of intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) electrodes. The choice of iEEG targets is influenced by clinicians' experience and personal knowledge of the literature, which leads to substantial variations in implantation strategies across different epilepsy centers. The clinical diagnostic pathway for surgical planning could be supported and standardized by an objective tool to suggest EZ locations, based on the outcomes of retrospective clinical cases reported in the literature. We present an open-source software tool that presents clinicians with an intuitive and data-driven visualization to infer the location of the symptomatogenic zone, that may overlap with the EZ. The likely EZ is represented as a probabilistic map overlaid on the patient's images, given a list of seizure semiologies observed in that specific patient. We demonstrate a case study on retrospective data from a patient treated in our unit, who underwent resective epilepsy surgery and achieved 1-year seizure freedom after surgery. The resected brain structures identified as EZ location overlapped with the regions highlighted by our tool, demonstrating its potential utility

    Diversidade de besouros aquáticos (Insecta: Coleoptera) em um trecho do Rio Marambaia, Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

    Coleoptera é a ordem de insetos mais diversa, incluindo mais de 400 mil espécies popularmente conhecidas como besouros. Pelo menos 13 mil espécies de 37 famílias são consideradas aquáticas, das quais 16 famílias são registradas no Brasil. O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar o levantamento dos besouros aquáticos ocorrentes em um trecho do Rio Marambaia, Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Um total de 456 espécimes foi obtido na área de estudo, representando os seguintes 12 gêneros e seis famílias: Copelatus, Cybister, Desmopachria, Hydaticus e Rhantus (Dytiscidae); Heterelmis (Elmidae); Gyretes (Gyrinidae); Derallus, Chasmogenus e Tropisternus (Hydrophilidae); Pheneps (Psephenidae); e Iapir (Torridincolidae). Dentre eles, os gêneros Copelatus e Cybister, e as espécies de Hydrophilidae, Chasmogenus fluminensis Clarkson & Ferreira-Jr; Derallus angustus Sharp; Tropisternus apicipalpis Chevrolat; e Tropisternus variolosus Hansen, são aqui registrados pela primeira vez no município de Mangaratiba- RJ. Os registros de Cybister e T. apicipalpis também são os primeiros no Estado do Rio de Janeiro

    Probabilistic landscape of seizure semiology localising values

    Semiology describes the evolution of symptoms and signs during epileptic seizures and contributes to the evaluation of individuals with focal drug-resistant epilepsy for curative resection. Semiology varies in complexity from elementary sensorimotor seizures arising from primary cortex to complex behaviours and automatisms emerging from distributed cerebral networks. Detailed semiology interpreted by expert epileptologists may point towards the likely site of seizure onset, but this process is subjective. No study has captured the variances in semiological localising values in a data-driven manner to allow objective and probabilistic determinations of implicated networks and nodes. We curated an open dataset from the epilepsy literature, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, linking semiology to hierarchical brain localisations. A total of 11230 datapoints were collected from 4643 patients across 309 articles, labelled using ground-truths (postoperative seizure-freedom, concordance of imaging and neurophysiology, and/or invasive EEG) and a designation method that distinguished between semiologies arising from a predefined cortical region and descriptions of neuroanatomical localisations responsible for generating a particular semiology. This allowed us to mitigate temporal lobe publication bias by filtering studies that preselected patients based on prior knowledge of their seizure-foci. Using this dataset, we describe the probabilistic landscape of semiological localising values as forest plots at the resolution of seven major brain regions: temporal, frontal, cingulate, parietal, occipital, insula, and hypothalamus, and five temporal subregions. We evaluated the intrinsic value of any one semiology over all other ictal manifestations. For example, epigastric auras implicated the temporal lobe with 83% probability when not accounting for the publication bias that favoured temporal lobe epilepsies. Unbiased results for a prior distribution of cortical localisations revised the prevalence of temporal lobe epilepsies from 66% to 44%. Therefore, knowledge about the presence of epigastric auras updates localisation to the temporal lobe with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.4 (CI_{95%} [1.9, 2.9]; and specifically, mesial temporal structures OR 2.8[2.3, 2.9]), attesting the value of epigastric auras. As a further example, although head version is thought to implicate the frontal lobes, it did not add localising value compared to the prior distribution of cortical localisations (OR 0.9[0.7, 1.2]). Objectification of the localising values of the twelve most common semiologies provides a complementary view of brain dysfunction to that of lesion-deficit mappings, as instead of linking brain regions to phenotypic-deficits, semiological phenotypes are linked back to brain sources. This work enables coupling of seizure-propagation with ictal-manifestations, and clinical support algorithms for localising seizure phenotypes

    The thermal emission of the exoplanets WASP-1b and WASP-2b

    We present a comparative study of the thermal emission of the transiting exoplanets WASP-1b and WASP-2b using the Spitzer Space Telescope. The two planets have very similar masses but suffer different levels of irradiation and are predicted to fall either side of a sharp transition between planets with and without hot stratospheres. WASP-1b is one of the most highly irradiated planets studied to date. We measure planet/star contrast ratios in all four of the IRAC bands for both planets (3.6-8.0um), and our results indicate the presence of a strong temperature inversion in the atmosphere of WASP-1b, particularly apparent at 8um, and no inversion in WASP-2b. In both cases the measured eclipse depths favor models in which incident energy is not redistributed efficiently from the day side to the night side of the planet. We fit the Spitzer light curves simultaneously with the best available radial velocity curves and transit photometry in order to provide updated measurements of system parameters. We do not find significant eccentricity in the orbit of either planet, suggesting that the inflated radius of WASP-1b is unlikely to be the result of tidal heating. Finally, by plotting ratios of secondary eclipse depths at 8um and 4.5um against irradiation for all available planets, we find evidence for a sharp transition in the emission spectra of hot Jupiters at an irradiation level of 2 x 10^9 erg/s/cm^2.     Efficiency and safety of varying the frequency of whole blood donation (INTERVAL): a randomised trial of 45 000 donors

    Background: Limits on the frequency of whole blood donation exist primarily to safeguard donor health. However, there is substantial variation across blood services in the maximum frequency of donations allowed. We compared standard practice in the UK with shorter inter-donation intervals used in other countries. Methods: In this parallel group, pragmatic, randomised trial, we recruited whole blood donors aged 18 years or older from 25 centres across England, UK. By use of a computer-based algorithm, men were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to 12-week (standard) versus 10-week versus 8-week inter-donation intervals, and women were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to 16-week (standard) versus 14-week versus 12-week intervals. Participants were not masked to their allocated intervention group. The primary outcome was the number of donations over 2 years. Secondary outcomes related to safety were quality of life, symptoms potentially related to donation, physical activity, cognitive function, haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations, and deferrals because of low haemoglobin. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN24760606, and is ongoing but no longer recruiting participants. Findings: 45 263 whole blood donors (22 466 men, 22 797 women) were recruited between June 11, 2012, and June 15, 2014. Data were analysed for 45 042 (99·5%) participants. Men were randomly assigned to the 12-week (n=7452) versus 10-week (n=7449) versus 8-week (n=7456) groups; and women to the 16-week (n=7550) versus 14-week (n=7567) versus 12-week (n=7568) groups. In men, compared with the 12-week group, the mean amount of blood collected per donor over 2 years increased by 1·69 units (95% CI 1·59–1·80; approximately 795 mL) in the 8-week group and by 0·79 units (0·69–0·88; approximately 370 mL) in the 10-week group (p<0·0001 for both). In women, compared with the 16-week group, it increased by 0·84 units (95% CI 0·76–0·91; approximately 395 mL) in the 12-week group and by 0·46 units (0·39–0·53; approximately 215 mL) in the 14-week group (p<0·0001 for both). No significant differences were observed in quality of life, physical activity, or cognitive function across randomised groups. However, more frequent donation resulted in more donation-related symptoms (eg, tiredness, breathlessness, feeling faint, dizziness, and restless legs, especially among men [for all listed symptoms]), lower mean haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations, and more deferrals for low haemoglobin (p<0·0001 for each) than those observed in the standard frequency groups. Interpretation: Over 2 years, more frequent donation than is standard practice in the UK collected substantially more blood without having a major effect on donors' quality of life, physical activity, or cognitive function, but resulted in more donation-related symptoms, deferrals, and iron deficiency.     DRAFTS: A Deep, Rapid Archival Flare Transient Search in the Galactic Bulge

    We utilize the Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Planet Search (SWEEPS) HST/ACS dataset for a Deep Rapid Archival Flare Transient Search (DRAFTS) to constrain the flare rate toward the older stellar population in the Galactic bulge. During 7 days of monitoring 229,293 stars brighter than V=29.5, we find evidence for flaring activity in 105 stars between V=20 and V=28. We divided the sample into non-variable stars and variable stars whose light curves contain large-scale variability. The flare rate on variable stars is \sim 700 times that of non-variable stars, with a significant correlation between the amount of underlying stellar variability and peak flare amplitude. The flare energy loss rates are generally higher than those of nearby well-studied single dMe flare stars. The distribution of proper motions is consistent with the flaring stars being at the distance and age of the Galactic bulge. If they are single dwarfs, they span a range of \approx 1.0 - 0.25M\odot. A majority of the flaring stars exhibit periodic photometric modulations with P <3d. If these are tidally locked magnetically active binary systems, their fraction in the bulge is enhanced by a factor of \sim20 compared to the local value. These stars may be useful for placing constraints on the angular momentum evolution of cool close binary stars. Our results expand the type of stars studied for flares in the optical band, and suggest that future sensitive optical time-domain studies will have to contend with a larger sample of flaring stars than the M dwarf flare stars usually considered.Comment: accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
