Dostoevsky, Raskolnikov, and Freedom in Crime and Punishment
An analysis of the character of Raskolnikov in Dostoevsky\u27s Crime and Punishment and his journey towards a truer understanding of freedom. This paper comments on \u27freedom\u27 as understood by St. Thomas Aquinas and Aristotle, and applies this view of freedom to the characters of Raskolnikov, Sonya, Svidrigailov and Porfiry. The paper shows how the Thomistic-Aristotelian view of freedom is prevalent in this work by Dostoevsky
The Future of Soft Money in Federal Elections: The 527 Reform Act of 2005 and the First Amendment
President George W. Bush signed the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002 (“BCRA”) into law on March 27, 2002, and when it became law on November 6, 2002, BCRA marked the first significant revision of the federal laws controlling the financing of campaigns for federal office since the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (“FECA”). Title I of BCRA banned national parties and officeholders from raising and spending “soft money.” Soft money can be defined simply as contributions that are not subject to FECA’s contribution regulations while “hard money” refers to contributions that do fall under FECA’s domain. FECA established a series of mandatory limits on contributions to candidates and mandatory ceilings on expenditures. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), one of the bill’s co-sponsors who has fought for significant campaign finance reform for more than half a decade, hoped the law would “restore the public’s faith in government.” President Bush hailed BCRA by stating that “[a]ll of the American electorate will benefit from these measures to strengthen our democracy.
-Colored Graphs - a Review of Sundry Properties
We review the combinatorial, topological, algebraic and metric properties
supported by -colored graphs, with a focus on those that are pertinent
to the study of tensor model theories. We show how to extract a limiting
continuum metric space from this set of graphs and detail properties of this
limit through the calculation of exponents at criticality

Sherley v. Sebelius: Stem Cells and the Uneasy Interplay Between the Federal Bench and the Lab Bench
After Barack Obama\u27s election to the presidency, he promised that one of his top priorities in office would be to relieve the restrictions initiated by President George W. Bush on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. President Obama followed through on his promise, but the celebrations in the nation\u27s research labs were short-lived. Anti-abortion advocates and other scientists working in the field that would allegedly be out-competed in the federal funding arena brought a legal challenge to the new government position. The struggle culminated in August 2010 with a federal district court issuing a preliminary injunction to halt the new funding initiative. Although the government successfully appealed for a stay on the injunction pending arguments in the Court of Appeals, the decision has paralyzed research in the field. This iBrief argues that the injunction was wrongly granted, predicts how higher courts might treat the case, and suggests that the proper forum for addressing this controversy lies within the scientific community, not the judiciary
Decline in Relative Abundance of Hippodamia convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Fall Shoreline Aggregations on Western Lake Superior
In the 1970s, migratory coccinellid aggregations on western Lake Superior shorelines consisted of over 90% Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville. In 2014, the alien Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) accounted for over 80% of shoreline coccinellid aggregations and H. convergens declined to less than 10% of the total. Additional work is needed to elucidate the extent and cause of the decline of H. convergens in western Lake Superior shoreline aggregations
