    Recommendation domains for pond aquaculture: country case study: development and status of freshwater aquaculture in Malawi

    This monograph is a result of a 3-year project to produce a decision-support toolkit with supporting databases and case studies to help researchers, planners and extension agents working on freshwater pond aquaculture. The purpose of the work was to provide tools and information to help practitioners identify places and conditions where pond aquaculture can benefit the poor, both as producers and as consumers of fish. This monograph is the case study for Malawi. Written in three parts, it describes the historical background, practices, stakeholder profiles, production levels, economic and institutional environment, policy issues, and prospects for aquaculture in the country. First, it documents the history and current status of the aquaculture in the country. Second, it assesses the technologies and approaches that either succeeded or failed to foster aquaculture development and discusses why.     Tilapia in Australia – Development of management strategies for the control and eradication of feral tilapia populations in Australia

    This report presents a culmination of different research projects on two species of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus and Tilapia mariae) and provides recommendations for the future management and research of these pest fish. Feral populations of O. mossambicus and T. mariae are now widely distributed in tropical northeastern Queensland, with O. mossambicus also occurring in southeastern Queensland and river systems of Western Australia. O. mossambicus is known to have existed in impoundments in southeastern Queensland, as well as urban drains and ornamental ponds in the Townsville region of north Queensland from about the late 1970s, while T. mariae became established in some easternflowing tropical streams by the early 1990s.     Variability in the growth, feeding and condition of barramundi (Lates calcarifer Bloch) in a northern Australian coastal river and impoundment

    Lates calcarifer supports important fisheries throughout tropical Australia. Community-driven fish stocking has resulted in the creation of impoundment fisheries and supplemental stocking of selected wild riverine populations. Using predominantly tag-recapture methods, condition assessment and stomach flushing techniques, this study compared the growth of stocked and wild L. calcarifer in a tropical Australian river (Johnstone River) and stocked fish in a nearby impoundment (Lake Tinaroo). Growth of L. calcarifer in the Johnstone River appeared resource-limited, with juvenile fish in its lower freshwater reaches feeding mainly on small aytid shrimp and limited quantities of fish. Growth was probably greatest in estuarine and coastal areas than in the lower freshwater river. Fish in Lake Tinaroo, where prey availability was greater, grew faster than either wild or stocked fish in the lower freshwater areas of the Johnstone River. Growth of L. calcarifer was highly seasonal with marked declines in the cooler months. This was reflected in both stomach fullness and the percentage of fish with empty stomachs but the condition of L. calcarifer was similar across most sites. In areas where food resources appear stretched, adverse effects on resident L. calcarifer populations and their attendant prey species should be minimised through cessation of, or more conservative, stocking practices

    The Barron River drains into the Coral Sea, near Cairns, Queensland (Australia) and in comparison to other Queensland wet tropics streams, it has a relatively large catchment area of about 219,000 ha. The catchment has high fish diversity, with at least 209 estuarine and freshwater species and the Barron River Estuary is a spawning and nursery ground for a variety of fish and prawn species and supports a wide range of commercial and recreational fish species. The variance and abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates can provide valuable information on the ecological condition of a river system. Overall, the macroinvertebrate populations indicated a relatively healthy system although nutrient enrichment may be causing degradation. Reserves such as existing Fish Habitat Areas and a proposed marine park will provide ongoing protection for coastal wetlands. A series of potential management issues for the catchment and future monitoring strategies are discussed

    Using optical spectroscopy to map the geometry and structure of the irradiated accretion discs in low-mass X-ray binaries:the pilot study of MAXI J0637-430

    The recurring transient outbursts in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) provide us with strong test-beds for constraining the poorly understood accretion process. While impossible to image directly, phase-resolved spectroscopy can provide a powerful diagnostic to study their highly complex, time-dependent accretion discs. We present an 8-month long multi-wavelength (UV, optical, X-ray) monitoring campaign of the new candidate black hole LMXB MAXI J0637−-430 throughout its 2019/2020 outburst, using the {\em Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory}, as well as three quasi-simultaneous epochs of Gemini/GMOS optical spectroscopy. We find evidence for the existence of a correlation between the X-ray irradiation heating the accretion disc and the evolution of the He {\sc ii} 4686 \AA emission line profiles detected in the optical spectra. Our results demonstrate a connection between the line emitting regions and physical properties of the X-ray irradiation heating the discs during outburst cycles of LMXBs. Further, we are able to show that changes in the physical properties of the irradiation heating the disc in outburst can be imprinted within the H/He emission line profiles themselves in these systems.Comment: 23 pages (including 3 appendices), 10 figures, supplementary figures included in the appendices, accepted for publication in MNRA
