Aspectos médicos, legales y culturales tras el trabajo industrial de obreros y obreras en un contexto de modernización: Chile (1900-1930)

This article analyzes the nature and conditions of early industrial work in Chile, and its physical and medical effects on the bodies of workers, within a society which, in the first three decades of the 20th century, accelerated towards urbanization and economic modernization. It proposes that the risk, disease, and vulnerability were the undesirable partners of the new social relationships of production. The criticisms of the working class and the fight for social justice, characteristic of this period, fought these events and were driving factors of the expansion of labor law and the creation of a public health system with a strong social bias.Este artículo analiza la naturaleza y condiciones del trabajo industrial temprano en Chile y sus efectos físicos y médicos en los cuerpos de obreros y obreras, en el seno de una sociedad que -en las tres primeras décadas del siglo XX- transitaba rápidamente a la urbanización y modernización económica. Sostiene que el riesgo, el morbo y la vulnerabilidad fueron los socios indeseables de las nuevas relaciones sociales de producción. La crítica obrera y la lucha por la justicia social características del período, combatieron estos desenvolvimientos y fueron un factor importante tras los fenómenos de expansión del derecho laboral y el establecimiento de un sistema de salud pública con fuerte acento social

Trabajo femenino fabril en un contexto de modernización: Una visión de su evolución por provincias. Chile, 1910-1930

This article analyses the nature and evolution of female and child labor in the wealth producing company throughout the perioded 1911-1928, in nine provinces in which were concentrated the major employment of this bind. It shows that the contribution of woman and child labor contributed signi? cantly to the diversi? cation and expansion of the industrial activity in the country �despite the fact its that evolution was characterized by marked ? uctuations that ultimately led to the relative decline of these participants in the industrial labor market. This phenomenon was in? uenced, on the one hand, by the impact of the Great War and the inestability that followed in the national economy and, on the other, by the social procupation and the growing restrictions imposed on the activit. By the 1930´s the female work force had decreased considerably and children were practically absent from factories.Este artículo analiza la naturaleza y evolución del trabajo femenino e infantil en la moderna empresa productora de bienes a lo largo del período 1911-1928, en nueve provincias, las que concentraban la mayor cuota de empleo de este tipo. Sostiene que la contribución laboral de mujeres y niños aportó significativamente a la diversificación y expansión de la actividad industrial en el país, aunque su evolución estuvo caracterizada por marcadas fluctuaciones que últimamente llevaron a la disminución de estos actores en el mercado de trabajo fabril. Este fenómeno estuvo influido, de un lado, por el impacto de la Gran Guerra y la inestabilidad que le siguió en la economía nacional y, de otro, por las preocupaciones sociales y las crecientes regulaciones laborales impuestas a la actividad.
