    Directional optical switching and transistor functionality using optical parametric oscillation in a spinor polariton fluid

    Over the past decade, spontaneously emerging patterns in the density of polaritons in semiconductor microcavities were found to be a promising candidate for all-optical switching. But recent approaches were mostly restricted to scalar fields, did not benefit from the polariton's unique spin-dependent properties, and utilized switching based on hexagon far-field patterns with 60{\deg} beam switching (i.e. in the far field the beam propagation direction is switched by 60{\deg}). Since hexagon far-field patterns are challenging, we present here an approach for a linearly polarized spinor field, that allows for a transistor-like (e.g., crucial for cascadability) orthogonal beam switching, i.e. in the far field the beam is switched by 90{\deg}. We show that switching specifications such as amplification and speed can be adjusted using only optical means

    Metallicity gradients in local field star-forming galaxies: Insights on inflows, outflows, and the coevolution of gas, stars and metals

    We present metallicity gradients in 49 local field star-forming galaxies. We derive gas-phase oxygen abundances using two widely adopted metallicity calibrations based on the [OIII]/Hbeta, [NII]/Halpha and [NII]/[OII] line ratios. The two derived metallicity gradients are usually in good agreement within +/-0.14 dex/R25 (R25 is the B-band iso-photoal radius), but the metallicity gradients can differ significantly when the ionisation parameters change systematically with radius. We investigate the metallicity gradients as a function of stellar mass (8<log(M*/Msun)<11) and absolute B-band luminosity (-16 > MB > -22). When the metallicity gradients are expressed in dex/kpc, we show that galaxies with lower mass and luminosity, on average, have steeper metallicity gradients. When the metallicity gradients are expressed in dex/R25, we find no correlation between the metallicity gradients, and stellar mass and luminosity. We provide a local benchmark metallicity gradient of field star-forming galaxies useful for comparison with studies at high redshifts. We investigate the origin of the local benchmark gradient using simple chemical evolution models and observed gas and stellar surface density profiles in nearby field spiral galaxies. Our models suggest that the local benchmark gradient is a direct result of the coevolution of gas and stellar disk under virtually closed-box chemical evolution when the stellar-to-gas mass ratio becomes high (>>0.3). These models imply low current mass accretion rates (<0.3xSFR), and low mass outflow rates (<3xSFR) in local field star-forming galaxies.Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures, accepted to MNRA

    Systematic review of the relation between smokeless tobacco and cancer of the pancreas in Europe and North America

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent reviews claiming smokeless tobacco increases pancreatic cancer risk appear not to have considered all available epidemiological evidence; nor were meta-analyses included. We present a systematic review of studies from North America and Europe, since data are lacking from other continents. Risk is also difficult to quantify elsewhere due to the various products, compositions and usage practices involved.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Epidemiological studies were identified that related pancreatic cancer to use of snuff, chewing tobacco or unspecified smokeless tobacco. Study details and effect estimates (relative risks or odds ratios) were extracted, and combined by meta-analyses.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Nine North American and two Scandinavian studies were identified. Reporting was limited in four studies, so only seven were included in meta-analyses, some providing results for never smokers, some for the overall population of smokers and non-smokers, and some for both.</p> <p>Giving preference to study-specific estimates for the overall population, if available, and for never smokers otherwise, the random-effects estimate for ever smokeless tobacco use was 1.03 (95% confidence interval 0.71ā€“1.49) based on heterogeneous estimates from seven studies. The estimate varied little by continent, study type, or type of smokeless tobacco.</p> <p>Giving preference to estimates for never smokers, if available, and overall population estimates otherwise, the estimate was 1.14 (0.67ā€“1.93), again based on heterogeneous estimates. Estimates varied (p = 0.014) between cohort studies (1.75, 1.20ā€“2.54) and case-control studies (0.84, 0.36ā€“1.97). The value for cohort studies derived mainly from one study, which reported an increase for never smokers (2.0, 1.2ā€“3.3), but not overall (0.9, 0.7ā€“1.2). This study also contributed to increases seen for snuff use and for European studies, significant only in fixed-effect analyses.</p> <p>The studies have various weaknesses, including few exposed cases, reliance in cohort studies on exposure recorded at baseline, poor control groups in some case-control studies, and lack of a dose-response. Publication bias, with some negative studies not being presented, is also possible.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>At most, the data suggest a possible effect of smokeless tobacco on pancreatic cancer risk. More evidence is needed. If any risk exists, it is highly likely to be less than that from smoking.</p

    Physical properties of seven binary and higher-order multiple OB systems

    Analyses of multi-epoch, high-resolution (~ 50000) optical spectra of seven early-type systems provided various important new insights with respect to their multiplicity. First determinations of orbital periods were made for HD 92206C (2.022 d), HD 112244 (27.665 d), HD 164438 (10.25 d), HD 123056A (~ 1314 d) and HD 123056B (< 2 d); the orbital period of HD 318015 could be improved (23.445975 d). Concerning multiplicity, a third component was discovered for HD 92206C by means of He I line profiles. For HD 93146A, which was hitherto assumed to be SB1, lines of a secondary component could be discerned. HD 123056 turns out to be a multiple system consisting of a high-mass component A (~ O8.5) displaying a broad He II 5411 A feature with variable radial velocity, and of an inner pair B (~ B0) with double He I lines. The binary HD 164816 was revisited and some of its system parameters were improved. In particular, we determined its systemic velocity to be -7 km/s, which coincides with the radial velocity of the cluster NGC 6530. This fact, together with its distance, suggests the cluster membership of HD 164816. The OB system HD 318015 (V1082 Sco) belongs to the rare class of eclipsing binaries with a supergiant primary (B0.5/0.7). Our combined orbital and light-curve analysis suggests that the secondary resembles an O9.5III star. Our results for a limited sample corroborate the findings that many O stars are actually massive multiple systems.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Overestimation of Vitamin a Supplementation Coverage from District Tally Sheets Demonstrates Importance of Population-Based Surveys for Program Improvement: Lessons from Tanzania.

    Tanzania has conducted a national twice-yearly Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) campaign since 2001. Administrative coverage rates based on tally sheets consistently report >90% coverage; however the accuracy of these rates are uncertain due to potential errors in tally sheets and their aggregation, incomplete or inaccurate reporting from distribution sites, and underestimating the target population. The post event coverage survey in Mainland Tanzania sought to validate tally-sheet based national coverage estimates of VAS and deworming for the June 2010 mass distribution round, and to characterize children missed by the national campaign. WHO/EPI randomized cross-sectional cluster sampling methodology was adapted for this study, using 30 clusters by 40 individuals (nā€Š=ā€Š1200), in addition to key informant interviews. Households with children 6-59 months of age were included in the study (12-59 months for deworming analysis). Chi-squared tests and logistic regression analysis were used to test differences between children reached and not reached by VAS. Data was collected within six weeks of the June 2010 round. A total of 1203 children, 58 health workers, 30 village leaders and 45 community health workers were sampled. Preschool VAS coverage was 65% (95% CI: 62.7-68.1), approximately 30% lower than tally-sheet coverage estimates. Factors associated with not receiving VAS were urban residence [ORā€Š=ā€Š3.31; pā€Š=ā€Š0.01], caretakers who did not hear about the campaign [ORā€Š=ā€Š48.7; p<0.001], and Muslim households [OR<3.25; p<0.01]. There were no significant differences in VAS coverage by child sex or age, or maternal age or education. Coverage estimation for vitamin A supplementation programs is one of most powerful indicators of program success. National VAS coverage based on a tally-sheet system overestimated VAS coverage by āˆ¼30%. There is a need for representative population-based coverage surveys to complement and validate tally-sheet estimates

    Albumin up-regulates the type II transforming growth factor-beta receptor in cultured proximal tubular cells.BackgroundClinical and experimental observations suggest that proteinuria is not merely a marker of chronic nephropathies, but may also be involved in the progression to end-stage renal failure. Filtered proteins are taken up by tubular cells, and overwhelming this system may lead to tubular synthesis of various proinflammatory and profibrogenic cytokines, including transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-Ī²). TGF-Ī² acts by first binding to specific receptors. We studied in an in vitro system using a well-defined mouse proximal tubular cell line (MCT cells) whether fatty acid-free bovine albumin modulates expression of specific receptors for TGF-Ī².MethodsMCT (and LLC-PK1) cells were challenged in serum-free medium with different concentrations of albumin. Activation of a local renin-angiotensin system was tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for renin and angiotensinogen transcripts and determination of secreted angiotensin II (Ang II) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Some cells were also treated with the AT1 receptor antagonist losartan. TGF-Ī² receptor types I and II mRNA levels were determined by Northern analysis whereas protein abundance was measured by Western blots. To test for a functional consequence of up-regulated TGF-Ī² receptors, MCT cells were preincubated with albumin and subsequently treated with low-dose TGF-Ī² that normally does not induce collagen type IV expression by itself. Downstream signaling events were detected by Western blots for phosphorylated Smad2. Scatchard assays with [125I]TGF-Ī²1 were performed to estimate affinity and number of specific binding sites. Different length TGF-Ī² type II promoter constructs linked to CAT reporter were transiently transected into MCT cells to determine transcriptional activity.ResultsIncubation of MCT cells with 0.5 to 10 mg/mL albumin leads to an increase in type II TGF-Ī² receptor mRNA and protein expression without influencing type I receptors. An increase in type II TGF-Ī² receptor protein expression was detected after 12 hours of albumin incubation and was still detectable after 48 hours. The albumin-mediated increase in type II TGF-Ī² receptor mRNA was attenuated in the presence of 1 Ī¼mol/L losartan, suggesting involvement of a local renin-angiotensin system. MCT cells treated with albumin significantly increased expression of angiotensinogen and renin transcripts and also secreted more Ang II into the culture supernatant. Analysis of transcriptional activity showed that promoter segments containing activating protein (AP-1)-binding sites are necessary for albumin-induced transcription of the TGF-Ī² type II receptor. Binding assays revealed that albumin treatment significantly increased the overall binding sites as well as the affinity for TGF-Ī². This effect had functional consequences because MCT cells pretreated with albumin reacted with a stronger TGF-Ī²ā€“mediated phosphorylation of down-stream Smad2 and also increased collagen IV expression compared with control cells.ConclusionOur findings indicate that albumin up-regulates ligand-binding TGF-Ī² receptors on cultured proximal tubular cells. Albumin-induced activation of local Ang II production appears to be responsible for this effect. This may amplify the matrix-stimulatory actions of TGF-Ī² on tubular cells and could be a novel mechanism for how proteinuria exhibits pathophysiologic effects on tubular cells ultimately leading to tubulointerstitial fibrosis

    An Analysis of Model-Based Reinforcement Learning From Abstracted Observations

    Many methods for Model-based Reinforcement learning (MBRL) in Markov decision processes (MDPs) provide guarantees for both the accuracy of the model they can deliver and the learning efficiency. At the same time, state abstraction techniques allow for a reduction of the size of an MDP while maintaining a bounded loss with respect to the original problem. Therefore, it may come as a surprise that no such guarantees are available when combining both techniques, i.e., where MBRL merely observes abstract states. Our theoretical analysis shows that abstraction can introduce a dependence between samples collected online (e.g., in the real world). That means that, without taking this dependence into account, results for MBRL do not directly extend to this setting. Our result shows that we can use concentration inequalities for martingales to overcome this problem. This result makes it possible to extend the guarantees of existing MBRL algorithms to the setting with abstraction. We illustrate this by combining R-MAX, a prototypical MBRL algorithm, with abstraction, thus producing the first performance guarantees for model-based 'RL from Abstracted Observations': model-based reinforcement learning with an abstract model.Comment: 36 pages, 2 figures, published in Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR) 202

    The Americanization of Karen Refugee Youth: Exploring Attitudes Toward and Use of Methamphetamine

    Drug use among refugee populations is a concerning trend in many urban American cities. For instance, Omaha, Nebraska is home to an estimated 7,000 refugees from Myanmar, with at least 75% of those being Karen refugees. The purpose of this paper is to explore methamphetamine use among Karen adolescents in Omaha and to examine whether Karen youth bring their drug use habits with them from refugee camps or if they learn about drugs from their American peers. Two focus groups of Karen youth and two focus groups of Karen parents were conducted to examine methamphetamine use among this population. Findings suggest, like most youth, the Karen children were reluctant to disclose their own use of drugs, but they did see the use of methamphetamine and other drugs in their schools. It appears drug use among the Karen youth is acquired during the ā€œAmericanizationā€ of these children in Omaha schools
