Vacuum fluctuations of a scalar field near a reflecting boundary and their effects on the motion of a test particle
The contribution from quantum vacuum fluctuations of a real massless scalar
field to the motion of a test particle that interacts with the field in the
presence of a perfectly reflecting flat boundary is here investigated. There is
no quantum induced dispersions on the motion of the particle when it is alone
in the empty space. However, when a reflecting wall is introduced, dispersions
occur with magnitude dependent on how fast the system evolves between the two
scenarios. A possible way of implementing this process would be by means of an
idealized sudden switching, for which the transition occurs instantaneously.
Although the sudden process is a simple and mathematically convenient
idealization it brings some divergences to the results, particularly at a time
corresponding to a round trip of a light signal between the particle and the
wall. It is shown that the use of smooth switching functions, besides
regularizing such divergences, enables us to better understand the behavior of
the quantum dispersions induced on the motion of the particle. Furthermore, the
action of modifying the vacuum state of the system leads to a change in the
particle energy that depends on how fast the transition between these states is
implemented. Possible implications of these results to the similar case of an
electric charge near a perfectly conducting wall are discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

Neutrino Decay and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in a 3-3-1 Model
In this work we show that the implementation of spontaneous breaking of the
lepton number in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos gives rise to fast
neutrino decay with majoron emission and generates a bunch of new contributions
to the neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: Version accepted for publication in the Phys. Rev.
[Effect of nitrogen topdressing levels on biometric variables and on production of corn hybrids]. Abstract: Aiming to evaluate the nitrogen topdressing on biometric variables and production of different corn hybrids, an experiment was conducted under field conditions in Jaboticabal, SP. Before carrying out the experiment, soil sampling in the layer 0-20 cm was performed for soil fertility verification, also it was performed the sowing fertilization, which consisted of the 300 kg ha-1 formulated 4-20-20. The treatments consisted of two simple hybrid genotypes, AS1522 and AS1596, subjected to four nitrogen level: zero, half the standard, standard and twice the standard. The experimental was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The sowing was done manually, and when the plants reached stage of physiological maturity, parameters such as height, stem geometry, grain yield, number of grains per spike and number of grain rows per ear were evaluated. The data were analyzed through the F test, and when significant, it was carried out an average comparison. There is difference between the hybrids on the basis of nitrogen topdressing for grain yield and agronomic efficiency. The material AS1596 showed superiority in grain yield and agronomic efficiency in relation to genotype AS1522
Compositional data analysis as a potential tool to study the (paleo)ecology of calcareous nannoplankton from the central portuguese submarine canyons (W off Portugal)
Submarine canyons are deep and steep incisions on the continental margins. The physical forcing
mechanisms linked with these marine systems, such as the enhancement of upwelling and bottom
sediment resuspension, are expected to provide a nutrient source that will increase phytoplankton
density (Hickey, 1995, Kampf,2006).
Coccolithophores are the predominant phytoplanktonic group within the calcareous
nannoplankton and their sensitivity to a variety of surface water environmental parameters makes
them important markers of oceanographic processes and proxies of sea surface water masses and
temperatures, productivity and past climate changes (e.g. Ziveri et al., 2004; Silva et al., 2008).
In the present work we propose to test compositional analysis (Buccianti & Esposito, 2004;
Pawlowsky-Glahn & Egozcue, 2006) as a tool to: a) achieve a clearer distinction between
opportunistic coastal-neritic species (r-strategists) and typical oceanic species (k-strategists) in the
central Portuguese margin, and b) to identify a coccolith assemblage that might reflect favorable
environmental conditions found in the vicinity of the canyon that promotes the productivity of
calcareous nannoplankton. Our main difficulty will be in distinguishing the ecological signal from
the effects of other environmental factors mentioned before (i.e. advection, dissolution, bottom
resuspension). One way to infer the species’ ecological inter-relationships is by determining species
relative percentages. The main concern is how the closure problem and the inconsistency of
percentage determinations will affect our results. Compositional analysis was designed to provide
more reliable and thus representative results, since the inference made on the coccolith assemblage
features from which the data are drawn is correctly performed from a theoretical point of view
(Buccianti & Esposito, 2004). Here, we present the first insights from applying compositional data
analysis to coccolith assemblages from 85 surface sediment samples collected from the central
Portuguese margin
Truncated beta nonlinear regression models for soil-water characteristic curves estimation.
We propose an alternative approach for estimating soil-water characteristic curves based on truncated beta nonlinear regression models. Thus, assuming that the response variable follows a truncated beta distribution. Maximum likelihood estimator of the curve parameters are obtained by direct maximization of the likelihood function and diagnostic analysis tools are considered to check for model adequacy under the two considered models. A soil prole from the Buriti Vermelho River Basin database is analyzed using the proposed methodology
