UV-shielding ceramic nanoparticles synthesised by mechanochemcial processing
ZnO, TiO2 and CeO2 are known as UV-shielding ceramic materials that have advantages over organic UV absorbers for their photo-stability and non-hazardous nature to human bodies. However, they normally cause low transparency in the visible-light range due to light scattering by large particles, which is undesirable for many transparent UV-blocking applications in cosmetic and plastic industries. Light-scattering efficiency of particles can be drastically reduced by decreasing the particle sizes down below 100 nm. This paper reviews recent investigation on the synthesis of ZnO and CeO2 nanoparticles by mechanochemical processing. The resulting particles had a significantly low degree of agglomeration, having mean particle sizes of ~ 25 nm and ~ 10 nm, respectively. The aqueous suspensions of the nanoparticles showed strong absorption in the UV-light range and high transmittance in the visible-light range. Mechanochemical processing offers the possibility of industrial-scale production of transparent UV-shielding ceramic particles for many applications.<br /

Can one written word mean many things? Prereaders’ assumptions about the stability of written words’ meanings
Results of three experiments confirmed previous findings that in a moving word task, prereaders 3 to 5 years of age judge as if the meaning of a written word changes when it moves from a matching to a nonmatching toy (e.g., when the word “dog” moves from a dog to a boat). We explore under what circumstances children make such errors, we identify new conditions under which children were more likely correctly to treat written words’ meanings as stable: when the word was placed alongside a nonmatching toy without having been alongside a matching toy previously, when two words were moved from a matching toy to a nonmatching toy, and when children were asked to change what the print said. Under these conditions, children more frequently assumed that physical forms had stable meanings as they do with other forms of external representation
Uniform random generation of large acyclic digraphs
Directed acyclic graphs are the basic representation of the structure
underlying Bayesian networks, which represent multivariate probability
distributions. In many practical applications, such as the reverse engineering
of gene regulatory networks, not only the estimation of model parameters but
the reconstruction of the structure itself is of great interest. As well as for
the assessment of different structure learning algorithms in simulation
studies, a uniform sample from the space of directed acyclic graphs is required
to evaluate the prevalence of certain structural features. Here we analyse how
to sample acyclic digraphs uniformly at random through recursive enumeration,
an approach previously thought too computationally involved. Based on
complexity considerations, we discuss in particular how the enumeration
directly provides an exact method, which avoids the convergence issues of the
alternative Markov chain methods and is actually computationally much faster.
The limiting behaviour of the distribution of acyclic digraphs then allows us
to sample arbitrarily large graphs. Building on the ideas of recursive
enumeration based sampling we also introduce a novel hybrid Markov chain with
much faster convergence than current alternatives while still being easy to
adapt to various restrictions. Finally we discuss how to include such
restrictions in the combinatorial enumeration and the new hybrid Markov chain

Characteristics and outcomes of culture-negative prosthetic joint infections from the Prosthetic Joint Infection in Australia and New Zealand Observational (PIANO) cohort study
Introduction: Culture-negative (CN) prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) account for approximately 10 % of all PJIs and present significant challenges for clinicians. We aimed to explore the significance of CN PJIs within a large prospective cohort study, comparing their characteristics and outcomes with culture-positive (CP) cases. Methods: The Prosthetic joint Infection in Australia and New Zealand Observational (PIANO) study is a prospective, multicentre observational cohort study that was conducted at 27 hospitals between 2014 and 2017. We compared baseline characteristics and outcomes of all patients with CN PJI from the PIANO cohort with those of CP cases. We report on PJI diagnostic criteria in the CN cohort and apply internationally recognized PJI diagnostic guidelines to determine optimal CN PJI detection methods. Results: Of the 650 patients with 24-month outcome data available, 55 (8.5 %) were CN and 595 were CP. Compared with the CP cohort, CN patients were more likely to be female (32 (58.2 %) vs. 245 (41.2 %); p = 0.016), involve the shoulder joint (5 (9.1 %) vs. 16 (2.7 %); p = 0.026), and have a lower mean C-reactive protein (142 mg L−1 vs. 187 mg L−1; p = 0.016). Overall, outcomes were superior in CN patients, with culture negativity an independent predictor of treatment success at 24 months (adjusted odds ratio, aOR, of 3.78 and 95 %CI of 1.65–8.67). Suboptimal diagnostic sampling was common in both cohorts, with CN PJI case detection enhanced using the Infectious Diseases Society of America PJI diagnostic guidelines. Conclusions: Current PJI diagnostic guidelines vary substantially in their ability to detect CN PJI, with comprehensive diagnostic sampling necessary to achieve diagnostic certainty. Definitive surgical management strategies should be determined by careful assessment of infection type, rather than by culture status alone
Using a simulation model for knowledge elicitation and knowledge management
The work reported in this paper is part of a project simulating maintenance operations in an automotive engine production facility. The decisions made by the people in charge of these operations form a crucial element of this simulation. Eliciting this knowledge is problematic. One approach is to use the simulation model as part of the knowledge elicitation process. This paper reports on the experience so far with using a simulation model to support knowledge management in this way. Issues are discussed regarding the data available, the use of the model, and the elicitation process itself. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
