Crystalline Polymers with Exceptionally Low Thermal Conductivity Studied using Molecular Dynamics
Semi-crystalline polymers have been shown to have greatly increased thermal
conductivity compared to amorphous bulk polymers due to effective heat
conduction along the covalent bonds of the backbone. However, the mechanisms
governing the intrinsic thermal conductivity of polymers remain largely
unexplored as thermal transport has been studied in relatively few polymers.
Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study heat transport in
polynorbornene, a polymer that can be synthesized in semi-crystalline form
using solution processing. We find that even perfectly crystalline
polynorbornene has an exceptionally low thermal conductivity near the amorphous
limit due to extremely strong anharmonic scattering. Our calculations show that
this scattering is sufficiently strong to prevent the formation of propagating
phonons, with heat being instead carried by non-propagating, delocalized
vibrational modes known as diffusons. Our results demonstrate a mechanism for
achieving intrinsically low thermal conductivity even in crystalline polymers
that may be useful for organic thermoelectrics
Extensive Protein Similarity of the Hybridizing Chickadees Parus atricapillus and P. carolinensis
This is the published version. Copyright Central Ornithology Publication OfficeStarch gel electrophoresis of proteins was used to assess genetic differentiation and introgression across a contact zone between Parus atricapillus and P. carolinensis. Little or no differentiation was found at 35 presumed genetic loci, even between distantly allopatric population samples. Nei's (1978) genetic distance (D) was <O.001 for all comparisons. In contrast, Parus gambeli, another chickadee known to hybridize with atricapillus, was well differentiated at 3 loci (D - 0.065). While the data suggest that atricapillus and carolinensis are closely related, they do not allow conclusions on the extent of introgression across the contact zone. The implications of these data are discussed in the light of the emerging pattern of isozyme variation in birds. Received 26 August 1985, accepted 28 March 1986
Geometric phases and anholonomy for a class of chaotic classical systems
Berry's phase may be viewed as arising from the parallel transport of a
quantal state around a loop in parameter space. In this Letter, the classical
limit of this transport is obtained for a particular class of chaotic systems.
It is shown that this ``classical parallel transport'' is anholonomic ---
transport around a closed curve in parameter space does not bring a point in
phase space back to itself --- and is intimately related to the Robbins-Berry
classical two-form.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages, no figures
Melting-freezing cycles in a relatively sheared pair of crystalline monolayers
The nonequilibrium dynamical behaviour that arises when two ordered
two-dimensional monolayers of particles are sheared over each other is studied
in Brownian dynamics simulations. A curious sequence of nonequilibrium states
is observed as the driving rate is increased, the most striking of which is a
sliding state with irregular alternation between disordered and ordered states.
We comment on possible mechanisms underlying these cycles, and experiments that
could observe them.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, minor changes in text and figures, references

Work-related psychological health and psychological type among lead elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom
Building on a series of recent studies concerned with assessing work-related psychological health and psychological type among various groups of church leaders, this study reports new data provided by 134 Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS) together with the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory (FBI) concerned with emotional exhaustion and satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion and higher levels of satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, there was a higher proportion of extraverts among Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches. There was only a weak association between psychological type and burnout
String spectra near some null cosmological singularities
We construct cosmological spacetimes with null Kasner-like singularities as
purely gravitational solutions with no other background fields turned on. These
can be recast as anisotropic plane-wave spacetimes by coordinate
transformations. We analyse string quantization to find the spectrum of string
modes in these backgrounds. The classical string modes can be solved for
exactly in these time-dependent backgrounds, which enables a detailed study of
the near singularity string spectrum, (time-dependent) oscillator masses and
wavefunctions. We find that for low lying string modes(finite oscillation
number), the classical near-singularity string mode functions are non-divergent
for various families of singularities. Furthermore, for any infinitesimal
regularization of the vicinity of the singularity, we find a tower of string
modes of ultra-high oscillation number which propagate essentially freely in
the background. The resulting picture suggests that string interactions are
non-negligible near the singularity.Comment: Latex, 30pgs; v2. minor clarifications, references adde
Executive function in first-episode schizophrenia
BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that schizophrenia is primarily a frontostriatal disorder by examining executive function in first-episode patients. Previous studies have shown either equal decrements in many cognitive domains or specific deficits in memory. Such studies have grouped test results or have used few executive measures, thus, possibly losing information. We, therefore, measured a range of executive ability with tests known to be sensitive to frontal lobe function.
METHODS: Thirty first-episode schizophrenic patients and 30 normal volunteers, matched for age and NART IQ, were tested on computerized test of planning, spatial working memory and attentional set shifting from the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery. Computerized and traditional tests of memory were also administered for comparison. RESULTS: Patients were worse on all tests but the profile was non-uniform. A componential analysis indicated that the patients were characterized by a poor ability to think ahead and organize responses but an intact ability to switch attention and inhibit prepotent responses. Patients also demonstrated poor memory, especially for free recall of a story and associate learning of unrelated word pairs.
CONCLUSIONS: In contradistinction to previous studies, schizophrenic patients do have profound executive impairments at the beginning of the illness. However, these concern planning and strategy use rather than attentional set shifting, which is generally unimpaired. Previous findings in more chronic patients, of severe attentional set shifting impairment, suggest that executive cognitive deficits are progressive during the course of schizophrenia. The finding of severe mnemonic impairment at first episode suggests that cognitive deficits are not restricted to one cognitive domain
