The Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Viscosity Bound with Six-Derivative Corrections
The weak gravity conjecture and the shear viscosity to entropy density bound
place constraints on low energy effective field theories that may help to
distinguish which theories can be UV completed. Recently, there have been
suggestions of a possible correlation between the two constraints. In some
interesting cases, the behavior was precisely such that the conjectures were
mutually exclusive. Motivated by these works, we study the mass to charge and
shear viscosity to entropy density ratios for charged AdS5 black branes, which
are holographically dual to four-dimensional CFTs at finite temperature. We
study a family of four-derivative and six-derivative perturbative corrections
to these backgrounds. We identify the region in parameter space where the two
constraints are satisfied and in particular find that the inclusion of the
next-to-leading perturbative correction introduces wider possibilities for the

Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil.Background: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is the leading cause of genital ulcer disease in
developing countries, including Brazil, and is especially prevalent among men who have sex with
men (MSM). HSV-2 infection represents a risk factor for the acquisition and transmission of other
sexually transmitted diseases. The goal of the present cross-sectional study was to estimate HSV-
2 seroprevalence and to determine the factors associated with HSV-2 seropositivity in HIVnegative
high-risk MSM from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Methods: Stored sera were tested to estimate HSV-2 seroprevalence, while socio-demographic
and sexual behavior data were used to measure associations between risk factors and HSV-2
seropositivity. Using the Poisson regression model with robust variance, prevalence ratios (PR)
were used to estimate de degree of association between risk factors and HSV-2 seropositivity in
bivariate and multivariate analyses.
Results: Seroprevalence of HSV-2 was of 45.7% (184 out of 403). Factors independently associated
with HSV-2 seroprevalence in the multivariate model were: older age (≥ 26 years, PR: 1.41 95%
Confidence Interval: 1.11–1.78), non-white race (PR: 1.32 95%CI: 1.06–1.64), positive serology for
syphilis (PR: 1.65 95%CI: 1.33–2.05), positive serology for hepatitis B (PR: 1.25 95%CI: 0.99–1.57),
stable male partner in the past 6 months (PR: 1.42 95%CI: 1.12–1.79), and unprotected anal sex
with a stable female partner (PR: 1.46 95%CI: 1.05–2.04) in the 6 months preceding the crosssectional
assessment.
Conclusion: The present study made evident a high prevalence of HSV-2 infection in a sample of
HIV-negative high-risk MSM from Rio de Janeiro. This finding indicates the need and urgency for
implementing integrated programs for the prevention of HSV-2 and other sexually transmitted
diseases, and, in particular, programs targeting high-risk MSM
The hemodynamic tolerability and feasibility of sustained low efficiency dialysis in the management of critically ill patients with acute kidney injury
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Minimization of hemodynamic instability during renal replacement therapy (RRT) in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) is often challenging. We examined the relative hemodynamic tolerability of sustained low efficiency dialysis (SLED) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in critically ill patients with AKI. We also compared the feasibility of SLED administration with that of CRRT and intermittent hemodialysis (IHD).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This cohort study encompassed four critical care units within a single university-affiliated medical centre. 77 consecutive critically ill patients with AKI who were treated with CRRT (n = 30), SLED (n = 13) or IHD (n = 34) and completed at least two RRT sessions were included in the study. Overall, 223 RRT sessions were analyzed. Hemodynamic instability during a given session was defined as the composite of a > 20% reduction in mean arterial pressure or any escalation in pressor requirements. Treatment feasibility was evaluated based on the fraction of the prescribed therapy time that was delivered. An interrupted session was designated if < 90% of the prescribed time was administered. Generalized estimating equations were used to compare the hemodynamic tolerability of SLED vs CRRT while accounting for within-patient clustering of repeated sessions and key confounders.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Hemodynamic instability occurred during 22 (56.4%) SLED and 43 (50.0%) CRRT sessions (p = 0.51). In a multivariable analysis that accounted for clustering of multiple sessions within the same patient, the odds ratio for hemodynamic instability with SLED was 1.20 (95% CI 0.58-2.47), as compared to CRRT. Session interruption occurred in 16 (16.3), 30 (34.9) and 11 (28.2) of IHD, CRRT and SLED therapies, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In critically ill patients with AKI, the administration of SLED is feasible and provides comparable hemodynamic control to CRRT.</p
Acute kidney disease and renal recovery : consensus report of the Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) 16 Workgroup
Consensus definitions have been reached for both acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) and these definitions are now routinely used in research and clinical practice. The KDIGO guideline defines AKI as an abrupt decrease in kidney function occurring over 7 days or less, whereas CKD is defined by the persistence of kidney disease for a period of > 90 days. AKI and CKD are increasingly recognized as related entities and in some instances probably represent a continuum of the disease process. For patients in whom pathophysiologic processes are ongoing, the term acute kidney disease (AKD) has been proposed to define the course of disease after AKI; however, definitions of AKD and strategies for the management of patients with AKD are not currently available. In this consensus statement, the Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) proposes definitions, staging criteria for AKD, and strategies for the management of affected patients. We also make recommendations for areas of future research, which aim to improve understanding of the underlying processes and improve outcomes for patients with AKD
Nuclear Localization of CXCR4 Determines Prognosis for Colorectal Cancer Patients
Chemokines and their receptors are implicated in formation of colorectal cancer metastases. Especially CXCR4 is an important factor, determining migration, invasiveness, metastasis and proliferation of colorectal cancer cells. Object of this study was to determine expression of CXCR4 in tumor tissue of colorectal cancer patients and associate CXCR4 expression levels to clinicopathological parameters. Levels of CXCR4 expression of a random cohort of patients, who underwent primary curative resection of a colorectal carcinoma, were retrospectively determined by quantitative real-time RT-PCR and semi-quantitative analyses of immunohistochemical stained paraffin sections. Expression levels were associated to clinicopathological parameters. Using RT-PCR we found that a high expression of CXCR4 in the primary tumor was an independent prognostic factor for a poor disease free survival (p = 0.03, HR: 2.0, CI = 1.1–3.7). Immunohistochemical staining showed that nuclear distribution of CXCR4 in the tumor cells was inversely associated with disease free and overall survival (p = 0.04, HR: 2.6, CI = 1.0–6.2), while expression in the cytoplasm was not associated with prognosis. In conclusion, our study showed that a high expression of nuclear localized CXCR4 in tumor cells is an independent predictor for poor survival for colorectal cancer patients
Causes of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes and the Role of Maternal Periodontal Status – A Review of the Literature
Preterm (PT) and Low birth weight (LBW) are considered to be the most relevant biological determinants of newborn infants survival, both in developed and in developing countries. Numerous risk factors for PT and LBW have been defined in the literature. Infections of the genitourinary tract infections along with various biological and genetic factors are considered to be the most common etiological factors for PT/LBW deliveries. However, evidence suggests that sub-clinical infection sites that are also distant from the genitor-urinary tract may be an important cause for PT/LBW deliveries. Maternal periodontal status has also been reported by many authors as a possible risk factor for PT and LBW, though not all of the actual data support such hypothesis. The aim of this paper is to review the evidence from various published literature on the association between the maternal periodontal status and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Although this review found a consistent association between periodontitis and PT/LBW, this finding should be treated with great caution until the sources of heterogeneity can be explained
Characteristic Evolution and Matching
I review the development of numerical evolution codes for general relativity
based upon the characteristic initial value problem. Progress in characteristic
evolution is traced from the early stage of 1D feasibility studies to 2D
axisymmetric codes that accurately simulate the oscillations and gravitational
collapse of relativistic stars and to current 3D codes that provide pieces of a
binary black hole spacetime. Cauchy codes have now been successful at
simulating all aspects of the binary black hole problem inside an artificially
constructed outer boundary. A prime application of characteristic evolution is
to extend such simulations to null infinity where the waveform from the binary
inspiral and merger can be unambiguously computed. This has now been
accomplished by Cauchy-characteristic extraction, where data for the
characteristic evolution is supplied by Cauchy data on an extraction worldtube
inside the artificial outer boundary. The ultimate application of
characteristic evolution is to eliminate the role of this outer boundary by
constructing a global solution via Cauchy-characteristic matching. Progress in

The Ubiquitin-Like Protein PLIC-1 or Ubiquilin 1 Inhibits TLR3-Trif Signaling
Background: The innate immune responses to virus infection are initiated by either Toll-like receptors (TLR3/7/8/9) or cytoplasmic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-recognizing RNA helicases RIG-I and MDA5. To avoid causing injury to the host, these signaling pathways must be switched off in time by negative regulators. Methodology/Principal Findings: Through yeast-two hybrid screening, we found that an ubiquitin-like protein named protein linking integrin-associated protein to cytoskeleton 1(PLIC-1 or Ubiquilin 1) interacted with the Toll/interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domain of TLR4. Interestingly, PLIC-1 had modest effect on TLR4-mediated signaling, but strongly suppressed the transcriptional activation of IFN-β promoter through the TLR3-Trif-dependent pathway. Concomitantly, reduction of endogenous PLIC-1 by short-hairpin interfering RNA (shRNA) enhanced TLR3 activation both in luciferase reporter assays as well as in new castle disease virus (NDV) infected cells. An interaction between PLIC-1 and Trif was confirmed in co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and GST-pull-down assays. Subsequent confocal microscopic analysis revealed that PLIC-1 and Trif colocalized with the autophagosome marker LC3 in punctate subcellular structures. Finally, overexpression of PLIC-1 decreased Trif protein abundance in a Nocodazole-sensitive manner. Conclusions: Our results suggest that PLIC-1 is a novel inhibitor of the TLR3-Trif antiviral pathway by reducing the abundance of Trif. © 2011 Biswas et al
On Consistent Theories of Massive Spin-2 Fields Coupled to Gravity
We consider the issues that arise out of interpreting the ghost-free bimetric
theory as a theory of a spin-2 field coupled to gravity. This requires
identifying a gravitational metric and parameterizing deviations of the
resulting theory from general relativity. To this end, we first consider the
most general bimetric backgrounds for which a massless and a massive spin-2
fluctuation with Fierz-Pauli mass exist. These backgrounds coincide with
solutions in general relativity. Based on this, we obtain nonlinear extensions
of the massive and massless spin-2 fields. The background value of the
nonlinear massive field parameterizes generic deviations of the bimetric theory
from GR. It is also shown that the nonlinear massless field does not have
standard ghost-free matter couplings, and hence cannot represent the
gravitational metric. However, an appropriate gravitational metric can still be
identified in the weak gravity limit. Hence in the presence of other neutral
spin-2 fields, the weak gravity limit is crucial for compatibility with general
relativity. We also write down the action in terms of the nonlinear massive
spin-2 field and obtain its ghost-free couplings to matter. The discussion is
