THE ROLE OF HEALTH INFORMATION ON FRUITS AND VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION

A three-equation partially-recursive econometric model is specified linking consumer awareness, beliefs, attitude, and dietary behaviors. The results show that older, better educated and higher income households are more likely to meet five-a-day servings of fruits and vegetables than those who are poor and less educated.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

MARKET POWER AND ASYMMETRY IN FARM-RETAIL PRICE TRANSMISSION

A finite mixture model is used to examine whether price asymmetries exist in U.S. fresh strawberry markets. Two distinct pricing regimes are identified. Results show that price asymmetries exist only at 34 percent of the cases and market power has played an important role in generating such asymmetric price relationships.Marketing,

THE IMPACT OF SHARE TENANCY ON RESOURCE ALLOCATION: EVIDENCE FROM NEPAL

A fully interactive two group model is used to examine the issue of resource allocation under alternative tenancy systems in Nepal. The results support the Marshallian hypothesis that both mixed and pure share tenants apply variable inputs less intensively in their rented-in plots than in owner operated plots. The use of tobacco is a major cause of preventable mortality. The estimated number of smokers is 1.1 billion. Of these, 700 million men and 100 million women are in developing countries. The objective of this study was to find out attitude towards tobacco consumption among residents of Dhankuta Municipality. The cross sectional study was conducted among the residents of Dhankuta Municipality where 205 households were taken as subjects. Pretested semi structured questionnaire was administered to the study subjects and face to face interview was conducted. The collected data was entered in MS Excel 2000. The quantitative data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences SPSS software package. The study subjects consist of 50.2 of male and 49.8 of female. Regarding respondent's education, study population showed high level of SLC and above 40.5 followed by below SLC 36.1 and very less was illiterate 14.1 . Majority of the respondents think that there should be ban of the advertising of tobacco products 87.3 and smoking in public places 79 . Almost 67 of respondents think that patient's chances of quitting smoking will be increased if health professionals will give advice to patients. Almost 72.6 of the study population feel cut down tobacco use and 80.3 feel guilty about this habit. Almost 65.8 have tried to discontinue tobacco consumption. We conclude that the residents of Dhankuta reflect good attitude towards cessation of tobacco but poor practice to prevent of tobacco consumption. A search for the 55 MHz OH line

The OH molecule, found abundantly in the Milky Way, has four transitions at the ground state rotational level(J = 3/2) at cm wavelengths. These are E1 transitions between the F+ and F- hyperfine levels of the Lambda doublet of the J=3/2 state. There are also forbidden M1 transitions between the hyperfine levels within each of the doublet states occuring at frequencies 53.171 MHz and 55.128 MHz. These are extremely weak and hence difficult to detect. However there is a possibility that the level populations giving rise to these lines are inverted under special conditions, in which case it may be possible to detect them through their maser emission. We describe the observational diagnostics for determining when the hyperfine levels are inverted, and identify a region near W44 where these conditions are satisfied. A high-velocity-resolution search for these hyperfine OH lines using the low frequency feeds on four antennas of the GMRT and the new GMRT Software Backend(GSB) was performed on this target near W44. We place a 3-sigma upper limit of ~17.3 Jy (at 1 km/s velocity resolution) for the 55 MHz line from this region. This corresponds to an upper limit of 3 X 10^8 for the amplification of the Galactic synchrotron emission providing the background.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Tree Shade and Energy Savings: An Empirical Study

    Get PDF
Trees cast shade on homes and buildings, lowering the inside temperatures and thus reducing demand for power to cool these buildings during hot times of the year. Drawing from a large sample of residences in Auburn, Alabama, we develop a statistical model that produces specific estimates of the electricity savings generated by shade-producing trees in a suburban environment. This empirical model links residential energy consumption to hedonic characteristics of the structures, characteristics and behaviors of the occupants, and the extent, density, and timing of shade cast on the structures. Our estimates suggest that if an additional 10 percent of the 125 million home owners in America started using tree shade to reduce electricity consumption an average of 10 kwh/day for 100 days per year, the annual amount of electricity conserved would be approximately 12,500 thousand megawatts. At the 2007 average residential price of electricity (0.1065/kwh),thiswouldsaveeachhouseholdanestimated0.1065/kwh), this would save each household an estimated 106/year and $1.3 billion in the aggregate. Moreover, the electricity saved would represent approximately one-third of the electricity produced annually in the U.S. by wind power.Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
