Anemia Prevalence among Pregnant Women and Birth Weight in Five Areas in China
Objectives: To investigate the current prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in different areas of China and the association with birth weight and educational level. Methods: A total of 6,413 women aged 24-37 in the third trimester of pregnancy from five areas were randomly selected from all gravidas who gave birth in the hospitals from 1999 to 2003. Blood hemoglobin concentration (Hb) was measured by the cyanomethemoglobin method; Hb <110 g/l was considered as anemia. Results: The overall prevalence of anemia was 58.6%, ranging from 48.1 to 70.5% in the five areas. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of anemia between women who have mental jobs and those who have physical jobs (52.3 vs. 61.1%, p <0.01). The prevalence of anemia depended on the level of education: with 52.9, 62.4 and 66.5%, for college, secondary school and primary education, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.005). Results showed that higher birth weight was associated with Hb concentrations ranging from 90 to 140 g/l, whereas lower birth weight occurred below 80 g/l and above 140 g/l Hb. Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia in Chinese pregnant women was high both in rural areas and towns. Area of residence, education level and type of job influenced the prevalence of anemia. Assessment of the Biocompatibility of the PLLA-PLCL Scaffold Obtained by Electrospinning
AbstractElectrospun membranes of poly (L-Lactide) / poly (L-lactide-co-caprolactone) blend were produced and evaluated by physical and mechanical tests to use as a scaffold for cell growth. The membranes were seeded with endothelial cells (HUVEC) and after culturing time it was visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the process parameters were capable of producing PLLA-PLCL membranes presenting fibers with diameters in the nanometer range. The scaffolds supported cell attachment and growth, indicating the feasibility of producing scaffolds by electrospinning technique, which could be used in tissue engineering applications
Recent glitches detected in the Crab pulsar
From 2000 to 2010, monitoring of radio emission from the Crab pulsar at
Xinjiang Observatory detected a total of nine glitches. The occurrence of
glitches appears to be a random process as described by previous researches. A
persistent change in pulse frequency and pulse frequency derivative after each
glitch was found. There is no obvious correlation between glitch sizes and the
time since last glitch. For these glitches and
span two orders of magnitude. The pulsar suffered the
largest frequency jump ever seen on MJD 53067.1. The size of the glitch is
6.8 Hz, 3.5 times that of the glitch occured in
1989 glitch, with a very large permanent changes in frequency and pulse
frequency derivative and followed by a decay with time constant 21 days.
The braking index presents significant changes. We attribute this variation to
a varying particle wind strength which may be caused by glitch activities. We
discuss the properties of detected glitches in Crab pulsar and compare them

A high performance dye-sensitized solar cell with a novel nanocomposite film of PtNP/MWCNT on the counter electrode
An imide-functionalized material, poly(oxyethylene)-segmented polymer, was synthesized from the reaction of poly(oxyethylene) diamine of 2000 g mol(-1) M(w) and 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride and used to disperse hybrid nanomaterials of platinum nanoparticles and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (PtNP/MWCNT). The composite material was spin-coated into film and further prepared as the counter electrode (PtNP/MWCNT-CE) for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The short-circuit current density (J(SC)) and power-conversion efficiency (eta) of the DSSC with PtNP/MWCNT-CE were found to be 18.01 +/- 0.91 mA cm(-2) and 8.00 +/- 0.23%, respectively, while the corresponding values were 14.62 +/- 0.19 mA cm(-2) and 6.92 +/- 0.07% for a DSSC with a bare platinum counter electrode (Pt-CE). The presence and distribution of PtNP/MWCNT on the CE were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The attachment of PtNPs on MWCNTs was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), incident-photo-to-current efficiency (IPCE) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) were correlated to explain the efficacy of this nanocomposite system
Sudden switch of generalized Lieb-Robinson velocity in a transverse field Ising spin chain
The Lieb-Robinson theorem states that the speed at which the correlations
between two distant nodes in a spin network can be built through local
interactions has an upper bound, which is called the Lieb-Robinson velocity.
Our central aim is to demonstrate how to observe the Lieb-Robinson velocity in
an Ising spin chain with a strong transverse field. We adopt and compare four
correlation measures for characterizing different types of correlations, which
include correlation function, mutual information, quantum discord, and
entanglement of formation. We prove that one of correlation functions shows a
special behavior depending on the parity of the spin number. All the
information-theoretical correlation measures demonstrate the existence of the
Lieb-Robinson velocity. In particular, we find that there is a sudden switch of
the Lieb-Robinson speed with the increasing of the number of spin
Correlates of School Children's Handwashing: A Study in Tibetan Primary Schools
Hand hygiene, including handwashing by children, has been reported to contribute to the
prevention of various infectious conditions. This study aims to explore the correlates of handwashing
behavior among 1690 fourth to sixth grade primary school students in 19 Tibetan primary schools
(Golog, Qinghai, China). The theory of reasoned action (TRA) was applied. Data was collected by
questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis showed that students’ attitude (β = 0.22,
95% CI 0.13–0.31) and subjective norms in terms of compliance to teachers’, parents’ and peers’
suggestions to wash hands (β = 0.09, 95% CI 0.01–0.18) were directly associated with students’
handwashing behavior. Students’ knowledge (β = 0.04, 95% CI 0.03–0.07) had an indirect association
with handwashing behavior, mediated by students’ attitudes and subjective norms. Subjective norms
(β = 0.12, 95% CI 0.07–0.17) were also indirectly correlated with handwashing through students’
attitudes. Therefore, our study supported the theory of reasoned action through our findings that
students’ attitude and knowledge, and also attitudes from teachers, parents and peers were correlated
with student handwashing behavior. Students reported higher level of compliance to teachers
than to their parents and classmates. Based on this information, we recommend teacher-involved
participatory hygiene education to promote students’ handwashing behaviors in areas at high risk for
infectious diseases that can be prevented by handwashing
QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model
Within the framework of modified teleparallel gravity, we reconstruct a f(T)
model corresponding to the QCD ghost dark energy scenario. For a spatially flat
FRW universe containing only the pressureless matter, we obtain the time
evolution of the torsion scalar T (or the Hubble parameter). Then, we calculate
the effective torsion equation of state parameter of the QCD ghost f(T)-gravity
model as well as the deceleration parameter of the universe. Furthermore, we
fit the model parameters by using the latest observational data including
SNeIa, CMB and BAO data. We also check the viability of our model using a
cosmographic analysis approach. Moreover, we investigate the validity of the
generalized second law (GSL) of gravitational thermodynamics for our model.
Finally, we point out the growth rate of matter density perturbation. We
conclude that in QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model, the universe begins a matter
dominated phase and approaches a de Sitter regime at late times, as expected.
Also this model is consistent with current data, passes the cosmographic test,
satisfies the GSL and fits the data of the growth factor well as the LCDM

Pulsars as Fantastic Objects and Probes
Pulsars are fantastic objects, which show the extreme states of matters and
plasma physics not understood yet. Pulsars can be used as probes for the
detection of interstellar medium and even the gravitational waves. Here I
review the basic facts of pulsars which should attract students to choose
