    Labour Migration in Indo-Gangetic Plains: Determinants and Impacts on Socio-economic Welfare

    In India, male out-migration from rural to urban areas has increased in recent years, especially in the Indo- Gangetic regions of the country. This indicates that most of the developed regions of India are utilizing labour force of backward areas. The paper has investigated on labour out-migration from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to find its determinants and its impacts on farm economy. The analysis of determinants shown that the number of members in a family and their educational status have a positive impact on migration. As a result of male out-migration, the women left behind in the villages assume a major role in various farm activities resulting in the so-called ‘feminization of agriculture’. It has also empowered the female members of the migrant households in terms of enhancing their decision-making role in various activities.     Experimental and CFD analysis of a gas-lubricated foil thrust bearing for various foil configurations

    Thrust foil bearings operating at hydrodynamic conditions are self-acting (aerodynamic) bearings that support high-speed shafts at mild loading conditions with air as a lubricant and are generally used in low-power gas turbines. This paper presents an experimental study and a detailed computational analysis of dynamic characteristics of the foil thrust bearing (FTB) in terms of load-carrying capabilities as a function of thrust runner speed and gap between the bearing assembly and the runner by considering the effect of bearing parameters such as number of foils, shape of the foils, and assembly of foils on the bearing pad. The parametric study was conducted on a newly conceptualized bearing test rig capable of rotating up to 45,000 rpm speeds that measured the axial loads of the air foil thrust bearings (AFTB). The computational model of the foil thrust bearings for various configurations with top foils is simulated using multiphysics software for foil deflections and pressure distributions on the foil surface. The numerical results were compared with the experimental values, while the air foil thrust bearings with multilayered foils called cascaded foils (patented) had higher load capability in comparison to other conventional bearing models

    Positron lifetime studies of 100-MeV oxygen irradiated Pb-doped Bi-2223 superconductors

    Positron lifetime studies have been carried out for unirradiated and 100-MeV oxygen ion irradiated Pb-doped Bi-2223 superconductors. The analysis of positron lifetime spectra revealed three lifetime components: a short lifetime, τ1 = 153–196 ps; an intermediate lifetime, τ2 = 269–339 ps; and a long lifetime, τ3 = 616–812 ps. A decrease in all the lifetime components, τ1, τ2 and τ3 with an increase of the relative intensities of I2 and I3 has been observed with increasing fluence. The positron lifetime results obtained are contradictory to the expected trend for the irradiated samples. This variation has been attributed to the formation of cationic clusters and their segregation at the grain boundaries; and probably in between the Bi–O planes too, where the positron density distribution is a maximum. This is highly possible since the metal atoms have a fair chance to get displaced from their original positions as a result of swift heavy ion irradiation. The growth of the Bi-2212 phase with irradiation supports the positron lifetime results

    A Honeycomb Proportional Counter for Photon Multiplicity Measurement in the ALICE Experiment

    A honeycomb detector consisting of a matrix of 96 closely packed hexagonal cells, each working as a proportional counter with a wire readout, was fabricated and tested at the CERN PS. The cell depth and the radial dimensions of the cell were small, in the range of 5-10 mm. The appropriate cell design was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Two geometries are described illustrating the effect of field shaping. The charged particle detection efficiency and the preshower characteristics have been studied using pion and electron beams. Average charged particle detection efficiency was found to be 98%, which is almost uniform within the cell volume and also within the array. The preshower data show that the transverse size of the shower is in close agreement with the results of simulations for a range of energies and converter thicknesses.Comment: To be published in NIM

    Details concerning the design, fabrication and performance of STAR Photon Multiplicity Detector (PMD) are presented. The PMD will cover the forward region, within the pseudorapidity range 2.3--3.5, behind the forward time projection chamber.
