The heavy quark potential in QCD with 2 flavors of dynamical quarks
We compute the heavy quark potential on configurations generated by the
HEMCGC collaboration with dynamical staggered fermions at and
with dynamical Wilson fermions at . The computations are done on
lattices, corresponding to physical sizes of about 1.6 and 2.3
fm, respectively. Up to the distances probed no sign of string breaking is

A migrant study of pubertal timing and tempo in British-Bangladeshi girls at varying risk for breast cancer
Introduction: Earlier menarche is related to subsequent breast cancer risk, yet international differences in the age and tempo of other pubertal milestones and their relationships with body mass index (BMI) are not firmly established in populations at differing risk for breast cancer. We compared age and tempo of adrenarche, thelarche, pubarche, and menarche in a migrant study of Bangladeshi girls to the United Kingdom (UK) and assessed whether differences by migration were explained by differences in BMI. Methods: Included were groups of Bangladeshi (n =168, British-Bangladeshi (n =174) and white British (n =54) girls, aged 5 to 16 years. Interviewer-administered questionnaires obtained pubertal staging; height and weight were measured. Salivary dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate concentrations >400 pg/ml defined adrenarche. Median ages of pubertal milestones and hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated from Weibull survival models. Results: In all three groups, adrenarche occurred earliest, followed by thelarche, pubarche, and finally menarche. Neither median age at adrenarche (Bangladeshi = 7.2, British-Bangladeshi = 7.4, white British = 7.1; P-trend = 0.70) nor at menarche (Bangladeshi = 12.5, BritishBangladeshi = 12.1, white British = 12.6; P-trend = 0.70) differed across groups. In contrast, median age at thelarche (Bangladeshi = 10.7, British-Bangladeshi = 9.6, white British = 8.7; P-trend <0.01) occurred earlier among girls living in the UK. Compared with Bangladeshi girls, HRs (95% CI) for earlier thelarche were 1.6 (1.1 to 2.4) for British-Bangladeshi girls and 2.6 (1.5 to 4.4) for white British girls (P-trend <0.01), but were attenuated after adjustment for BMI (British-Bangladeshi = 1.1 (0.7 to 1.8), white British = 1.7(1.0 to 3.1); Ptrend =0.20). Conclusions: Thelarche occurred earlier, but puberty progressed slower with increasing exposure to the UK environment; differences were partially explained by greater BMI. The growth-environment might account for much of the ethnic differences in pubertal development observed across and within countries
Accurate Scale Determinations for the Wilson Gauge Action
Accurate determinations of the physical scale of a lattice action are
required to check scaling and take the continuum limit. We present a high
statistics study of the static potential for the SU(3) Wilson gauge action on
coarse lattices (). Using an improved analysis
procedure we determine the string tension and the Sommer scale (and
related quantities) to 1% accuracy, including all systematic errors. Combining
our results with earlier ones on finer lattices, we present parameterizations
of these quantities that should be accurate to about 1% for . We estimate the \La-parameter of quenched QCD to be \La_\MSb =

Counter-propagating entangled photons from a waveguide with periodic nonlinearity
The conditions required for spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a
waveguide with periodic nonlinearity in the presence of an unguided pump field
are established. Control of the periodic nonlinearity and the physical
properties of the waveguide permits the quasi-phase matching equations that
describe counter-propagating guided signal and idler beams to be satisfied. We
compare the tuning curves and spectral properties of such counter-propagating
beams to those for co-propagating beams under typical experimental conditions.
We find that the counter-propagating beams exhibit narrow bandwidth permitting
the generation of quantum states that possess discrete-frequency entanglement.
Such states may be useful for experiments in quantum optics and technologies
that benefit from frequency entanglement.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Zero temperature string breaking in lattice quantum chromodynamics
The separation of a heavy quark and antiquark pair leads to the formation of
a tube of flux, or "string", which should break in the presence of light
quark-antiquark pairs. This expected zero-temperature phenomenon has proven
elusive in simulations of lattice QCD. We study mixing between the string state
and the two-meson decay channel in QCD with two flavors of dynamical sea
quarks. We confirm that mixing is weak and find that it decreases at level
crossing. While our study does not show direct effects of internal quark loops,
our results, combined with unitarity, give clear confirmation of string

Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole, planar coordinates and dS/CFT
We discuss the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes in the context of
dS/CFT correspondence by using static and planar coordinates. The boundary
stress tensor and the mass of the solutions are computed. Also, we investigate
how the RG flow is changed for different foliations. The Kastor-Traschen
multi-black hole solution is considered as well as AdS counterparts of these
configurations. In particular, we find that in planar coordinates the black

Pion photoproduction on the nucleon in the quark model
We present a detailed quark-model study of pion photoproduction within the
effective Lagrangian approach. Cross sections and single-polarization
observables are investigated for the four charge channels, , , , and .
Leaving the coupling strength to be a free parameter, we obtain a
reasonably consistent description of these four channels from threshold to the
first resonance region. Within this effective Lagrangian approach, strongly
constrainted by the quark model, we consider the issue of double-counting which

A deep dive into the ecology of Gamay (Botany Bay, Australia): current knowledge and future priorities for this highly modified coastal waterway
Context: Gamay is a coastal waterway of immense social, cultural and ecological value. Since European settlement, it has become a hub for industrialisation and human modification. There is growing desire for ecosystem-level management of urban waterways, but such efforts are often challenged by a lack of integrated knowledge.
Aim and methods: We systematically reviewed published literature and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), and consulted scientists to produce a review of Gamay that synthesises published knowledge of Gamay’s aquatic ecosystem to identify knowledge gaps and future research opportunities.
Key results: We found 577 published resources on Gamay, of which over 70% focused on ecology. Intertidal rocky shores were the most studied habitat, focusing on invertebrate communities. Few studies considered multiple habitats or taxa. Studies investigating cumulative human impacts, long-term trends and habitat connectivity are lacking, and the broader ecological role of artificial substrate as habitat in Gamay is poorly understood. TEK of Gamay remains a significant knowledge gap. Habitat restoration has shown promising results and could provide opportunities to improve affected habitats in the future.
Conclusion and implications: This review highlights the extensive amount of knowledge that exists for Gamay, but also identifies key gaps that need to be filled for effective management
Black Hole Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
We have known for more than thirty years that black holes behave as
thermodynamic systems, radiating as black bodies with characteristic
temperatures and entropies. This behavior is not only interesting in its own
right; it could also, through a statistical mechanical description, cast light
on some of the deep problems of quantizing gravity. In these lectures, I review
what we currently know about black hole thermodynamics and statistical
mechanics, suggest a rather speculative "universal" characterization of the
