R^2 Corrections for 5D Black Holes and Rings
We study higher-order corrections to two BPS solutions of 5D supergravity,
namely the supersymmetric black ring and the spinning black hole. Due in part
to our current relatively limited understanding of F-type terms in 5D
supergravity, the nature of these corrections is less clear than that of their
4D cousins. Effects of certain terms found in Calabi-Yau compactification
of M-theory are specifically considered. For the case of the black ring, for
which the microscopic origin of the entropy is generally known, the
corresponding higher order macroscopic correction to the entropy is found to
match a microscopic correction, while for the spinning black hole the
corrections are partially matched to those of a 4D black hole.Comment: 9 page
Membrane in M5-branes Background
In this paper, we investigate the properties of a membrane in the M5-brane
background. Through solving the classical equations of motion of the membrane,
we can understand the classical dynamics of the membrane in this background.Comment: 15 pages, typos correcte
Imaging of Low Compressibility Strips in the Quantum Hall Liquid
Using Subsurface Charge Accumulation scanning microscopy we image strips of
low compressibility corresponding to several integer Quantum Hall filling
factors. We study in detail the strips at Landau level filling factors
2 and 4. The observed strips appear significantly wider than predicted by
theory. We present a model accounting for the discrepancy by considering a
disorder-induced nonzero density of states in the cyclotron gap.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Rare-earth doped chalcogenide glass fibre laser
We report on the first laser action in a rare-earth doped chalcogenide glass fibre. Laser action at 1080nm was obtained in a 22mm long gallium lanthanum sulphide glass fibre with a neodymium doped core, fabricated by the rod-in-tube technique. The laser was pumped continuous wave with a Ti:sapphire laser at 815nm and showed a self-pulsing behaviour
Hidden symmetries for thermodynamics and emergence of relativity
Erik Verlinde recently proposed an idea about the thermodynamic origin of
gravity. Though this is a beautiful idea which may resolve many long standing
problems in the theories of gravity, it also raises many other problems. In
this article I will comment on some of the problems of Verlinde's proposal with
special emphasis on the thermodynamical origin of the principle of relativity.
It is found that there is a large group of hidden symmetries of thermodynamics
which contains the Poincare group of the spacetime for which space is emergent.
This explains the thermodynamic origin of the principle of relativity.Comment: V1: 4 pages, comments/criticisms welcomed; V2: references added; V3:

-minimal surface and manifold with positive -Bakry-\'{E}mery Ricci curvature
In this paper, we first prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed
embedded -minimal surfaces of fixed topology in a closed three-manifold with
positive Bakry-\'{E}mery Ricci curvature. Then we give a Lichnerowicz type
lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the -Laplacian on compact manifold
with positive -Bakry-\'{E}mery Ricci curvature, and prove that the lower
bound is achieved only if the manifold is isometric to the -shpere, or the
-dimensional hemisphere. Finally, for compact manifold with positive
-Bakry-\'{E}mery Ricci curvature and -mean convex boundary, we prove an
upper bound for the distance function to the boundary, and the upper bound is
achieved if only if the manifold is isometric to an Euclidean ball.Comment: 15 page
Interacting New Agegraphic Dark Energy in a Cyclic Universe
The main goal of this work is investigation of NADE in the cyclic universe
scenario. Since, cyclic universe is explained by a phantom phase (),
it is shown when there is no interaction between matter and dark energy, ADE
and NADE do not produce a phantom phase, then can not describe cyclic universe.
Therefore, we study interacting models of ADE and NADE in the modified
Friedmann equation. We find out that, in the high energy regime, which it is a
necessary part of cyclic universe evolution, only NADE can describe this
phantom phase era for cyclic universe. Considering deceleration parameter tells
us that the universe has a deceleration phase after an acceleration phase, and
NADE is able to produce a cyclic universe. Also it is found valuable to study
generalized second law of thermodynamics. Since the loop quantum correction is
taken account in high energy regime, it may not be suitable to use standard
treatment of thermodynamics, so we turn our attention to the result of
\citep{29}, which the authors have studied thermodynamics in loop quantum
gravity, and we show that which condition can satisfy generalized second law of
thermodynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Two-Body Cabibbo-Suppressed Charmed Meson Decays
Singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays of charmed particles governed by the quark
subprocesses and are analyzed using a
flavor-topology approach, based on a previous analysis of the Cabibbo-favored
decays governed by . Decays to and , where is a
pseudoscalar meson and is a vector meson, are considered. We include
processes in which and are produced.Comment: 18 pages, latex, 2 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.
Open Spin Chains in Super Yang-Mills at Higher Loops: Some Potential Problems with Integrability
The super Yang-Mills duals of open strings attached to maximal giant
gravitons are studied in perturbation theory. It is shown that non-BPS baryonic
excitations of the gauge theory can be studied within the paradigm of open
quantum spin chains even beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. The
open spin chain describing the two loop mixing of non-BPS giant gravitons
charged under an su(2) of the so(6) R symmetry group is explicitly constructed.
It is also shown that although the corresponding open spin chain is integrable
at the one loop order, there is a potential breakdown of integrability at two
and higher loops. The study of integrability is performed using coordinate
Bethe ansatz techniques.Comment: 28 pages. References added in revised versio
