    Multi-scale analysis of the effect of loading conditions on monotonic and fatigue behavior of a glass fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composite

    In this paper, two kinds of PPS/GF composite samples (PPS-0°, PPS-90°) were prepared with two different fiber main orientations related to the injection direction. A wide range of their properties were discussed. Using DMTA analysis, it was shown that the PPS/GF composite under study obeyed the time-temperature equivalence principle. Moreover, Perez model was verified and gave a good estimation of the viscoelastic properties of the PPS/GF. Monotonic and fatigue behaviors and fatigue life of PPS/GF were investigated. Fiber's orientation, applied amplitude and loading frequency effects were emphasized. Self-heating effect on fatigue strength was also analyzed. SEM fracture surface observations allowed analyzing, at the local scale, the main deformation mechanisms occurring during mechanical loading. No evident damage development was observed for both monotonic and fatigue loading. PPS matrix plasticity appeared to be the predominant deformation mechanism until a semi-ductile or semi-brittle final failure depending on the loading conditions and local microstructure

    Calibration and 21-cm power spectrum estimation in the presence of antenna beam variations

    Detecting a signal from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) requires an exquisite understanding of Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds, low-frequency radio instruments, instrumental calibration, and data analysis pipelines. In this work, we build upon existing work that aims to understand the impact of calibration errors on 21-cm power spectrum (PS) measurements. It is well established that calibration errors have the potential to inhibit EoR detections by introducing additional spectral features that mimic the structure of EoR signals. We present a straightforward way to estimate the impact of a wide variety of modelling residuals in EoR PS estimation. We apply this framework to the specific case of broken dipoles in Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) to understand its effect and estimate its impact on PS estimation. Combining an estimate of the percentage of MWA tiles that have at least one broken dipole (15-40 per cent) with an analytic description of beam errors induced by such dipoles, we compute the residuals of the foregrounds after calibration and source subtraction. We find that that incorrect beam modelling introduces bias in the 2D-PS on the order of ∌ 103 mK2 h−3 Mpc3. Although this is three orders of magnitude lower than current lowest limits, it is two orders of magnitude higher than the expected signal. Determining the accuracy of both current beam models and direction-dependent calibration pipelines is therefore crucial in our search for an EoR signal

    One-loop ÎČ\beta functions of a translation-invariant renormalizable noncommutative scalar model

    Recently, a new type of renormalizable ϕ4⋆4\phi^{\star 4}_{4} scalar model on the Moyal space was proved to be perturbatively renormalizable. It is translation-invariant and introduces in the action a a/(Ξ2p2)a/(\theta^2p^2) term. We calculate here the ÎČ\beta and Îł\gamma functions at one-loop level for this model. The coupling constant ÎČλ\beta_\lambda function is proved to have the same behaviour as the one of the ϕ4\phi^4 model on the commutative R4\mathbb{R}^4. The ÎČa\beta_a function of the new parameter aa is also calculated. Some interpretation of these results are done.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Deep Inelastic Scattering and Gauge/String Duality

    We study deep inelastic scattering in gauge theories which have dual string descriptions. As a function of gNgN we find a transition. For small gNgN, the dominant operators in the OPE are the usual ones, of approximate twist two, corresponding to scattering from weakly interacting partons. For large gNgN, double-trace operators dominate, corresponding to scattering from entire hadrons (either the original `valence' hadron or part of a hadron cloud.) At large gNgN we calculate the structure functions. As a function of Bjorken xx there are three regimes: xx of order one, where the scattering produces only supergravity states; xx small, where excited strings are produced; and, xx exponentially small, where the excited strings are comparable in size to the AdS space. The last regime requires in principle a full string calculation in curved spacetime, but the effect of string growth can be simply obtained from the world-sheet renormalization group.Comment: 52 pages, 10 figure

    Gauge Theory and the Excision of Repulson Singularities

    We study brane configurations that give rise to large-N gauge theories with eight supersymmetries and no hypermultiplets. These configurations include a variety of wrapped, fractional, and stretched branes or strings. The corresponding spacetime geometries which we study have a distinct kind of singularity known as a repulson. We find that this singularity is removed by a distinctive mechanism, leaving a smooth geometry with a core having an enhanced gauge symmetry.     The Next Generation of Human-Drone Partnerships: Co-Designing an Emergency Response System

    The use of semi-autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to support emergency response scenarios, such as fire surveillance and search and rescue, offers the potential for huge societal benefits. However, designing an effective solution in this complex domain represents a "wicked design" problem, requiring a careful balance between trade-offs associated with drone autonomy versus human control, mission functionality versus safety, and the diverse needs of different stakeholders. This paper focuses on designing for situational awareness (SA) using a scenario-driven, participatory design process. We developed SA cards describing six common design-problems, known as SA demons, and three new demons of importance to our domain. We then used these SA cards to equip domain experts with SA knowledge so that they could more fully engage in the design process. We designed a potentially reusable solution for achieving SA in multi-stakeholder, multi-UAV, emergency response applications.Comment: 10 Pages, 5 Figures, 2 Tables.     Histologic chorioamnionitis and risk of neurodevelopmental impairment at age 10 years among extremely preterm infants born before 28 weeks of gestation

    Background: Extremely preterm infants whose placenta had histologic evidence of chorioamnionitis have early brain dysfunction, but little is known about neurologic development at 10 years of age. Objective: We investigated the association between histologic chorioamnionitis and neurodevelopmental impairment at 10 years among children born 2 standard deviations below the mean), and epilepsy at the age of 10 years by blinded evaluators using validated measures. Multivariable logistic regression with generalized estimating equations was used. Results: Among 805 placentas, 43% (347/805) had histologic chorioamnionitis by moderate or advanced maternal stage, 36% (286/805) by severe maternal grade, 18% (132/737) by moderate or advanced fetal stage, and 1% (10/737) by severe fetal grade. The frequencies of impairments were 11% (88/767) for cerebral palsy, 7% (56/773) for autism spectrum disorder, 15% (120/788) for cognitive impairment, and 7% (52/763) for epilepsy. After adjustment for maternal age, body mass index, race, insurance status, maternal education, tobacco use, infant sex, and multiple gestations, the adjusted odds ratio for the association between histologic chorioamnionitis and cerebral palsy years was increased with advanced maternal stage (adjusted odds ratio, 2.5; 95% confidence interval, 1.6–3.9), severe maternal grade (adjusted odds ratio, 2.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.2–3.4), moderate fetal stage (adjusted odds ratio, 2.20; 95% confidence interval, 2.1–2.2), and mild or moderate fetal grade (adjusted odds ratio, 1.5; 95% confidence interval, 1.0–2.2). Similarly, the adjusted odds ratio for the association between histologic chorioamnionitis and epilepsy was increased with advanced maternal stage (adjusted odds ratio, 1.5; 95% confidence interval, 1.3–1.6) and severe fetal grade (adjusted odds ratio, 5.9; 95% confidence interval, 1.9–17.8). In addition, the adjusted odds ratio for the association between histologic chorioamnionitis and autism spectrum disorder was increased with mild or moderate fetal grade (adjusted odds ratio, 1.7; 95% confidence interval, 1.0–2.9). Histologic chorioamnionitis was not associated with cognitive impairment. These findings held after adjustment for gestational age at delivery. In contrast to histologic chorioamnionitis, a clinical diagnosis of chorioamnionitis was not associated with neurodevelopmental impairment. Conclusion: Histologic chorioamnionitis may be associated with some forms of neurodevelopmental impairment at 10 years of life among infants born <28 weeks’ gestation
