Convergence of a nonconforming multiscale finite element method

    Get PDF
The multiscale finite element method (MsFEM) [T. Y. Hou, X. H. Wu, and Z. Cai, Math. Comp., 1998, to appear; T. Y. Hou and X. H. Wu, J. Comput. Phys., 134 (1997), pp. 169-189] has been introduced to capture the large scale solutions of elliptic equations with highly oscillatory coefficients. This is accomplished by constructing the multiscale base functions from the local solutions of the elliptic operator. Our previous study reveals that the leading order error in this approach is caused by the "resonant sampling," which leads to large error when the mesh size is close to the small scale of the continuous problem. Similar difficulty also arises in numerical upscaling methods. An oversampling technique has been introduced to alleviate this difficulty [T. Y. Hou and X. H. Wu, J. Comput. Phys., 134 (1997), pp. 169-189]. A consequence of the oversampling method is that the resulting finite element method is no longer conforming. Here we give a detailed analysis of the nonconforming error. Our analysis also reveals a new cell resonance error which is caused by the mismatch between the mesh size and the wavelength of the small scale. We show that the cell resonance error is of lower order. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the cell resonance error is generically small and is difficult to observe in practice

Is the f0(600)f_0(600) meson a dynamically generated resonance? -- a lesson learned from the O(N) model and beyond

O(N) linear σ\sigma model is solvable in the large NN limit and hence provides a useful theoretical laboratory to test various unitarization approximations. We find that the large NcN_c limit and the mσm_\sigma\to \infty limit do not commute. In order to get the correct large NcN_c spectrum one has to firstly take the large NcN_c limit. We argue that the f0(600)f_0(600) meson may not be described as generated dynamically. On the contrary, it is most appropriately described at the same level as the pions, i.e, both appear explicitly in the effective lagrangian. Actually it is very likely the σ\sigma meson responsible for the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a lagrangian with linearly realized chiral symmetry.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figurs; references added; discussions slightly modified; revised version accepted by IJMP

A contrast-sensitive reversible visible image watermarking technique

    Get PDF
A reversible (also called lossless, distortion-free, or invertible) visible watermarking scheme is proposed to satisfy the applications, in which the visible watermark is expected to combat copyright piracy but can be removed to losslessly recover the original image. We transparently reveal the watermark image by overlapping it on a user-specified region of the host image through adaptively adjusting the pixel values beneath the watermark, depending on the human visual system-based scaling factors. In order to achieve reversibility, a reconstruction/ recovery packet, which is utilized to restore the watermarked area, is reversibly inserted into non-visibly-watermarked region. The packet is established according to the difference image between the original image and its approximate version instead of its visibly watermarked version so as to alleviate its overhead. For the generation of the approximation, we develop a simple prediction technique that makes use of the unaltered neighboring pixels as auxiliary information. The recovery packet is uniquely encoded before hiding so that the original watermark pattern can be reconstructed based on the encoded packet. In this way, the image recovery process is carried out without needing the availability of the watermark. In addition, our method adopts data compression for further reduction in the recovery packet size and improvement in embedding capacity. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared to the existing methods

Integrable dispersionless KdV hierarchy with sources

An integrable dispersionless KdV hierarchy with sources (dKdVHWS) is derived. Lax pair equations and bi-Hamiltonian formulation for dKdVHWS are formulated. Hodograph solution for the dispersionless KdV equation with sources (dKdVWS) is obtained via hodograph transformation. Furthermore, the dispersionless Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy with sources (dGDHWS) is presented.Comment: 15 pages, to be published in J. Phys. A: Math. Ge

The Nonlinear Permittivity Including Non-Abelian Self-interaction of Plasmons in Quark-Gluon Plasma

By decomposing the distribution functions and color field to regular and fluctuation parts, the solution of the semi-classical kinetic equations of quark-gluon plasma is analyzed. Through expanding the kinetic equations of the fluctuation parts to third order, the nonlinear permittivity including the self-interaction of gauge field is obtained and a rough numerical estimate is given out for the important \vk =0 modes of the pure gluon plasma.Comment: 7 pages, shortened version accepted by Chin.Phys.Let
